Classic Roguelikes / Re: Does anyone play Moria anymore?
« on: February 27, 2013, 04:10:30 PM »
I've been playing (non-color) moria 5.5.2 at work(!) periodically.  I didn't think it looked enough like a game that anyone would catch on... then, a few weeks ago, a coworker looks at my screen and says...

"Is that... rogue?"

I almost fell out of my chair!  It's a small world.  I've never even seen rogue... I though being a moria player set me apart a little, but this guy really has me beat!  Needless to day, I gave him a copy of the game. :)  ...Using the corporate shared drive.

I'll post my game updates to the thread that Munge mentioned.  It seems like a better fit.

BTW, Brogue looks awesome, but it definitely looks like a game!

I'll add this to my reading list!  Thanks!

I've also been going through Trystan's roguelike tutorial (Java) and Steve Losh's "Caves of Clojure" (clojure, obviously.)  If anyone's interested, here are he links to those:

Moria rocks and is still good today (surprisingly). See http://roguetemple.com/forums/index.php?topic=719.0 Some guy called "corremn" claims to have finished it.

Just play a colored version like: http://www.roguelikedevelopment.org/archive/files/executables/mor552c.zip

Thanks for the links.

I'm starting to realize that I don't have time to climb the learning curve on the newer games, so I'm inclined to stick with what I know.  I'm looking forward to trying out the color version of Moria.

@Jo: Yes, I was thinking (immediately after I posted) that this was a big can of worms.  Maybe I should have just stuck with my original question!  It has been 20 years after all, but things still look very similar on the surface!

@Quendus: That link is awesome.  Our compilers are so boring these days.

Anyway, I did read up on Angband today, and downloaded ToME and Sil.  I'll look at some others over the weekend.  The Tolkein theme in Sil along with the superb documentation really have my attention at the moment.

Classic Roguelikes / Does anyone play Moria anymore?

Hi everyone,

A friend introduced me to Moria back in 1990 or 1991.  I haven't played it in sometime, and have never beaten it, and I'm wondering if I should go for it or just try something more modern.

Some questions:
Is anyone playing Moria anymore (from the looks of it, no, but I have to ask!)

What are some of the significant advancements that have been made in the genre since then?

In retrospective, what were/are some of the shortcomings of Moria?

Which modern major Rogue-like is most like Moria?  (Randomized, non-persistent dungeon levels and permadeath are musts for me!)

I will, of course, go download some and try them for myself.  In the meantime, discussion is welcome!
