Development Process & non-technical / Livestreaming a 7DRL
« on: November 22, 2013, 10:09:25 PM »
Hey all!

So I recently started idling in #rgrd again and came across SRD's "tvtropes game jam" that will be starting this weekend. I've been toying with the idea of livestreaming game development for a while, and I figure that this would be a great way to test out the idea. After some careful consideration of the various platforms, I've decided that for at least an hour a night during the game jam, I'll stream development on twitch.tv, just to see how it turns out.

Has anyone ever tried/considered streaming game development? Has it ever turned out to be a good idea?

Traditional Roguelikes (Turn Based) / Crossfire con Curses
« on: July 02, 2010, 12:45:39 PM »
Hello everyone. I'm the silent idler from #rgrd who sometimes releases things. Sorry if this is the wrong thread to put this.

As a bit of a boredom project, I've written a terminal client for the Roguelike-like game Crossfire ( http://crossfire.real-time.com ). The aptly named 'Crossfire con Curses' can be found on my site ( http://isharacomix.com/downloads/project_cfcurses.html ).

I've been playing Crossfire with my brother for the past week using this client, and while it's a little quirky, I've had a blast using it. I can't stand the CF graphics or client, so I put this together. This is a not-serious program that I put together since I had the protocol document and nothing better to do with my time, but I thought I'd share it nonetheless. There's a Windows binary in the package along with the source code, but I have no earthly idea what it does.

It only works with CF version 1.50, and has a nasty tendency to bring about server crashes/hangs that don't happen with the official client (I hope to start writing some patches when I encounter these crashes to help out). I strongly suggest using this on a local server.

Sounds like a colossal project!

I definitely like the city-based map style as opposed to the traditional dungeon style (something I've wanted to play around with in the past). Maybe there could also be some sort of winding subway network under the city too. Automated trains would be a pretty nifty way of getting from place to place, and there could be random encounters while you ride.

It would be cool if, since the world is alive anyway, to be able to install security cameras or trap monsters in rooms and watch them on monitors to observe their behavior and such things.

Another nifty thing would be 'day-night' cycles. Aliens and scientists both need to sleep. If you can figure out what monsters generally feed at what times, you can avoid them and catch up on your beauty rest a the same time. Inline with the security camera idea, it would be neat to watch a security recording showing how dangerous that night was for you. Furthermore, collecting the DNA of monsters with different sleep cycles may affect the way your character gets tired in the game.

It looks like there're basically two ways to win. Either scavenge the city and obtain enough material to get back home (spaceship or some such thing), or conquer the world for yourself. I already want to play it. Looks like a deep and complex game. Not to mention, a 'bones file' for a game with this much simulated growth and evolution would increase the depth of the game in unbelievable ways.

Full screen on the Ubuntu virtual terminal!

I wish I could get on an old Unix terminal just so I can see how they played them in the old days. That would be so awesome.

Hello world. I've been debating with myself for a while now whether I should register here or not, and I decided in the end to just go ahead and give it a shot.

I really got into the RL genre when I first played 'hack' in Ubuntu's BSDgames package. Once I found it, I pretty much downloaded every game in the repository that showed up in a search for 'roguelike.' Out of all of them, the one that I enjoyed the most was Gearhead. Since I found it, I've been lurking on the roguebasin wiki for a while, and even popped in on an IRC session once.

I'm a Free Software-obsessed terminal addict who particularly likes the C language (although I'm also a strong Python supporter). I'm weird in that I prefer to program strictly in the C89 standard, and play RLs in full-screen glory on my old CRT monitor. In my spare time, I'm also an undergraduate Computer Science student (isn't THAT interesting?). I think it'd be nice to develop some games in the genre, since RLs seem like something I might just be able to handle. Not to mention that the 7DRLs look like they'd be fun challenges to take part in.

I also have a habit of not shutting up when I finish saying what I need to say. Maybe I can break myself of that habit while I'm here.
