[Changes and additions]
The armour equipped by NPCs will now be +enhanced depending on their starting level like their weapon currently is. This will not apply to summoned NPCs and NPCs outside Nefias though.
Equipment increase in price with their +enhance value. Enhanced equipment have the same chance of dropping [from kills] as miracle-quality equipment. The chance for enhanced miracle equipment to drop is even higher. Be sure to leave some space in your inventory so that you can pick these equipment up.
Reduced the multiplier on sales at player shops specialized in equipment from 2 times to 1.5 times.
Greatly reduced the delay between refresh ticks for generating fertilizer on farms and well as the Rubbing and milking cooldowns on the ranch from 120 hours to 24 hours. For existing saves, the new cooldown will take effect after the next fertilizer generation/Rubbing/milking. There is still the minimum 24 hours delay between crop growth [ticks] and generation/breeding of ranch animals. However, the number of chances that crops get to grow over a period of a few days has been doubled, and the chance of ranch animal breeding/produce spawning has been quadrupled.
Amount of money rewarded for clearing Nefias (and their individual floors) was way too much, so it has been significantly reduced.
Added just a few pieces of info that the tutorial facility was lacking.
Added 1 new unique NPC in the tutorial facility who will give you an item if you meet the requirement.
Slightly reduced the fee for attending the Seminar. This is as low as it will go so that players will pay attention to the content.
Changed the portraits of 4 unique NPCs added in 1.65. Middle-age wizards are kind of hard to draw...
Added 2 new red books.
Made categories of instruments produce different "♪" [speech bubbles]. Some of them were kind of hard to illustrate as text, so these might change in the future.
Performing and harvesting quests will now automatically end if you leave the map. (The quests will be cleared if you meet the quotas.) Added an exit for the Party Time! map at the bottom.
Changed appearance rates and added more unique NPCs to the list that will appear in Party Time!. There is now a difference between North and South Tyris in terms of the NPCs that will appear, and people who shouldn't be together will no longer appear at the same location.
Greatly increased the chance of satisfying the audience when Fascination Dance succeeds.
Preaching special action will now please the audience and award points.
When characters with the spell multi-casting bit flag defeat an enemy with dart-type spells, they will no longer immediately search for the next target and shoot the remaining dart spells at it.
Disturbance special action no longer activates when used on a target that does not use gauge attacks. The animation has also been sped up, and the log will describe who used Disturbance on which target.
Made some South Tyris towns have more/less of certain types of quests.
Digging town walls will yield gold bars as well as gold pieces.
Reduce the amount of nutrition that the goose needs to lay platinum pieces. Yacatect's gem stone now gives 10-25pp (depending on Faith skill level).
Increased the limit on number of handmade chocolate that you can make [per year] from 3 to 10. However, they no longer heal, and their effect on Impress has been reduced.
Pets being ridden will now have their HP bar colour change when they are not hungry.
Rod of alchemy and energy crystal of matrix no longer work on items marked as important.
When NPCs attempt to use Shadow Step, Run Wildly, ZinlaiKyaku, or Clash Rush on a target out of sight, it will now become a regular movement instead of attack.
Changed the colour of some wall tiles in the Act III main dungeon.
The log now displays if bomb rocks are idling or in combat, so keep an eye on it. Cluster bomb rock also no longer uses Draw Shadow, and will approach its target with regular movement. As such, they are no longer something that you have to prepare for in advance and are now quite avoidable.
Eye of brainwashing special action now has a visual effect only when the target fails to resist. If the target is the player, the attribute used to resist is now Will instead of Charisma. If the target is an NPC, (Impress + player's Charisma) will be rolled against (50 + attacker's Charisma) to resist.
There is a feature in vanilla Elona where breath attacks do not work on tiles outside a radius centred on the player. This means that all breath attacks outside used to be just a wasted [turn]. This has been changed so that breath attacks will work outside that radius.
The equipment that NPCs spawn with and rare drops that have a 1/100 chance of getting generated or less now have 5-20 times the rate of getting generated. However, there is a trigger that decides if they will get generated, and this has a 1/4 chance of being turned on at the start of each day. Once [a rare piece of artifact equipment or rare drop] spawns, this trigger is turned off. These items will never drop/spawn when the trigger is off.
<Oti-Tubaki>, <Hero's cloak>, plank of Carneades, and <Nightmare> will now get randomly generated. They are unaffected by the aforementioned trigger.
The <Stradivarius> is now available for purchase with music tickets.

