Thank you Skeletor. Just reading the scroll of fear was enough. Then I quickly left the level. :)

Looking again at the character dump, my scroll of fear seems perfect for this situation.

1.  I guess I should read it now?

2.  If I do, what should I then do next?  Rest until I'm back at full HP?

The orc warrior hits you with a glowing orcish great mace!
_Ouch! That really hurt!
_You climb upwards.
There is a stone staircase leading down here.

Hi all,

My Spriggan Enchanter was at full health until an orc warrior hit me once on the way up a set of stairs.  That one hit took away three fifths of my health.  In retrospect, I should've cast Ensorcelled Hibernation or Confuse on him while he was a few grids away from me downstairs, then Stabbed him.  Well, hindsight is 20/20.

Could you please advise me on what to do now?  (Note:  I doubt Recite would be useful:  it takes three turns according to a CrawlWiki page.)

Character dump attached.  Thanks in advance.

Sorry dude... didn't want to overwhelm with information. The reason why berserk is such a bitch-goddess is that how long it lasts depends on what you're doing. Say you get roughly 10-15 rounds of berserk: if you're fighting, each attack takes one turn. If you're moving, each move takes maybe 4-5 rounds in terms of berserk length. So it's really hard to run away, because the effect ends just as soon as you start trying to run... I should have emphasized the blink scroll a little more. Sorry man.

Not your fault.  I should have stopped for a few more seconds between each move and though carefully what to do; I was, after all, fighting a hydra.  My fault.  :)

2) Since you have a scroll of blinking, I would put distance between myself and the hydra with your few remaining turns of berserk, then blink down the long hallway to put even more distance between you and it. Then you can use a scroll of fear (or two) in order to make it stop chasing you for those precious turns you'll need in order to flee back to safety. Alternately, depending on how damaged the hydra is, you can use your wand of cold to kill it - a few shots is all it should take.

I walked a couple of steps away; the berserk ended that soon.  Then I zapped cold.  This was a mistake.  The hydra soon got me.

Too bad.  Thank you for the help anyway Jim.

Hi all,

I would like your advice again please.  I'm playing Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup 0.4.4.  My character, a level 10 demonspawn crusader of Lugonu, is up against an eight-headed hydra.  I'm holding an uncursed runed trident:  not my best weapon, but my best weapon is shield-incompatible.  I forgot how powerful eight-headed hydras are.  So, when I came across the hydra, I used Fire Brand to temporarily make it flaming.  I hit the hydra twice.  The first time, my necklace of Bloodlust {*Rage +Rage MR Str+2 Int-2 Dam+3 Stlth- Curse} made me go berserk.  The second time, I stayed berserk and hit the hydra again.  Each time it hit me back, it took away 45% or so of my health.  I don't know why I hit it the second time:  maybe I figured it wouldn't hurt me so badly that time.  Anyway, now the hydra is at yellow strength and I've taken a step away.

Here is my resultant screen.  I'm still berserk.

1.  Did I enter the Lair too early in the game?

2.  What should I do now?  I can't read, quaff, cast, zap, shoot, or unwield anything.  Nor can I use any of my Lugonu-given abilities.

Please see the attached character dump.  I've inserted a couple of screens of Ctrl+P information into the dump file.

Thanks in advance,

Ancient, after reading your post, I tried to enslave a basic orc as you suggested.  Here's what happened:

Code: [Select]
The orc resists.
This wand has 3 charges left.
The orc warrior misses you.
The orc hits you but doesn't do any damage.
The orc knight hits you with a runed orcish war axe.
* * * LOW HITPOINT WARNING * * *
The orc warrior hits you with a runed orcish halberd!
You die...

Thank you, corremn, jim, and Ancient, for trying to help anyway.

I still wonder:

1.  Did I enter the Orcish Mines too early in the game?

3.  Why was O:3 an open field?  I've never seen O:3 be a field.  Was this a bug?  A rare random occurence?  By design?

Hi all,

I would like your advice please.  I'm playing Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup 0.4.4.  My character, a level 11 Mountain Dwarf Chaos Knight of Makhleb, is surrounded by eight orcs, including two orc warriors and an orc knight.  Here's how it happened:  When my character became level 11 or so, I entered the Orcish Mines.  I went down through a certain staircase from O:2 to O:3, but realized there was an open field containing dozens of enemies down on O:3.  I've never seen an open field like that in the Orcish Mines.  I immediately went back up.  I didn't set a level annotation containing an exclamation mark, though, and so I later accidentally went back down that staircase.  I was at full HP before I went down the stairs.

Now here is my screen.

                   #....####...#    J the Cleaver

               ### ###    ##.##
                           ###

1.  Did I enter the Orcish Mines too early in the game?

2.  After I went downstairs into O:3 the second time, was it a mistake to immediately come back upstairs?

3.  Why is O:3 an open field?  I've never seen O:3 be a field.  Is this a bug?  A rare random occurence?  By design?

4.  What should I do now?  All I can think of is to wield my dagger of protection, or to read a scroll of teleportation, or to try to enslave the orc knight or an orc warrior with my wand of enslavement.  Do you have any better ideas?  What do you think is my best strategy for survival?

Please see the attached j.txt, my character dump.  Also, if you like, see the attached previous_message_log.txt also.  It has about two screens of Ctrl+P information.

Thanks in advance,
