Traditional Roguelikes (Turn Based) / The Tomb of Naarumsin (new release)
« on: January 17, 2025, 01:34:10 PM »
The Tomb of Naarumsin is a text-based roguelike with deep combat mechanics. Chop off your enemy's hands and they'll drop their weapons, slice off their feet and they'll fall over. Remove (all of) their head(s) and they'll die. Bleed them to death, poison them, light them on fire, it's up to you!

Each of the seven levels contains different types of foes, from vampire bats to limb regenerating trolls, entangling octopi, dangerous giant spiders with webs and poison, zombies, and mechanical enemies left over by the dwarves. You will need to examine your enemies closely to figure out their weaknesses if you want to survive.

Use magic to gain an edge on your foes. Some of the dozens of spells included are:

- Graft Limb: Lost a foot? Need an extra arm? Want a spare head? Simply graft an enemy's chopped off limb onto your own body.

- A Way Home: Opens a magical door to your apartment, with special rooms that you can decorate with the limbs and weapons of your defeated enemies.

- The Floor is Lava: burn off your enemy's feet, then burn up the rest of them once they fall over.

- Possess: take over an enemy's body and fight as them.

- Enthrall: force an enemy to fight on your side.

- Reincarnate: raise a dead enemy as a zombie! They can't hold weapons anymore but they can grapple very effectively.

- Summoning: summon creatures to fight on your side, each with unique abilities.

- Grow Fangs: grow vampiric fangs that heal you when they do damage (if the limb you target can bleed).

I got an error trying to run it on Linux:

"dlopen(): error loading libfuse.so.2

AppImages require FUSE to run."

I was able to fix it by installing fuse, which apparently comes standard on most distros. I'm on Xubuntu.

In the "How does... 'Time' work?" dialogue, it says that vampires are seen outside during the day. I'm assuming that's a typo since another tooltip says the opposite.

I had a fun time playing and of course died opening a coffin before I managed to find any useful loot. My debt is worse than ever. Very enjoyable game, thanks for sharing!

Hi everyone! First post here. I wrote a game engine called EverRogue that lets you create your own text-based rogue-like games. The engine is inspired by Kyle's Quest (for those who remember the palm pilot era) and Dwarf Fortress. It's free and open source, and comes along with a game called Escape From Castle Black.

In Escape From Castle Black you play as a prisoner locked up in the dungeon of an evil king who's cutting limbs off his prisoners and eating them. However, he's not all bad- he also gives them a potion to grow their limbs back. Sometimes they grow tentacles instead. Your turn has finally come, but you made some preparations and are able to escape. Now you must fight your way up through the castle and kill the king.

Combat:

Creatures are modeled as trees, so you can cut their limbs off (just like the evil king! Why should he have all the fun?). Limbs have tags that control what you can do with them- so creatures that lose all their limbs with a "grasp" tag can't hold weapons, armor is equipped to particular types of limbs, you fall over if you lose enough feet, etc. Here's what a round of combat looks like:

I'm not allowed to post external links yet due to the forum anti-spam filter, but if you google the game you'll find a reddit thread with a link. I'll update this post once I'm allowed to.

You can also write your own games using the engine, and it doesn't require a lot of coding knowledge (the engine is in Python). Escape From Castle Black is documented so if you want to write your own game using EverRogue, look there. Hope you guys enjoy and I look forward to hearing your feedback!