Fixed some descriptions.
Fixed the log not describing who used a breath attack for breath attacks used within sight.
Fixed an NPC added in 1.65 not being marked as unique, causing it to get randomly generated and not speak its unique NPC lines. If this NPC is already generated in a save file from a previous version, the game will automatically mark it as unique when you enter the border map.
Fixed the deck image of an NPC added in 1.65 (not the aforementioned).
Fixed sprites for female chickens not getting used.
Fixed exchange items (NB: music tickets/small medals?) in player shops not getting categorized as sellable items.
Fixed vomiting when Alchemical Rain is use and generating a vomit causing the current Alchemical Rain to apply the blessed/cursed status of the vomit [to the remaining hits].

Added an item that is available for a limited time only. If you update the game while it is still 2016 and load a save file, it will be generated at your feet.

The number of gold pieces awarded for clearing random Nefia is now approximately 1/4 of what it was. Floors other than the first one will have roughly the same amount of gold placed on the ground. This change was made because dungeons gave the same reward no matter how many floors there were in there, and players looking to get the gold reward at the end were basically making a beeline for the last floor. This should increase the amount of money Nefias award if they have 5 floors or more.
Tiles in the random floors of the Act III main quest dungeon are now of a certain type. This does not affect floors that already have been generated.
Decreased the spawn rate of Nefias that have a danger level that depends on the lowest floor cleared.
The player can now use Pregnant special action when pregnant. Now you can get that girl/guy you like knocked up. The kid isn't going to be yours though! (Talk about high-level NTR shenanigans.)
NPCs born from pregnancy will have a level of at most 200.
Increased amount of exp gained by students at the Doujou when the player stops by.
Changed the power of Gravity Sphere special action. Its power was previously balanced with end-game Constitution in mind, so this time it should be balanced when Constitution is still low. Floor number also has a lower effect on its power now.
Converge Breath gauge attack will now increase current HP by 1/3. This increases HP, but is not a healing move. It may increase HP beyond the maximum until HP gets recalculated. HP will not be increased if current HP already exceeds maximum HP.
Items made from item fusion will be identified when created.
Increased the base price of items created from wood craft and stone craft item fusion recipes. Carpentry and Jeweler skills modifier on item quality has been adjusted so that they make it easier to craft better items. The material of the resulting item is also no longer fixed and is now random, so items may sell for even more due to the material modifier on their prices. However, the game will auto-save after crafting an item.
Decreased the skill level required for emerald tablet, brilliant rubynus, and brilliant diamond item fusion recipes. Increased the sell price of those items. Number of items consumed when crafting remains the same.

Throwing it will deal no weight-dependent damage.

Violent Garden
Wide special action. Deals Gardening and Learning-dependent poison-element damage to hostile characters in sight.
The strength of the status ailment dealt is fixed.
Targets that are not already afflicted by Bind will have 3 turns of Bind applied to them.
Gives Gardening skill experience to the user.
Replaces Nether Arrow in Insane Kumiromi's repertoire of moves.
Aromageddon
Wide special action. Activation will expend 1 essential oil in the inventory.
Affects all hostile and allied characters in sight including the user.
Gauge of affected allies will be increased by 15% and their MP will be recovered by an amount dependent on the user's Gardening's skill.
A Gardening skill-dependent speed debuff will be applied on hostile targets that are non-unique NPCs and have a Speed attribute that is half of the user's Speed or more.

