Title: Rogue-likes and Diablo 3
Post by: Troy_Costisick on February 28, 2015, 03:38:32 PM

New to this website and rogue-likes in general.  Since I discovered the genre recently thanks to Rogue Legacy, I was wondering if people who were really into rogue-likes considered the Diablo series to be "rogue-like" or something else.  How do people feel about this?  Just wondering if my prior experience in those games would be helpful in the newer rogue-like games that have come out recently. :)

Not really. It has some of the design elements but it's an action game. Roguelikes tend to be more turn based or strategy style games.

Also there's no permadeath in Diablo. You can turn that feature on, but Diablo is not a permadeath game it's a grinding and loot pinata game. A good Roguelike attempts to teach you the game by killing you over and over while you get a little better each time. Diablo isn't that at all. Still a fun game it's just not very representative of the genre, even though it does have many RL style elements.

There are a lot of action RP type games with tons of rogue influence that are lumped into the RL genre, like Rogue Legacy and Spelunky and Binding of Isaac and what not. Even people that lump those in will usually not consider Diablo 3.

Ah, I totally see where you're coming from.  That makes sense to me.  Thanks! :)

Two days back, I saw this young champ tweeting on his Windows Phone in his SUV-crossover, having a soft drink whilst he's waiting to get greenlit on this boulevard near my apt. I wouldn't have noticed him if he hadn't forgotten about, like, three cars behind him so they had begun to honk like hell - but nevermind that. :) What's important is that a minute ago I was SMSing a guy I know about CataDDA's new build and I thought to myself how this guy, the guy behind the wheel, prolly never knew what's a roguelike.
Altough I don't really care, I'm pretty sure he's only heard about Diablo3 and pretends to know, more or less, everything about it.

I guess RLs stick to people who care about what other people know about.

For me, when I am looking at Roguelikes, I also like to look at games that are INFLUENCED by the Roguelike genre. Diablo is undoubtedly inspired by the roguelike genre, in particular the first game which may not have a lot of the gameplay features of roguelikes, but the inspiration and THEME of the game are undoubtedly roguelike inspired. The theme of descending into a randomly/procedurally generated dungeon with a task that involves fighting and surviving your way down to the final level is a very clear roguelike theme.

While I wouldn't label Diablo and Diablo-clones (and I do say Diablo-clones and not ARPGs, because ARPGs could mean a lot of games that are NOT like Diablo) roguelikes, necessarily, for me my love of Diablo-clones comes from my love of Roguelikes, and the ways in which they are similar. So while I do agree that I wouldn't label them as roguelikes, I do NOT agree with the way most people seem to just dismiss the idea of there being any connection between the two, and refusing to discuss them. There is a huge connection there, and I think that history is important!

Diablo is Gauntlet-like. I don't know why people associate it with roguelikes.

The developers cite Moria as an influence. Diablo has procedural generation but it's not used for anything, it could have just as easily been made without it and been the same game.
