Awesome. I really like it.

Latest version is not working for me: when I try to open the .exe, an error stating that I'm missing MSVCP110D.dll pops up.

After a bit of digging, the internet tells me that it's a file that comes with the Visual Studio 2010 redistributable.

I installed it, but the problem is still there.

Player's Plaza / Re: suggestions for a "thematic" RL?
« on: May 03, 2014, 11:26:55 AM »
Some other very thematic RLs you might try:
  • DoomRL
The setting is, well, Doom. So very definite as a theme, while of course having almost no kind of in-depth lore. Gameplay is very fast-paced. You can do melee, but the focus is obviously ranged weapons, which to me makes it very different from other roguelikes.
  • Unreal World
Set in a mythical Iron Age Finland. Very survival centered. From my very limited play experience, it has somewhat awkward controls, but huge depth.
  • Cogmind
A 7DRL. You are a robot, and can, in lieu of character progression, attach a variety of parts (propulsion system, weapons, reactors, etc.) to yourself. I have to admit I've got zero playing experience with this, but it looks really good on paper.

Programming / Re: Where to start?

@ Jo
Sorry, I was tired and didn't explain myself properly.
What you said was already crystal clear to me (especially after faffing around a bit with the 15-step tutorial: I can sort of understand what I'm copying, but sure as hell I couldn't do anything on my own).

My goal would be learning a language while trying to code some sort of RL, so I meant to ask if anybody here knew about a manual or something that explained a programming language while explaining how to code some sort of game.
Long shot, I know.

Guess I'll choose among one of the hundreds of tutorials floating around the net (if someone had recommendations on that, please, I'm all ears).

@ Zireael
I was thinking of learing Python, to be honest. Anyway, is the T-Engine very flexible, or am I going to end up with something close to TOME (which I dislike)?

Also, OP, sorry for the thread hijack.

On a related note, what material would you recommend for somebody (me) who has zero programming experience but would want to try his hand at making a roguelike?
Besides that 15-step tutorial on roguebasin, of course.
Thanks for any help.

7DRLs / Re: Goldfish (7DRL 2014, Success)

Ahah, awesome theme.
The game is quite fun for a bit, and the "graphics" are very nice.
As a sidenote, the leftmost part of the game window is outside the boundary of my monitor (using firefox, on windows).

Well, holy shit, I didn't even suspect that was a bot.

Player's Plaza / Re: looking for an rl with much crafting
« on: February 26, 2014, 11:30:40 PM »
Maybe you could try Mage Guild.
Very strong focus on "crafting", since you can combine everything with (mostly) everything (i.e. combine a potion of permanence with one of inversion and you get a potion of change; combine a potion of absorption with some troll remains and you get a potion of heal; etc.).
Obviously there isn't a list of possible recipes in-game.

PS: I've linked to its roguebasin page because the original website was overrun by spambots. Latest version should still be downloadable from there. If not, I've got it and can upload somewhere if needed.

Early Dev / Re: Wanderers / open world RL

Hey, this looks interesting.
Too bad I'm on Windows and don't know the first thing about coding/compiling.
Here's hoping somebody will compile for Windows, or suggest a workaround (which is not going to be "install Linux").

Other Announcements / Re: A new roguelike - The Ground Gives Way

If you're prepared to say, I'd like to know when you're planning to release (something more precise than early '14).

Looking awesome, by the way.

@NON
Alright, didn't know that about IA.

Also, I'll second Sil as a recommendation.

Mh, you might try unBrogue (a variant of Brogue, which adds loads of new items and changes some mechanics).
Follow this link and you can get the most recent version (release candidate 1 for version 1.17, instead of the older versions you can find on its webpage).
The only problems are that a) it's not being actively developed anymore, b) it's not completely stable and c) it's based on an older version of Brogue (1.6.4 IIRC).

You might also try Infra Arcana.
It uses anoter set of Oryx's tiles, has a Lovercraftian theme and it's bastard hard (no reported wins, IIRC).

- unBrogue: Is this popular?
Don't know, isn't the point of this poll to find out?

-unBrogue's updates shadow Brogue's updates on a delayed basis over on ASCII Dreams as the project that seems to have summoned him away from unAngband indefinitely---I understand them to be well received by the Brogue folks in general and the next update or so is supposed to be rather substantial to reclaim pace with Brogue proper.
Do you know for sure or are you speculating? Because my understanding was that unBrogue had been abandoned (and what a pity that is).

Could you add Caves of Qud and unBrogue to the list?