Changed the chicken NPC's sprite because it's the year of the rooster. Also made a different sprite for female chickens.
Placed a new unique NPC at the South tyris north border.
Added 2 new spirit NPCs and evolution patterns.

Livestock can now be milked by using Squeeze special action on them.
Milk obtained this way will have an +enhance value on them that depends on how much they were brushed and the player's Dexterity. The +enhance value will be even higher if they are good at producing milk. Being inept at producing milk will have no effect on the resulting +enhance value.
Milking has the same cooldown as Rubbing them with a brush.
However, livestocks' Life will be halved every time they are milked.
Attempting to milk livestock with less than 2 Life will kill them.
Livestock will still spawn milk on the ranch even when their Life has been lowered, so you can choose whether you want to milk them all you can then let them live or turn them into pieces of meat afterwards.
Milk sells for the same amount for all monsters, so with some Rubbing you could have a dairy farm even on a ranch with low level monsters.
To make PV less important and accuracy less unimportant, DV now has 1.75 times the effect on evasion compared to previous versions.

It will appear after a diastrophism if you're using a save from a previous version. This is oriented towards totally new players. If beginners find themselves getting stuck in the game even after following the hints given, then I might want to add more tutorial content or change game balance.

the Adventure Seminar
[NPCs on this map] will resurrect naturally with time and map will refresh periodically. The Classroom map accessible from here will refresh whenever you enter it. The courses overlap in content, but another way of looking at it is that there is continuity across the courses.
[New NPCs]
novice
Level 6 norland. Not randomly generated. Uses Dark eye, as well as Heal Light on low health.

Level 55 karune. Drain Blood, Squeeze, Draw Shadow.
<Mito> the seminar lecturer
Level 65 juere. Uses Shadow Step and Gravity Accel.
<Iduru> the seminar lecturer

Level 190 spirit. Floats. Resists chaos. Uses collected power, Homing Lazer, Nether Wave, Shadow Step, Eye of brainwashing, Abyss in the eye, and Megid Flame. On low health, uses MP Breath.
chaos seed
Level 30 spirit. Floats. Resists chaos. Uses Squeeze and Eye of Mana.
[New evolutions]
Chaos spirit evolves into chaos sprout with evolution heart. Male and female sprites differ.
Using a god heart on chaos sprout will then make it evolve into chaos plant and learn Extermination Breath.
[Birthday event]
Up to 16 NPCs out of all the pet and non-pet NPCs on the current map will now be selected (pets will have priority) and they will celebrate your birthday.
They will celebrate it even if they were out of sight, have low impress, or are hostile, but not if they are asleep, unconscious, or have 0 Attract.
Lines spoken by them will be affected by their respective styles of speech.
The number of NPCs there and the options [you pick] will determine whether they will cheer and applaud.
The worst thing that can happen is that there is no one on the current map. In that case, the wish goddess will celebrate your birthday.
A blessed present will be generated at your feet when the event ends.
[Milking livestock]
The +enhance value of milk produced by livestock will be higher if they are good at producing milk. Being inept at producing milk will have no effect on the resulting +enhance value.
Milking has the same cooldown as Rubbing them with a brush. However, livestocks' Life will be halved every time they are milked.

Note for Players: To keep your companions from sacrificing themselves (notably the dog you start with and anything you manage to charm/raise later),  you can press 's' to make them stay in place when you enter a town and not follow you. Otherwise prepare to lose your companions.

EDIT: Nevermind.. this doesn't seem to make them stay put for more than a few turns :/

In the meantime I've resorted to save scumming in towns because PC's willingly sacrifice themselves constantly.. important ones.. elders, trainers, merchants, healers.

So now I save before entering a new town and reload until I get a town where the important NPCs, or at least the elder, are in buildings with NO fireplace.

Also, if an elder dies, you can never finish their quest. It ends up stuck in the quest log. I suggest either the ability to abandon quests, or automatically remove them if the NPC who gave them to you dies (the only time it really matters), otherwise it clutters up and its hard to keep track because they aren't done by town names/npc names.

