Well, wait for patch 1.5.3 -- it brings lots of additional eye candy (including character portraits, player tiles that match the player portrait in the status area and animated earthquakes, wohoo!)  and further gameplay enhancements (offensive and defensive mode, more item combination & throwing effects ...)

Okay, nothing so unusual.

From my own experience I can identify only 2 things on your list that can really slow down your computer:

1. Microsoft Windows Search Indexer
2. Microsoft Security Essentials
3. all the ZoneAlarm stuff (incl. TrueVector Service)

1 and 2 make only problems when they either update their search index (1) or their database (2), or if (2) is running a background check of your system.

With ZoneAlarm I always had problems. I stick with the normal Windows 7 Firewall which is better than many people say. Deactivating the search indexer should be an option, if you don't search inside documents regularly.

I would also deactivate the Windows Media Player network sharing service, except you have connected multiple devices to your computer and want to access the music storend on your computer from all of the other devices.

... another idea: These freezes -- are these just Firefox freezes, or does your whole system freeze? If just Firefox freezes, it might be a profile problem. Try deleting your user profile (somewhere, often hidden, in your personal folder) and then try again. If it does not help, try to completly delete Firefox and reinstall it.

If you whole system freezes, it might be a heat problem.

Thanks, but this is not the list of ALL processes (includig the admin processes), is it?

Elig, I second your suggestions, and I agree to the problems you've mentioned. It does not work if one person alone tries to accomplish it -- and with other persons, it's the same as in many other dead projects: for some moments, there's lots of enthusiasm, but shortly the whole team breaks apart, because members don't take the project as seriously as the person who initiated it. And motivating members which you don't really know except from forums or blogs is very hard ;)

The most realistic thing I can imagine to produce is a magazine that is based on one particuliar roguelike, similar to the World of Warcraft official magazine (published 4 times a year), but include an "What else happened in the roguelike world (in the last 4 months)?" section.

That the Harris columns are only semi-regular kinda lend itself poorly to shining lots of spotlights down on various games---hence he tends to shine on ones that are already shining save odd cases like with Legerdemain back when it first came out.

To publish new, in-depth articles on a regular basis is of course very difficult, and thus it seems reasonable for the author to stick with the games he knows best, or is able to learn pretty well (such as Desktop Dungeons). However, I still believe a dedicated roguelike blog / magazine is needed, although my own attempt in 2007 (magazine.roguelike.us , still online) failed after issue 2, and although that nice blog that was started some months ago ... don't remember the URL right now, seems to be dead, too.

There's an interesting interview with the developer of "Desktop Dungeons" (apparently the current big, although small, thing in roguelike-likes...) at GameSetWatch @Play column.

They talk about the role of promotion and communities in game design. The author esp. acknowledges the importances of IndieGames Blog for getting publicy. Interesting read (and nice game).

Besides, there are 2 roguelike news mentioned at the end of the article: the release of DCSS 0.6, and the latest update on Dwarf Fortress -- apparently the only relevant news to mention in the blog.

Well, 29% is good. My physical memory is about 79% (because I have only 1 GB and currently Chrome, Photoshop, Lazarus etc. open). Firefox with 73 MB is okay, too.

Could you post a list of all processes running? Or send me a screenshot of your taskmanager with the sorted list open? It might help to identify if something is running which should not run.

Which processes shown in your task manager is consuming the most memory? (you can sort the list by clicking on one of the column heads, there must be sth. like "memory").

Thanks for the ideas, Jo.

The name thing, however, has been solved -- I'll stick with LambdaRogue, because the players who know and play the game, know it under that name.

I emphasize it's subtitle stronger than before, thus I'll often speak of "LR: The Book of Stars". Additionally, I now use a slogan suggested by somebody in the development blog: Per Libris, ad Astra (To the stars, through Books).

svchost.exe is a program that runs Windows' background services; I've got 10 instances of that process running (and if I hadn't disabled some of the unneccessary background services, it would be much more). So no worry about svchost.

I wouldn't be worried about Chrome; I've got 7 chrome instances right now, with 4 tabs openend.

That you see svchost only if your press "show all Users processes", is totally okay. Ususally, you are just a normal user, without administrator rights, in Windows 7. To see processes that have been started by the system on its own (i.e. not by _you_), you have to press the button.

I wouldn't wait any longer. Save your files and reinstall Windows.

So you've never tried it?

EDIT: Stupid question. "Dwarf Fortress must be a great game"  Of course you haven't.

I have tried it and from what I saw, I assume that it _must_ be a great game, but I can not definitly state such an opinion without having played it for a longer time. And some memory and speed issue with my computer hinder me to do so.

Edit:  Really?  No replies?

Dwarf Fortress must be a great game, and I have lots of respect for its devs. It is, however, way to complex for me to get into it :-/

Thank you. Fixed.

It's very very early in the morning and patch 1.5.2 for LambdaRogue: The Book of Stars has been released.

The new version introduces ways of interaction to the game that have long been missed, namely item combining, and throwing. Additionally, balancing has been worked on again, to fill some, well, "difficulty gaps" in the mid-game.

To combine one item with another, simply drop both items at the same dungeon tile. The dropping order is irrelevant. Currently, there exist about 25 possible combinations, many of them involving usual comestibles. Future updates will bring additional variations. If items can't be combined, you'll receive the message that there is no space on the dungeon tile, as in previous releases.

To throw an item at a creature, press the newly introduced Throw-button, which is [T] by default. Then select an item and enter a direction. You can throw as far as your field of view goes. If your item hits a creature, the item falls to the ground. If your item hits a solid wall, it will be destroyed, so -- throw tactically. The inflicted damage depends on your strength, the type of item, possible long-range bonuses your equipment might have, and a little bit luck.

Existing save games of the 1.5 branch (1.5, 1.5.1 and 1.5.1a) are compatible with the new release. You can continue your current game and make use of the new possibilities. However, some items have slightly modified properties.

This patch is available both for Windows and Linux. Downloads as usual at http://lambdarogue.net .
