Level 16 - 4000gold is my record now!

I was unlucky enough to find a great two-handed sword AND decent armours.
Ring of dex+1, Ring of Regeneration = no food.

Ohwell! Was trapped between a Troll and a phantom at the end there, was at 3hp and had no useful items except for possibly an un-IDed scroll. It was a scroll of teleportation! And I managed to go downstairs to regen some.. Then I died of starvation :P

I want in! :D Lets do it

Hehe yeah I got greedy by finding too many armours this round.. Kept trying to find something better and got stuck with a -3 armour! (2 AC  or something)

But these guides helped a great deal! Level 16 this run, and this was a pretty unlucky one. And my other two games showed much better potential, but my rogue-game crashed when I tried equipping a ring onto Left hand. (Twice in a row this happened, two separate games in a row :/)

Downloaded the original Rogue now instead of "10Rogue". I want the amulet!! :D

I experience several problems for which I find no solution; 1) Items. It seems impossible to be "safe" with finding new unidentified items.. One will never find enough ID-scrolls for weapons, rings, armour etc. So you just have to gamble right?

Also, the Aquator? And the Rattlesnakes? They will thrash your armour. They will ruin your str.. Nothing can be done about this.

There are NO tutorials/guides/spoiles for rogue to be found on the net either.. I'm guessing that is because, quite frankly this game IS based upon luck.

Don't get me wrong though, I have much respect for this game and its authors, but there are hardships which seems to have NO potential solution except for: Be very lucky.

Am I missing something or is this correct?

Just play, for example the basher-combination one tutorial option suggests and getting far into game is not very hard. I don't understand why people say Crawl is one of the hardest roguelikes.. to me it seems like one of the easiest.

What can make it more difficult than other roguelikes is that you cannot grind. Not items and not XP. I never do this either way though so that just fits me well. ADOM is ten times harder than Crawl!

I found an interesting thread where I wanted to reply right away! I pushed "Register" turned in information, and found out I had to wait to the next day for my account to be -manually- approved of. Sucked bigtime.

Sucks if you only think this from the forum user's perspective. I can understand that cleaning bot messages is not cool if you can avoid that by using manual registering. It's not that bad. If someone gets angry with it I believe we don't lose a great thinker from the forum.

ps. It seems that one bot got through already.

Well there must be something inbetween manual activation and letting -anything- come in..

I don't know what a "great thinker" is, or if a "great thinker" gets annoyed with manual activation, enough to not come back.. Or if it's even possible to draw a connection between intellect and patience.

All I'm saying is that I have been registered to tons of forums around on the web. Some I've been active in, some I just wanted to ask one thing..whatever, I can't remember to have seen "manual activation" on any forum before though, except for small Guild-forums that is connected to some game or something.

I have no idea what the options are though. I do however know that after I spent some time in this forum, other than reading just the thread that I first randomly stumbled upon from a google-search, I'd never consider NOT to register and participate on this great forum. I honestly remember getting baffled when it said I had to wait for a undefined amount of time for my account to get manually accepted to be able to post though, and abit annoyed, I refreshed my mailbox atleast 5-6 times that night before going to bed to see if I was registered yet.

I consider it a fact though that "Automatic registration" is -more- inviting than "Manual, wait-for-however-long-you-have-to-wait activation". Don't get me wrong. The manual activation was completed within a day, and I'm sure noone have to wait more than that. I don't know if automatic registering will dramatically increase worthy activity on here either!

What you are looking for is "Crawl Stone Soup". It generates new dungeons every play, but once a level has been generated, it is persistant.

It is very anti-grinding too. For example, it has shops in the dungeon, but you cannot sell items. So items are worthless unless you really need them.

It also has "branches", every level has 3 up staircases, and 3 downstaircases. If you have fully explored a level and only have 2 down-staircases it means that there is a part of this level you haven't found yet. One way to find it is to go back up, and try all the 3 down-staircases there, or go down and try all the 3 up-staircases from there.