I would suggest that specifically, because there are ways they can die even if they stop walking into their fireplaces. Like a PC rampage force attacking them, or some so-far unknown event you throw in, etc.

I'm loving this *in general* The system seems real well thought out, the map is detailed but understandable, the skill system is cool.. found a few trainers etc... and its only alpha, huzzah.

But a couple glaring things have made it an exercise in frustration, and imo absolutely need to be taken care of. It *should* be fairly simple but would definitely involve work.

FIREPLACES are a huge problem. I cant even finish a single quest in a town. If the elder has a fireplace, he's guaranteed to die. In fact any NPC with a fireplace is guaranteed to die. They WILL walk into it and burn to death. So will your puppydog.

Tagging hazardous tiles as such and making NPC pathfinding attempt to avoid moving into them willingly, even to the point of just staying still instead of moving, would fix this.  Depending on how in depth you want it, you could code exceptions to the rule. This has  been maddening and I've barely played an hour or two. Otherwise awesome.

Food is the other issue I'm seeing. I've found out how to reuse bottles to get water (at the ocean no less haha) to restore a bit of stamina, and getting new rations at the ship works,.. but corpses seem to be unusable. 'U'sing a corpse, unlike 'U'sing a ration, gives no endurance but just renames it to 'corpse' instead of 'goblin corpse' or 'panther corpse'. But the system at least somewhat seems to understand that corpses are food, because when you salvage a corpse, it gives the message 'you have salvaged x organic material from the RATION'

Now, not playing far but knowing there is crafting, I don't know if you have a way to use those 'organic material' to combine into rations if you have the proper skill.. and that would be awesome! But you should be able to consume corpses in a pinch, for less satiation than properly salvaging/butchering and making real rations. And that of course opens the door to special corpse effects if you ever want to go that route.

In the mean time, workaround for not being able to get food 'on the go' which is REALLY needed for long journeys (quest to go check out this place faaaar faaar away and far from where you can bring the ship.. you need tons of food)... is exploiting the ship.

For now you can get up to 3 free rations by going to the ship. You can then enter the ships hold and store those rations in the chests. Leave the ship. Enter the ship again and you'll be given 3 more rations. Do this a few times to make a food stockpile and you can actually do some traveling without getting stuck unable to move. Once food is more readily accessible (corpses, and probably eventually making real rations?), this exploit could be fixed, perhaps, by making ship rations a special sort of ration (S. Ration?) which could not be put into the chests on the ships hold, preventing the exploitation of it. Especially seeing as you could probably exploit them for gold too. Though I've yet to see a merchant.

All in all really amazing for just a 0.4. I'm very impressed. I'll be passing this along to some other folks I know.

EDIT: To get new rations at the ship, you have to not only exit the ship, but exit the ships tile and step back onto it on the map, thats what triggers the new rations, not actually entering the ship area.

EDIT 2: Don't use water flasks from the ocean...

EDIT 3: Found hostile village kinda dangerous still level 1.. mage.. lizardman village. Took em all out. Moving in now because it has a forge and a well.. wells are gooood ! ^_^

This is the homepage for Elona - NOT Elona Plus. The original game developer finally moved on and ceased development, sending his source code, notes, maps and whatnot to the new team he was allowing to take over.

However ElonaPlus is really just Elona getting fixes, updating systems, adding more content etc. So a lot of this stuff is going to be relevant. You can peruse the forums for tips, or ask for help. There is also an english wiki, not sure how extensive that is.

Be wary. Elona is a very weird game.. and the difficulty can spike like crazy.

Watch out for kobolds. Early game creature that can truly *F* your world up. They shield bash you, which causes an off-balanced status called *dimmed*. When you are Dimmed you basically take massive damage from everything because you're too out of it to avoid attacks properly etc. Something like that. Its dangerous either way. Dont let kobolds get close!

