i noticed a few threads similar to this but none that ask what your favorite roguelike is, the closeset thread to this is "what would your dream roguelike have?"
mine would have to be ADOM by a longshot. you can do anything plus it isnt just one goal to beat the game but there is quite a few goals and quests to get one of the multiple endings, you are not al the time in a dungeon (there is an overworld map) plus there are caves and unique areas to explore like the tower of eternal flames and the underwater caves. there are special areas, like an arena, casino, vaults, etc... there are multiple artifacts needed to beat the game such as the elemental orbs, and so many ways to do things. it also features unique ways to get past things, like you need the trident of the red rooster if you are a lawful guy wanting to pass through the chaos gate and slay the chaos god. there is background elements like background corruption and various special effects rooms. overall adom is an incredible roguelike with everything. thats why my favorite rogelike is adom.
your turn :)
-
ZAngband followed by Nethack.
-
I only played a few simple ones, but so far, Nethack is my favorite, And Crawl is second, Rogue would be third if it classified as a Roguelike :P
-
DoomRL is the one I have played seriously in rogueplayer mode, and the one I enjoy the most, I also like ADOM, Moria and rogue. Papaki also looked interesting although development seems to have stopped.
-
In no particular order;
DoomRL
IVAN
Incursion
SewerJacks ;)
Crawl
And ADOM not that I have played if for years and am not likely to unless a new release comes out.
-
DoomRL is probably my favorite, but I also enjoy Drash, Scrap, SewerJacks, and Frozen Depths quite a bit. Oh, and Warp.
-
Nethack is the only RL I play, just for fun not seriously. Just before the Quest NH becomes too hard for me. I wish Dev Team would release new version. You can always hope:)

We can place our bets in "What will come first, Duke Nukem Forever or Nethack 4.0.0?" :P
Anyway, my favourite roguelikes must be Angband (for its simplicity), ADoM (it brings good memories, it was my first RL), DoomRL (it is way too cool, but I cannot play it on 64-bit linux :(), and maybe Crawl (since I've spent may hours in it too).
Incursion is looking really neat, too, I guess it will become a new favourite over time.
Truth is I am not playing roguelikes much nowadays. The university is really killing my free time.
-
I have answered this question in this thread (http://www.roguetemple.com/forums/index.php?topic=4.0), but I can update it.
I hate Angband variants (for its simplicity), but I like ADOM (classic), Crawl (great balance), DoomRL (very well done, although small), IVAN (which somehow seems underrated on the newsgroups, but has many fans on this forum - unfortunately it is incomplete and does not seem to grow). From the old games which are now quite forgotten, I like Ragnarok/Valhalla which was my first, and Mission Thunderbolt which was a quite good commercial roguelike. I did not try Incursion or Dwarf Fortress or other new games yet because I was busy trying to win Crawl again, and now that I won Crawl I have some work to do ;) and I'll try them then.
-
I've never won anything :\
I am Adral's clone university-wise :P
-
I am your clone work-wise ;)
-
Nethack is good for casual playing, I think it's one of the few reasons I like it. You can't really play other roguelikes that way.
-

I am your clone work-wise ;)
We shall put forth a legion of relentless clone workers to conquer the world. The army of They Who Are Too Busy will triumph! :P

There we go, now we've got some personality! But enough talking... there is work to do. *g*
Anyway, as someone said, not in any particular order:
IVAN
Crawl
ADOM
& loads of other less known ones
Also, not entirely roguelikish, Dwarf Fortress and totally unroguelikish, Cortex Command, just recently.
-
We can place our bets in "What will come first, Duke Nukem Forever or Nethack 4.0.0?" :P
haha how true, your talking to a hardcore duke nukem fan rigt now 8)
-
Frozen Depths is my current favorite. It's the roguelike I've spent the most time playing, that's for sure
-
Why not just make a DukeNukum RL?
-
I think that was suggested at chaosforge, along with a wolf3d roguelike
-

