Early Dev / The Ground Gives Way (Indie Spotlight #5)
« on: July 24, 2014, 01:32:22 AM »
I haven't really seen a gameplay/feedback thread for this game so I thought I'd start one.

The Ground Gives Way looks like a really promising new-comer with a nice UI, easy to learn gameplay and control scheme and play-style that focuses on development through item acquisition rather than levelling (see: grinding) or classes (see: restricting gameplay options). Overall, I'm excited to see where this one goes.

I did a little review video for my Indie Spotlight series, let me know what you guys think of the game and give me some suggestions on other newly developed games I could look into. Thanks again to getter77 for the recommendation!

Sounds awesome!

Any plans for implementing status effects like poison, necrosis or burns?

I love detailed systems like this, they add a lot of flavor to game-play for sure! My Dwarf Fortress-obsessed friend is always telling me about crazy combat logs in his games, it can turn really bizarre and hilarious really quickly. Please keep us up to date on how this is going :)

I'm inspired to make a more detailed and interactive combat system that would let players fine-tune how they use different weapons: stances, targeting, grip, combination attacks, etc.

Just one question: Does a realistic anatomy also imply realistic fatality and realistic healing rate? It doesn't take too many stabs to bring down a regular person and even if you do survive, it could be months before you're back in action.

Player's Plaza / Re: Nethack - Ascensions

I've ascended 3 times, valkyire wizard and monk (with barbarian, samurai and priest getting incredibly close). Ascending isn't easy, but there are certainly some tricks that can make it easier:

  • Certain classes like valkyrie, knight and samurai are substantially easier to ascend with.
  • As mentioned before, spoilers are nearly essential. There's such a huge amount of meta-knowledge that managing it all becomes a skill in itself. Don't be afraid to use spoilers.
  • Knowing when to run, engrave "Elbereth," teleport away or pick another branch is an important part of survivability. That just comes in time.
  • Lamps that sell in shops for 75zk are magical. Bless them with holy water and #rub them for a wish!
  • Have a good idea of what things are safe to eat and what things will grant intrinsics (again, spoilers)
  • Watch your luck, if you are having trouble try playing on days with a new moon

There are literally hundreds more tips to help you towards ascension. The learning curve is steep and once you get to a certain point (~level 15) victory is almost guaranteed. I have an ongoing Let's Play series which I will probably be ascending soon. If you want to learn some tips and tricks, you can check it out here. Good luck and happy hacking!

Not a bad idea! Who wants to LP-trade? :)

Sounds awesome! I just finished listening to your Roguelike Radio episode on LPs :)

7DRLs / Let me LP your 7DRL
« on: July 10, 2013, 11:20:15 PM »
Hey, I've been following the Seven Day Roguelike Challenge for a few years and last year I decided to LP a few of the entrants. I picked the games more or less haphazardly and didn't get around to playing nearly as many games as I wanted to.

This year I knew I wanted to cover a variety of 7DRL games but I wasn't too sure which ones to pick. I thought I would ask if any developers wanted my to do an LP of their 2013 7DRL game or other 7DRL games you would want to see?