In a room full of creatures, if you are using magic spells or the F key to fire your ranged weapon, be advised that it autotargets the closest / closest enemy. If you're strong you can just hold down F or your spell shortcut and rapid fire/cast until everything is dead. But... if there are any non-hostile NPC's there you will end up hitting them to eventually. The * key on the numberpad is the default target selection key. Live and Die by it.  Nothing like going to sweep a room and accidentally shooting that Big Daddy that comes around the corner and having him gib you with his shotgun at close range.

Thats another thing, shotguns have an effective range for good damage of something like 2 squares, so stay 3 squares away at least. They are slow, its easy. Of course I could be off by a square, in which case you should stay 4 squares away.. heh.

Performer.. great way to make money and even items that get tossed at you.

But you have to watch out for the rocks. Some NPCs, especially some named ones like Loyter and He who walks in darkness (or whatever his name is) are EXTREMELY hard to please. Dont expect much great success / legendary success until you're like 20+ with performer, depending on your charisma. High speed is incredibly useful to make the performances finish faster and have less of a window to get killed by your audience.

Get as many pets as you can accomodate and go into your home. Play for your pets. No matter how bad you play, they will never kill you. The skill gains will be slow, but enough. Once you get maybe 6 or 7 skill, you can attempt playing in towns around low level NPC's but its still easy to die from them. And if high level NPCs.. guards.. named.. shopkeepers.. you name it.. happen to wander by. you die.

I would suggest getting to about 10 or so (with as much charisma as you can manage and any charisma and +perform skill equipment.

Then start doing easy "Party Time" quests.

They are not really 'easy'. You will die, a lot. You must learn which of the NPC's  you have the skill to play around in these party rooms and keep the ones that are dangerous out of your line of sight (they cant hear you then). As you get better you can play for the harder ones and/or position yourself with more NPCs in your sight to make more money off each performance. If rested, depending on speed, most characters can play 2-3 times in a party time if fully rested, not encumbered, and not murdered by the audience!


The more people listening the more your skill increases.. but only if you FINISH the performance without interuption. So it takes a while. Palmia typically has the most party time quests. As said before, you will die a lot.. but it is OKAY..

Here is why.

If you want to risk playing at low skill in the open world, go right ahead, but be aware of this. If you die in the regular world, the full death penalty (once high enough for it to apply).. will hit you. That means you can randomly lose items including equipment and take irreversible damage to your stats. Sure, you can gain your stats back by training them as usual, but it will slow you down. If you are practicing performer in these situations chances are you will be able to die in a rapid fire manner and soon find your stats so low your entire character is useless. Not to mention losing charisma (and speed due to strength loss causing you to be too weak to carry your stuff) is a self fulfilling prophecy of death as you become even less likely to succeed.

If you die in a quest world such as party time... there is no penalty. The quest simply ends.

As long as you dont spell it like that. Nobody likes a rougelike. You will catch a ton of flak if you name the channel rougelike and not roguelike. You'll have to disable all comments lol.

i'm still doing normal casts, its just, once I get low on them I know I wont run out of the spells because I can book them, so I dont have to bother being frugal, i just keep my stocks at about 100 or more to keep the cost low. Not solely book casting means my spells ARE being trained and quite often only one cast is needed. If its something dangerous I can maneuver to a safer spot to cast teh spell from the book if needed (assuming I dont just cast a different spell)

As of right now I have reached level 13 and have 25 different spellbooks in my inventory

I need to figure out what talents I want to take for the rest of my leveling though, now that I have great book caster everything else is in the air. Gotta take a look at the talents and see what looks good.

I'm not dumb enough to try book casting while fighting something like a quickling. (unless it was right next to me and i was casting a ball spell nicely leveled up. Those always hit :P

Lots of fun so far though. Pyramid is open. I'll do that soon.

Man I played the hell out of ADOM  back in the day.