You start at level 1 in the dungeon, there is no town with shops, but I think you will like it :) I do reccomend you play the Stone Soup version of Crawl instead of the original version though, because the controls of Stone Soup is MUCH more convenient and makes the game more fun to play! :)

I just downloaded the good ol' "Rogue: Dungeons of Doom" only had time for one game atm but my first char got some decent equipment but died at level 13 cause I was in a hurry.

Rattlesnakes damaged my STR quite a bit.. Are they worth using the bow against? And is there a potion to replenish the STR again or?

2400 gold (What is gold for anyway?? xD)

Hehe, well I did have Warding and good Magic Resistance. Problem was, the character was getting abit boring.. After clearing the Pit really easy, the Elven Halls was really easy too. I died maybe halfway through the Vault (or what it is) at the bottom there. Would've made it just fine too if I hadn't gotten greedy :)

Yup, died at level 7 of elven halls... Crystal Spear. The annhiliators and their crystal spear wasn't so bad in itself.. Just had bad luck on a berserk-spree where when I was "done" with the mob, two more annhiliators appeared. They were pretty close though and i figured f I can get to one, I will kill them both. However, they both blinked away to each their direction so I was now heavily slowed, standing in a puddle of water, caught two spears bringing me to 40hp..and while I did get time to summon some help, I did not have any entity of healing that was strong enough to let me take another crystal spear.

Ohwell my first Orb ever and my last record (scorewise) was 12000, this one got 130k! Woohoo :)

It was +13 or +14.. Soon after I started using it, various items in my inv and that I was wearing started getting cursed. It was named something like "Cursed Schmitar of.." It's description said "A legendary artifact weapon with a rather... annoying curse on it!"

It's lost along time ago now, have no sligthest clue where I ditched it :P

Now I regret throwing away that +15 Scythe! :/ Ohwell, it almoast killed me though, had to ditch it. I accidentally used up all my remove curses scrolls, and ended up accidentally equipping a cursed sling to my weapon-slot with no means of removing it. (As a Minotaur berserker) Almoast died but got lucky and stumbled upon a Remove Curse scroll!

This is a record character for me by far! =) Level 15 now, got one orb in the snake pits for the first time ever, cleared the hive for food and now clearing Elven Halls just for fun!

Going to take a break and get some rest so I don't do something overly stupid just out of impatience! =)

Well I know lots of you guys are busy, but I mean some of these posts have 1k+ views.

When I googled stuff about roguelikes, I landed on forumposts here alot of the time.

I didn't mean to say that you guys that -are- here, the "hard core" isn't active enough. I just meant to say it seems like there are quite a few, more "casual" roguelike fans, players like me for example that obviously drop by here, but sadly only -read- posts. I do ofcourse understand that this is how it is on all forums.. Just that this forum seems to have suprisingly high view-counts, compared to reply counts.

It'd be fun if more of those who read also would register/reply/make threads. :)

I'm sure the first reply to this post (unless I wrote this first line perhaps ;) ) would be "Ahh, this old topic again.. *SIGH!*" :P I'm sorry if it's been up for debate before, and I'm sure there are reasons for things being as they are..

Anyway, I've noticed that it seems like there's only a handful of people active on the forum. And by "active" I mean they drop by every 2/3 days and reply here and there. Yet, when you make a post and refresh the page 20 minutes later, you can be sure it's gotten 5 more views.

I remember when I found this forum 2 weeks ago, I thought it looked awesome and I found an interesting thread where I wanted to reply right away! I pushed "Register" turned in information, and found out I had to wait to the next day for my account to be -manually- approved of. Sucked bigtime.

I know roguelikes generally are for the patient of the most patient gamers, and that we already are a small niche..but aren't you afraid that having such a "slow" way of joining in to participate on the forum is disencouraging for many and make them go "Ah screw it, I read what I wanted. I wanted to reply something but.. meh *Goes back to sufing/playing favorite RL*" :P

I don't know, perhaps it's been up for debate before, what do you regulars think? :) (I'm a newcomer, don't take my post the wrong way and think I'm critisizing or something, just struck me as odd how slow replies are on here, when it's such a great and wide forum)
