The Roguebasin / Planned maintenance 23rd of October 2017 01:00-05:30 CET
« on: October 19, 2017, 04:28:51 AM »
I got an e-mail from the hosting provider where Roguebasin resides. They will do a massive network upgrade on the 23rd of October, starting at 01:00 CET with a planned finish no later than 05:30. Access to Roguebasin will likely be affected during those hours.

Thanks! Great idea to split votes by category. As a developer of a mobile roguelike I would have liked to see a category like "best smartphone roguelike" or something like that.

I haven't experience any problems with the feeds. How are you consuming the feed? Google Reader? An RSS reader extension to your browser? Thunderbird?

I've added the feed url/domain in brackets to the end of each post. It's the best I could do without too much work and it should help people to see the source of each post

I removed 7drl.org from the aggregation. I will have a look at improving the feed titles and add channel title as suggested.

I get this message:

This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below.

It looks like just a bunch of html script as far as I can tell. Not very readable. I'm using google chrome.
Ah, sorry, what I did was to deliver an aggregation of most of the listed blogs into a single RSS feed. You can view that feed in your favorite rss reader (try Google Reader) or browser extension. There is no underlying site to render the content (although that could easily be added)

Thank you for the list. I've updated the aggregator and added feeds that seemed active (had posts during 2011)

I took most of the feeds I had in Google Reader, fed them through Yahoo Pipes, and got a new Roguelike feed aggregator:

http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id=30d42fa75562a4d66bf9dcfbb5a6f147&_render=rss

Give it a try and let me know if things aren't working as expected (wrong order of items etc). Please post more feeds to add here or send me an e-mail.

Yes, I've sent him the feed URL for my own Dweller blog. But how does it all work "behind the stages"? I had a look at some online tools to aggregate feeds and produce a single feed as output (for instance Yahoo Pipes). If Elderlore is down permanently I volunteer to set up it's successor

How does the Elderlore feed aggregator work? Did Altefact build his own aggregator or is he using something already available? Is there a way to see all available feeds? I'm thinking that if he doesn't get things up and running it might be worth a shot looking in to moving it all.

The Roguebasin / Re: RogueBasin erroring out?
« on: June 03, 2011, 10:03:36 PM »
The site got hacked in some way. Some malicious content was injected on each page via some nastiness in index.php. After some googling it was evident that this same kind of hack occurred not only on Mediawiki but on CMS systems like Joomla, phpbb and so on (could it be a vulnerability in the ever so popular recaptcha?). Removing the hack from index.php only worked for a shot period of time and then the hack was reintroduced via some php that got invoked outside of the webroot. Removing that injectionscript made the whole thing go away, but to make sure we still didn't have a vulnerability somewhere I decided to go for a fresh MediaWiki install using the latest version. The recaptcha was also upgraded and I decided not to use the same code highlighting extension as in the previous version as that extension hadn't been updated in years.

Anyway, things should be back to normal now. If things fall apart again please e-mail me at bjorn dot ritzl at gmail dot com.

The webhost used for hosting Roguebasin went down today. They are working on the issue and I hope roguebasin will be up in a couple of hours.

Hey guys. I got an e-mail from Slash mentioning poor performance. I'll reproduce my response here and add some more thoughts:

"I have been away on a two week vacation. Sorry for the late response. As far as I know the only planned downtime was on december 19th between 09.00 and 12.00 CET.

A moment ago when I tried to access Roguebasin I couldn't get through. My thought was that it was the DB server that was down at the moment. www.roguelikedevelopment.org was working so the webserver is running. Now that I access the DB using phpMyAdmin it responds and Roguebasin is accessible again. Must have been a temporary glitch.

And now that I try again it responds slowly... weird.

I'm no DB expert but perhaps we should try and optimize some of the tables or something? You can access phpMyAdmin here:

http://www.scorpionshops.com/phpMyAdmin

and use the normal DB user and pass. Remember to pick Server 1 as that is the one used. The DB server responds fast when clicking around in phpMyAdmin, so maybe it is something else? The new extension you installed?"

On a side note: I play World of Warcraft and host our guild site and forums using the same provider (altough on one of the other DB servers). We had some issues with site performance, but that proved to be an incorrectly configured phpBB. The site also had some performance issues during the fall, but all of that have been ssolved for a few months now (new hardware installed by the hosting provider). So all in all, things are working well, without any latency, 500 errors or similar. Could it be something with the mediawiki setup?
