Hi everyone!

After yet another pretty long period of silence I am happy to announce the release of Grog 1.0.1:

https://www.roguelike.games/grog/

Grog is a frugal homage to the original Rogue (created after playing it on a real PDP-11... call that old school ;-) )

You can find all the details via the link above.

Changes in 1.0.1 include:

- BUGFIX: In rare cases excessively long item names could crash both the inventory display and the game.
- BUGFIX: Prevent dropping items on positions that already contain the maximum number of items.
- BUGFIX: In rare cases items were used instead of dropped even if they were not usable.
- BUGFIX: Fixed typos in the credits.
- BUGFIX: Multi-page inventories no longer cause an infinite loop on the death inventory screen.
- BUGFIX: Removed an excessive space character in the name of some identified weapons.
- BUGFIX: Removed an empty highscore line that was provoked by some highscore entries.
- BUGFIX: Removed an unnecessary whitespace in the credits.
- ENHANCEMENT: Show the both release and build number on the title screen in addition to the version.
- ENHANCEMENT: Removed ugly brackets in the highscore header.

Enjoy the game - any feedback is welcome!

P.S.: I'm planning 1.0.2 right now. It will be a kind of technical release because currently Grog doesn't really work if you resize the terminal while you play it (so don't do it ;-) ). I have an idea for a decent fix but need to get that done. Kind of boring maintenance stuff. And then I'll resume working on cute new features.

Happy grogging!

Traditional Roguelikes (Turn Based) / Grog 1.0.0 released!
« on: May 24, 2022, 01:50:19 PM »
Hi everyone!

I am happy to announce the release of a minor side hobby project: Grog 1.0.0.

Grog is a a very classical roguelike game greatly inspired by the original Rogue (but trying to have a neat modern UI). All details can be found at the following link:

https://www.roguelike.games/grog

Some highlights:
  • A dungeon consisting of 25 screen-sized levels.
  • Four monster types on level 1, with plus two new monster types per level. One of the new monsters always will be more powerful as far as combat goes, the other type will sport some challenging special power.
  • Special room types starting at dungeon level 3.
  • Ghosts (former player characters showing up as monsters).
  • Revenge monsters (monsters that managed to kill a player receive a name, special powers or power boosts for consecutive kills and return in later games).
  • Inventory size is strongly limited.
  • Include an item ID game but allow for auto-ID after some time passes.
  • Hunger, prayers, tons of highly variable items.
  • Ultra-flexible character generation (e.g. you enter a textual name, gender and type and your attributes will be fixed depending on these choices).
  • Add a personal note about the fate of your character to your highscore entries.
  • A straight-forward goal: Reach level 25, find the Throne of Immortality and escape the dungeon.

Other Announcements / Kickstarter: ADOM the Roleplaying game!
« on: January 14, 2019, 05:18:50 PM »
Dear roguelikers!

We are very happy to announce that the kickstarter campaign for ADOM the Roleplaying game is now live!

https://tinyurl.com/adom-rpg-kickstarter

ADOM now is branching out into new media in an attempt to make the world even more roguelike! ADOM the Roleplaying game will allow you to adventure with your friends in the Ancient Domains of Mystery. Ancardia was a peaceful world, but a mysterious Gate has opened in a deep and long forgotten cave and now the forces of Chaos spread their corrupting taint, twisting and changing the very essence of beings.

It is for the heroes to decide which side to choose, if any, for Chaos offers tempting powers far beyond mortal capabilities.

12 races and 22 classes allow for a wide variety of unique playstyles where both class and race decisions will continue to matter as the characters grow in power.

ADOM the Roleplaying game is part of the Old School Revival movement and fully compatible with other OSR titles, featuring the "Danger System" - a smart take on advantage/disadvantage mechanics designed to simulate complex situations with very few rolls.
Featuring over 600 full colored pages with gorgeous, handpicked artwork over two books, ADOM the Roleplaying game seeks to set new standards in indie RPG design.

If you want to learn more and see some spectacular samples, check us out at https://www.adom-rpg.com.

Please note that this is the Kickstarter for the pen & paper roleplaying game. The Kickstarter campaign for Ultimate ADOM (https://www.ultimate-adom.com), the sequel to ADOM the computer game, will launch at the end of February.

And if you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Classic Roguelikes / ADOM 2.3.8 released to the general public
« on: November 11, 2017, 05:04:29 PM »
Hi everyone!

Ok, this IMHO warrants a new posting: After a very long time (812 days to be precise) we now are providing a new public release for ADOM.