Forgive my (lack of) post count, I'm actually a really longtime lurker here :D

So I read about the archmage 'challenge' and thought, hrm, I havn't played ADOM in a while, let alone TOO many wizards, that could be fun. And difficult.

So I make myself a female gray elf Wizard named Aiyra.

I couldn't POSSIBLY have gotten a better start.

I started with only two spell books but they were GREAT.

Fire Bolt! (beam damage for multiple enemies that has no risk of bouncing! WEE)
and
Freaking Strength of Atlas!

So already I have no issues with my weak strength and can carry anything and everything.

I read each book a few times but not enough for them to break / vanish.. because I'm going for an epic book caster.

Book casting usually takes x4 the power points to cast or so, but with talent trees taken all the way up to 'great book caster' I reduce it down to only x1.5 the cost of the spell, or 50% more. Book casting does not use up spell stocks (but requires you have them) and also does NOT increase spell expertise by using them (but cast the spell at the power of your expertise if you've trained it up through regular casting).

So I can normal cast all my spells til the stocks are at 100 or a bit lower and get them nice and strong basically.

Ok so I am now level 12 but here is what happened so far.

1: Created Wizzie, Started with awesome stuff. Wand Birthsign btw.
2: Grabbed Carpenter and Doggie quest.
3: Cleared puppy cavern. Did not let puppy survive (Didn't want TOO much of a lawful boost to where i might stop being neutral), but returned corpse to girl and told her what happened.

Puppy cave had 3 or 4 pools (saving for later when I can better deal with the bad effects), A neutral alter (right near a gnoll tension room.. LOVE it)

Puppy cave also has a specialty shop for SPELLBOOKS in it. Couldn't afford to buy them yet but I moved them all onto the same space so that there is room for more books to spawn while I'm away :D. Once I have money to come by the Mystic Shovel spellbook (and only read it once, til I find another copy) even more tactical options open up (and carefree stealing if I want to save time instead of taking forever in the infinite dungeon.. but as a book caster its not that big a deal not having tons of books)

Oh and the last floor had two lesser vaults where I got Seven League Boots to drop...


Yeah. Seven league boots at like level 3 or 4. Wizard is ROCKING. With those I can dance around everything in the game except quicklings (unless I did some major speed boosting). Putting myself into position for safe castings of spells, moving away when i need to recast Strength of Atlas etc.

4: Dangerous Cave (or whatever it was called.. the one where everything spawns like at 3x your level). Spent some CAREFUL time in here grabbing stuff and fire bolting lines of high level enemies for xp until I got the blanket etc, then I skidaddled. Seven League Boots + Coward mode for more dodge made this possible at level 9 without dying.

5: Infinite dungeon exploration for gear and extra spell books.

How I read my books now as a book caster.

I get a new book.. I read it 4 times. If it survives I keep it for book casting (books typically seem to have a max of 5 reads if your lucky, might go higher but if it does its super rare).

Right now I have Cure Disease and Cure Light Wounds (my last spell aquisitions). The Cure Light wounds book I only read TWICE because I wanted to be sure to save it til I found another. Its base cost is only 4 to cast, so I will level it to at least 10 (reducing it by 2 points to 50%, or the lowest possible cost of 2PP) and then I can book cast it for only 3 PP.. I have magic missile and ice ball, knock, light, slow monster and poison, stun ray! (yay), summon monsters (actually useful if you know what to do with it) and web.

I have spellbooks that survived for future bookcasting of these spells.
Cure Light Wounds
Fire Bolt
Ice Ball
Light
Magic Missile
Strength of Atlas
Stun Ray

I'm level 12 now and got my Greater Bookcasting talent. Book casting uses 3000 energy (food points) but I barely use any energy moving or attacking so I always have a surplus of food anyway.

I have a climbing set and need to get climbing up to 100 for the library to be .. easier.. to access. Going to get a couple more climbing sets in case they break etc. Then I should find a book of wish (and every other damn book).

Only 6 more levels til I can attempt to get to the library and get every damn spell in the game :D