Can't imagine what isn't yet suggested. You can make roguelike out of anything. Btw just tried to play Nethack but it's boring. Actually I think I don't like roguelikes... but that just makes me try harder to make Kaduria something better.
-
Yeah, that is a good motivation. Hope to see it soon.
-
Definitely IVAN. Nothin' like beating the crap out of people with your own arm!
Once, I made it out of the first dungeon and into the second town, where I ran out of food and died.
Is it even possible to win? Seriously?
-
When I played, I used to get past the first dungeon at least half the times! Make sure you eat all that Genetix Vesana (or whatever her name is) drops, there's plenty of food in that level. The farthest I've ever went is the second dungeon, a few levels down (damn mines), where there's this guy that just needs to scream and you get hurt. The closer you are, the more hurt you get every time he screams. It's horrible. I once got near him, but died after a scream or two, couldn't slay him.
How do you usually die?
Also, there have been reports of people who did win ;)
-
I generally get past the first dungeon "most" of the time, once you get experience it isn't hard to know what works.
However IVAN is one of those games that the better equipped you are the harder your enemies are. This is very important in the second dungeon, leave those great items behind until you need them to defeat something big.
I struggle to beat the screaming guy, my tactic is to transform into a werewolf and beat the crap out of him, also put health potions in cans so they dont break as easily. However I am no expert at this game, I have gotten as far as the dark frog? level a few times.
There are so many little things that you can do to increase your chances in this game, eventually you will figure most of them out.
-
Yeah, Ivan is definitely up there for me. I would have to say that it is a tie between DoomRL and Ivan actually. I haven't played ADOM in awhile but it does have a special place in my heart because it was the first RL I played. However, Ivan and DoomRL are just crazy, good, masochistic fun. I don't think I have ever died so many times in a game (Ivan) or had much more fun then the original (DoomRL). Dwarf Fortress also gets a special mention, I love the game and the concept but until I get a handle on being able to play it better I can't really justify saying it's my favorite (even though it is pretty damn tempting even without full knowledge of the game). Dwarf Fortress I think will be one of those games that will continue to grow on me until it finally is my favorite.
-
Dwarf Fortress is what I play the most lately. It's amazing how much detail and work Toady One has put into that game.
Ragnarok is the first one I've beaten, and it's always been a favorite of mine.
-
Haven't yet seen one of Kornel's games that I haven't loved. Favorites are DoomRL and Berserk!.
I discovered the genre through NetHack, but I've discovered I don't care for that level of complexity.
-
yeah, I like Kornel's games too, a shame he seems to be away from roguelike development
Who talks, I myself am into other things as well :D
-
My favorites would be Iter Vehemens ad Necem and Ancient Domains of Mystery (I like the first one more though). I just LOVE Ivan's graphics. Dunno why...
My In-Dev roguelike (which is in around the middle of development) even slightly reassembles IVAN... ::)
-
YAY! GO IVAN! :D
Finally, another IVAN supporter! Haven't played for a long time :\
I might try to distribute binaries for linux at some point... the fact that you have to compile (several problems with compiling too) is really not helpful. Kinda like crawl, really.

While you are at it take up IVAN development as well, it needs another release!
-
Hahaha, funny guy ;D
That's a leap I'm definitely not ready to make, from compiling to actually developing other people's source code. Besides, it's great as it is... what would you add? Magic?
-
I'd add some nonsencile skillz, like skateboarding or cycling.
OKOK magic would do, although I'd like it to be a rare skill which not everyone could get, let alone master.
-
Incursion, the game's system works out great.
And the items you can have... e.g. "blessed lawful holy dwarven warhammer +2". ;D
Instant classic IMO.
ADOM is similarly awesome (I have a thing for great and extensive "online help", story and flavor tidbits).
Gotta love IVAN with its doorbanging and bonefile-character-equipment abusing monsters, yup
and the splatter value. ;)
Guess that's my beloved trinity.
-
I would say Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, then IVAN. DoomRL and Rogue are other ones I really enjoy.
-
My chart is:
#1- Adom
#2- Doom RL
#3- IVAN
Adom is my favourite. Lots of race/class combinations (really different to play), lots of secrets in Wasteland style (that is one of Biskup favourite games indeed), hard and challenging.
When I want more action I love to have a quick Doom RL game.
I recently discovered IVAN and it's really cool, too bad it will be probably no more updated or completed.
Some days ago I also started playing Triangle Wizard; the game is still simple but I find the concept (real time action top down roguelike) really cool.
About Angband, I tried the vanilla one but I founded it very boring, it lacks many features compared to Adom. BTW I appreciate the 100% tactical orientation.
Maybe in the future I'll try some variants.
I also really like Spleunky and Cortex Command (not roguelike games).
-
I also really like Spleunky and Cortex Command (not roguelike games).
Spelunky has been determined to be 78% roguelike. (http://www.roguetemple.com/2009/02/01/roguetemples-spotlight-spelunky/)
It's an awesome game, but it's gotten to be too easy to me now, so I have to look for something else.
I'm disappointed that Mage Guild (http://lukos.x10hosting.com/) hasn't been mentioned as anyone's favorite in this thread yet. It really deserves more attention than it's gotten. In my opinion, it is the greatest example of refinement and perfection of the formula the original Rogue created - the formula of short, single dungeon games with no turning back.
-
Good thing!
-
Nethack is what got me to even notice roguelikes in the first place, but I have to say my current favorite is Crawl Stone Soup. It has most of the depth as Nethack, but is a TON easier to move around and control everything. VERY intuitive for this type of game. I know other games are deeper, but DCSS is plenty deep enough for me. Also, I love how religion plays so much of a role in alot of the character types. I think it's the perfect roguelike for me, if there is such a thing. ;)
-
What other games are deeper? I love Crawl because of the depth it has... others seem a little too simplified.
-

