Other Announcements / Portable Roguelikes
« on: July 01, 2007, 04:29:40 PM »
Hello people///

Is any of you playing portable roguelikes recently? do you know any roguelikes/roguelikish games apart from dweller and powder?

I am evaluating the possibility of acquiring a PSP... any changes I could get Java running in such a machine? is it homebrew friendly?

Traditional Roguelikes (Turn Based) / CastlevaniaRL 1.26 RC2
« on: June 27, 2007, 08:50:22 PM »
Hello all!

Allright, we get closer and closer to official 1.26.

This version fixes some important bugs (bad teleport, duplicating items) and also implements some major changes over item distribution (artifacts and special items are much less common now) as well as gameplay (candles are not regenerated now).

Also, menbeast were too weak on last version due to a bug, they are back to full strenght now.

Traditional Roguelikes (Turn Based) / CastlevaniaRL 1.26 RC1
« on: June 10, 2007, 10:23:07 PM »
Hello all

We get closer and closer to the official CvRL 1.26 release. This version, as usual, implements lots of new features and stuff (yes :) )

Some improvements over CvRL1.26pt4:

* Four castle branches added (Inner Quarters, Warehouse, Underwater Reservoir, Catacombs)
* A new flexible room-based dungeon generator
* More plot scenes
* Fight with a former vampire killer
* Added new areas (Castle Abyss, Dining Hall)
* Enhanced areas (Dungeon, Clock Tower, Lab, Starting Forest)
* New "secret" bosses

Contrary to the previous testing releases, this one is open to the public, while still not being the official 1.26 release.

I left the updated manual at work... I will post it on tuesday.

Damn! I am getting closer everytime, but this one was a SAD death :(

Killed by a troll on level 14 while Wearing back my aquated armor... had just recovered my strength from 8 to 17 and augmented it to 18... had just escaped a Troll on level 13

The bastard hit me from 46 to 33, to 21 to 0   >:(

Code: [Select]
Inventory:
4 rations of food
4 potions of healing
2 Scrolls of Scare monsters
1 staff of striking (5 charges)
+1 Ring mail
-2 banded mail
-1 banded mail
Splint mail
+1,+0 short bow
29 arrows
9 bolts

Equipment
+2, +1 Mace
A ring of slow digestion

Was almost killed on startup by lucky bats and vermin, had some early potions of level up... reduced strength a lot by rattlesnakes, as usual... but went forward, never found a nice weapon... and only enchanted my trusty mace one.... to make things worse, got poison-sick and reduced to 12... things got much better on mid game, with lots of potions and rations, the character was promising... even better until the end of the game, but I must say the Troll killing me was a nasty surprise (4 blows? come on!)

How do I know all this? I recorded all muy playing session! You can revive it using the almighty DOSRecorder from >Here<

Hello all...

Today, we feature a competition that goes back to the roots of the genre, back to the very same moment when the adventurer stood in the entrance of the dungeons of doom, seeking fame and fortune for his guild of Rogues. Yes gentlemen (and gentlegirls), I am talking about the game that started it all. Rogue.

Rogue was a game made in 1980, but don't be fooled... this doesn't means it is a simple, easy or uninteresting game. One may be led to think that all these years of enhancements made on further games would opaque the features of Rogue, well, this is not true.

Rogue's pushforward nature and the cruelty of the enemies makes up for a lot of fun and challenge, prepare for a lot of keyboard bashing and screen cursing, as your adventurer's armor melt again to rust monsters' breath, Vampires suck your HP away and wraiths level you down (yes, permanently).

After all, as you know, this is the game that spawned the genre.

The competition is simple:

  • Recover the amulet of Yendor and report your deed to Temple of The Roguelike
  • Post screenshots of your victory
  • Post the history of your brave rogue.
  • The competition will run for 2 weeks from now on.
  • If there happens to be more than 1 victory, the winner will be judged this way
    • Highest Score adds 2 points
    • Coolest Rogue's History adds 5 points
  • Posting failures or almost victories is encouraged
  • If you cheat, the RNG will haunt you for eternity, andall the characters you play in any roguelike will begin with a Doomed intrinsic or equivalent
  • This challenge applies for the "happy face" Rogue version which can be found here: http://www.the-underdogs.info/game.php?name=Rogue, or for Linux the version inside the bsdgames-nonfree package which can be installed via Synaptic, apt-get, etc.
  • Good luck!

Hello people!

Mount Drash RL is a quick paced roguelike game in which both your long term strategy and your tactical skills are needed to win. There are no character classes; you shape your character through the game. It includes combat maneuvers for fighters and powerful spells for magic-types.

Some months ago, Blade won the Magus Challenge, and became the master magus inside the game for the next version; also, Valkeera proved the impossibility of the Avenger challenge via hard-core savescumming.

Another challenge has been issued!

Battle your way to the Chimera and destroy it using a fighter-typed character! You gain one point for each Combat Maneuver and lose one for each "stat" or magic advancement you pick.

Read the manual within the distribution for further info about the game.

Screenshots here: http://www.santiagoz.com/web/page.php?11

You can download DrashRL 0.32 from http://www.santiagoz.com/web/download.php?list.4

The winner gets an in-game surprise for next release!

Hope to see your challengers!

How did you get into roguelike development?

I remember I was surfing the web for a new RPG to satisfy my needs after destroying all Final Fantasy games when I found ADOM... after playing some not very sucessful games I decided it was time to make my own... this matched with the time when I was learning Java, so it was a perfect mix up. After some failures and some rewrites I finally got into what seems to be a good path :)

What about you?

Early Dev / Your favorite newborn roguelikes
« on: May 09, 2007, 11:51:27 PM »
So, have you grown attached to any roguelike apart from the major ones?

I remember doing a lot of exploration on DeadCold back then, a shame it is dead... Tales of Endorech: Magic Monsters is also a nice challenge, albeit the game is still incomplete.

I also liked Icey's War of Wizards, perhaps we could arrange an online tournament... who is interested?
