Other Announcements / IRDC 2016 New York City: August 6-7
« on: March 05, 2016, 12:56:40 AM »
Hi folks, long time no post :)

Formally announcing the sequel to last year's IRDC Atlanta - IRDC New York City, August 6 - 7! Hosted by myself, with the generous help of NYU Game Center, a beautiful space in downtown Brooklyn dedicated to independent game community in the New York area. The name may be familiar to longtime Roguelike Radio fans - department chair Frank Lantz was on an episode!

If you'd like to get email updates, sign up on this Google form!

The main source of information will be through RogueBasin.

If you'd be interested in speaking, or helping in any way, please let me know! Assistance running equipment to stream/record like we did in Atlanta last year would be particularly nice, though anything from offering shared hotel rooms to ideas for post-con conversation spots would be appreciated.

Other Announcements / PAX Prime roguelike fan meetup?
« on: May 14, 2014, 02:52:12 PM »
Hey folks!

PAX Prime is a big video game convention in Seattle, Washington, USA happening the last weekend of August, through that Monday (September 1, which is Labor Day, a federal holiday here in the US). Any other roguelike folks planning to go? It'd be nice to meet up!

Or if you like your buildup a little slower and your movement not twitchy and still tactical in the roguelike tradition, there's always Dungeonmans (which is about to finish its Kickstarter and just got fully funded!)

Haha, I hope I'm at least a little entertaining. And a good chat room, where people can interact with each other and with the commentator in real time, helps a lot with that I think.

Monthly instead of weekly would probably be wise, and I like the idea of developer input - it's really what makes the roguelike community so special. I'm in contact with the showrunner of Zeldathon, who's kinda mentoring me about the charity end, and his roommate's been helping me with the how-to-use-Twitch-and-OBS end. Once I get those down I'll start reaching out to folks.

Thanks for your help and input!

I am up for writing about various games with descriptions, considering I'm not a dev, and/or linking to my LPs of some of the games. (Linking to the work GameHunter, myself, or others have done would actually be a great way to present games, much like the intro videos on Steam store pages.)

I posted this on the roguelikes subreddit, but I'll reiterate it here and see if any of you have any thoughts on this.

I really like video game charity marathons.

Traditional examples are things like Desert Bus for Hope and Zeldathon. In these, many people gather in one room and play a game or series of games, not stopping for many days, collecting money along the way that goes directly to a charity of the group's choosing. Their exploits - both in game and in the room - are broadcast online with an active chat room going alongside, and there's often silly things done on camera in exchange for donations. The chat keeps the participants energized and excited, and gives them something to interact with other than the game itself.

I really think there's room out there for roguelikes to be streamed online for charity. It would never make the many thousands of dollars these marathons make, but it could give a tidy sum to a worthy cause.

I think an interesting way to do this would be to stream on a channel fairly regularly - say a few hours every Saturday evening, depending on who's willing to stream - with donations open to a charity of our choice. People of any skill level would be welcome - and indeed, it may be useful to show early, mid, and late game strategies from people who understand the larger games. And people could play whichever roguelikes and roguelikelike/roguelite games they like - the more variety, the better.

Would people be willing to watch this? Stream for it, interacting with chat and commentating while they play? Would people be willing to donate to charity in exchange for the entertainment and information they'd get from it? Do you have particular charities you'd like to see this go to?

What are your thoughts on streaming roguelikes for charity?

Have I not introduced myself here yet...? Whoops!

I'm Kawa, also known as KawaiiDragoness on Youtube and Twitter.

You probably have heard me on Roguelike Radio by now if you've been paying attention in the recent episodes, with the exception of IRDC, considering I could not go to Poland.

I Let's Play Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup (formerly also Dungeons of Dredmor, Faster than Light, and Red Rogue - Dredmor may return soon) and do examinations of various ASCII implementations in video form. While I haven't LPed them (or at least not more than my general ASCII glance), I also play quite a bit of ADoM, Brogue, and HyperRogue. I have yet to beat a roguelike, though I try to be very knowledgeable about the genre.

I was very, VERY briefly a judge on this year's 7DRL, but real life was in the way for me to be as involved in that as I would like. Hopefully this will change for future years.

One day I will get over my coding phobia and make a roguelike about marine biology (currently code named Odell Down Rogue). If you get that reference, you probably played as many mid/late 90s "edutainment" games as I did before I found roguelikes.

Beyond the roguelike sphere, I do like other independent games and Let's Play Minecraft on interesting public servers. I like nail polish, webcomics, manga, origami, and baking without eggs. I was a mathematics major in undergrad and also have a Master's in Operations Research. I live in New York City and am trying to figure my life out beyond my hobbies.

Anyone here play artificial life games/simulations? My partner is a huge fan of AquaZone, what with its surprisingly accurate genetics, but everything since has just been "ooh look at the pretty fishes" without thinking about, you know, biology.

That is partially an artifact of my recording software (you'll note it doesn't happen in Rogue Rage, Attack the Geth, and HyperRogue - to pick up the console, my software has to pick up the whole desktop, but it can pick up the T-Engine and Java on its own) and actually partially intentional. This is exactly what you see on my (slightly old but still quite modern) desktop with its full 1280x1024 resolution, and some games handle this large screen well, and others don't. If you can, turn up the quality to 720p, and it should be fairly crisp. Not perfect sadly because of Youtube's compression, but I do what I can.

I'll definitely cover more games - InfraArcana would be interesting!

So in a similar but also completely different way than Game Hunter, I've made a handful of roguelike Let's Plays on Youtube. My most recent series compared and contrasted various roguelikes in their "non-graphical" (i.e. ASCII) style. Feel free to check out the playlist, let me know what you think, and suggest other games for me to play!

I do like Doctors Without Borders and the Red Cross, but I would double check what proportion of their fundraising goes to works over administrative costs.

As an alternate option, how about charity: water? They create wells to bring clean water to communities throughout the world. All of their administrative costs are funded by specific sponsors so that every dollar of public fundraising (like the roguelike bundle proceeds) would go directly to well building efforts.