Nethack seems a bit deeper since there is more you can do. And while I haven't played them too much, games like Angband and such seem like they are a bit deeper, since there are cities and wilderness areas and such as well as the dungeons.
Crawl seems like it has distilled the multitude of actions and locations of those other games to give the player a similar experience but without all of the minutia of detail that some other games have. I never have that "overwhelmed" feeling playing it, but I have gotten that feeling playing some other roguelikes.
-
Angband misses a whole lot of the things you can do in NetHack. The town in vanilla Angband also doesn't add much. I assume some variants provide more depth, but I'd rate NetHack higher on detail and interactivity.
-
I'd say Elona is probably around the high points of depth of things that mess with other things at this point.

That's another one that I have really wanted to get into, but have been too intimidated to do so. :)
-

You think so? I found it to be incredibly shallow, despite the quantity of features it offers.
-
Well, purely along things messing with other things, world events, etc. The game still has quite a ways to go stability and playability wise---but has made good progress as of late. Doubly so considering the bilingual handicap it has on it that many other Roguelikes to not.
All progressions remaining as they have, I'd like to think Incursion will solidly take the title after another major release or so in another year or so barring the appearance of a Dark Horse on the scene.
Mageguild is pretty awesome though, even with my limited time spent with it awhile back. Definitely one of the ones up there.
-
Mine would have to be ADOM, Spelunky, and DoomRL.
-
it's always been nethack. I've played a lot of adom and dabbled mostly with the *bands, IVAN, dwarf fortress, and crawl (mostly pre-stone soup), but nothing compares to nethack.
It's depressing to think that I've been playing rogue/hack/nethack on and off for over 20 years and have ascended a grand total of... once.
EDIT: wait!! I forgot about Incursion! Incursion blows me away already, and when the final version comes out, it's going to ruin my life.
-
Oh yeah, incursion is awesome. I think it'll be the next big "thing" in roguelikes. I don't play it much yet because it's still a bit too buggy for me. My best character is just kind of stuck because once I get to a certain point in the dungeon it just crashes.
They also make it way too hard to be good on their morality axis. I don't have a problem with good being something harder to attain than evil, but you have to be such a pansy pushover doormat with every single encounter because apparently if you get ambushed by a monster that is purely and inherently evil, it's bad to defend yourself with lethal force.
-
Crawl all day, baby.
I used to tear up some NetHack, but after DCSS everything else pales in comparison. I'm trying to broaden my RL horizons though; I've tried nearly every game available but haven't gotten far into but a handful of them.
-
Crawl, Dwarf Fortress, and Mage Guild are my favorites.
I fallen away from DF as it doesn't have magic, and barely has fire, both of which I love. (I was purely a mage in Fable, and I never play anything but a caster in DnD/Crawl
-
Some great recommendations here, will have to check them out. :)
-
Having some difficulty intalling Incursion. Any tips?
-
What difficulties? Unpack game archive, then run executable.
-
The only executable file I can see asks for something called Visual Studio(??) when I run it.
-
Another title I remember enjoying was 'Prospector', a rare sci-fi variant. I'm not sure if it is still updated.
-

It's possibly Visual Studio Redistributable package. They are just some dynamic libraries the .exe is trying to load. You can get them from Microsoft, but I'm not sure which one to install. I have several of them from 2005 to 2017, they come with Visual Studio also.
-
Thanks for the info.

Prospector does get updates occasionally. They're infrequent, but evidently work is still being done.
-
Thanks for the info. :)

Infra Arcana has become my favorite over the last few years since it's inception. It's the one I go to the most and it just has a great atmosphere to it.
Frozen Depths, Sewerjacks, and Slimy Lich Mummy is of worthy note too.
Though I still enjoy a game of Nethack and Rogue from time to time.
Tome4 gets a few plays now and then.
-
DoomRL is my favorite and I didn't play another ones!
-
At the end of the day mine is IVAN.
It's maybe the only roguelike I regularly return to just to play for fun even though I've already gotten the best ending.
I don't really know what it is about that game that keeps me coming back. It's not very balanced or fair, but it's also one of the least frustrating rougelikes for me.
Part of that is probably the character design process, where you make your guy with just what the dungeon gives you.
I wish more roguelikes would dump the classes in favor of something like this. It actually makes the early-game interesting instead of insufferable.
Since I will end up spending a lot of time in the first few dungeon levels, it really helps to have something so it doesn't feel like I'm just going through the motions.