Everyone now will be able to play ADOM 2.3.8 (release 81) and enjoy the progress of more than two years of work. Hopefully, never again so much time will pass between two releases. The changes are too numerous to recount:
* completely revised user interface & HUD & tons of graphical refinements
* animated monsters
* extensive support for mouse-based play
* tons of new support for new players (like quick hints, better mouse support, simplified key mappings, etc.)
* tons of bug fixes and minor improvements

See the changelog for a full list of changes - it's everything from release 60 upwards in the list!

There have been some changes that people ask about very often:

* ADOM now sports a dialog system and speech bubbles for dialogs. Some of the info dialogs can be deactivated if you don't like them (Show_Info_Boxes = false in the configuration accessible via '='). Speech bubbles and most selection dialogs can't be deactivated though. If you find them less efficient than the old way, please submit appropriate criticism and ideas for enhancement.

* ADOM now offers quick hints that explain how to access certain commands. If you don't need them or find them disturbing you can deactivate those, too (Quick_Hint_Limit = 0 in the configuration accessible via '=').

* The pick and drop commands have been completely rewritten. They now are much more consistent and powerful but you need to get accustomed to them if your muscle memory is trained on the old system. For experienced ADOM players we recommend that you familiarize yourself with all the options and play around a little with it. It's different than before but all options are there (and more).

Generally we believe that these (and other changes) are highly beneficial, especially also for new players. If you are very experienced with ADOM it will take a moment to adjust but our experience is that this goes quickly!

The blog announcement can be found here:

   http://www.ancientdomainsofmystery.com/2017/11/adom-238-is-being-released-to-general.html

For those who don't yet know (do they exist here ;-) ? ): ADOM 2.3.8 is a fully playable roguelike game with extensive RPG elements and huge background world. Including graphics, quests, dozens of races and classes, a skill system, an extensive magic system, a completely revised and modernized user interface with extensive support for new players and naturally tons of bug fixes since the last public release. Press F10 in the game to switch between ASCII and graphical mode.

ADOM 2.3.8 can be downloaded from two locations:

http://www.indiedb.com/games/adom-ancient-domains-of-mystery (for the major variants for the big three platforms plus graphics)

and

http://www.adom.de/home/downloads.html (for the minor variants like ASCII-only)

Files are still uploading and probably will need a couple of more hours but the Windows version already is available at  IndieDB:http://www.indiedb.com/games/adom-ancient-domains-of-mystery/downloads/adom-238-release-81-for-windows

If you find problems or have ideas for improvement please submit them at

Hi everyone!

I am very proud to announce the release of ADOM 2.3.5 as a Steam Beta to the general public:
    http://www.adom.de/steam

The process to access the ADOM 2.3.5 beta is described here: http://www.ancientdomainsofmystery.com/p/adom-beta-steam.html

The general public release hopefully will follow very soon - we just want to get feedback on stability, first impressions, etc. for a couple of days before it will be launched.

Note that ADOM 2.3.5 still is a beta version - there might be bugs, crashes, etc. that we didn't discover in our tests. So be prepared for a little bumpiness - experience has taught us that general public releases are very different from prerelease test releases, which in turn yield a very different experience to our local tests.

ADOM 2.3.5 is the culmination of more than a year of development (one year and one day exactly today - our last release was ADOM 2.2.6 on October, 16th, 2016).

ADOM 2.3.5 contains tons of new stuff. I just want to give you a few highlights:
- A new, much more beautiful and much more functional HUD.
- Tons of graphical tweaks (like mostly animated monsters, speech bubbles, quick hints, dialog boxes, etc.)
- Tons of usability enhancements (quick hints, better context menus, more graphical mouse cursors, finally ESC support, a better quest status screen, many improved dialogs, etc. pp.)
- Tons of new content (117 new items, 22 new monsters, Rolf Quest, Volcano Quest, rechargeable items as a while new item category, ...)
- A new "easy" game mode (that doesn't take away any content or fun but serves as a better game mode for new ADOM players - the game will try to kill you a little less often ;-) )

Read all the details here:
http://www.ancientdomainsofmystery.com/2017/10/adom-235-released-as-steam-beta.html

And now enjoy the latest version and let us know what you think!

If you find bugs or have ideas for more improvements please submit them at http://www.adom.de/bugs

We now are back to working and ADOM 2.3.6 and ADOM 2.4.0 and will be active a lot more often from now on.

Kind regards
