Classic Roguelikes / Re: Leading Angband Variant?

I'll throw out there that if you are starting on 'bands, there's nothing wrong with "vanilla". It's a great game that's stood the test of time. I like how it basically let's you play at your own pace.

One of my biggest regrets were clearing out a load of old RPGs, including Runequest 2, my copy of the Rules Cyclopedia, and old copies of the original versions of Stormbringer and Pendragon

Still my fave version of D&D bar none. One night, me and my two usual gaming buddies sat down, made a random (more or less) dungeon, 7 characters and played until they all died, in 3 hours or so. Can't beat that

I am absolutely thrilled that along with linux and windows 7...there's support for DOS and Amiga OS :)

I downloaded the new beta promptly to my Amiga 1200. Because rogue-likes run well on 56 mhz :)

Jjust be warned. This rabbit hole is very deep :)

So I always thought Roguelikes was something neat, but I could never get a grip on it. Several months back, I found Dungeon Crawl, and got sucked in. Since then, I've played a ton. TOME, Dungeon Crawl, BRogue, Frozen Depths, Dungeons of Dredmor, Angband, the Doom RL, ADOM (a little) and others.

My fave is probably Angband overall, but I have come to the conclusion that there's not really a gaming experience out there as intense and exciting as a roguelike, despite the limited graphics and arcane interfaces. It's that something you can't explain.

It might be worth mentioning BRogue. It's not as intense and comprehensive as Crawl or Hack, but its very fun, and a good game to learn on.

Im pretty terrible but that's okay. Journey, not destination, right?

Haven't beaten any, and doubt I will anytime soon, but the feeling when you find something you haven't seen before or reach an area you never got to before, is intoxicating. There really is nothing quite like it in computer gaming.

I'll second (third?) BRogue. Looks great, you can play with the mouse, and the list of controls are quite limited.

It also has a nice "less is more" feeling.

I found learning to play Dungeon Crawl was a lot easier. The tutorials are really good.
The skill system is quite nice as well, and there's a lot of replay
