Title: New guy
Post by: tseckington on October 06, 2007, 02:20:48 PM
I should have done this when I signed up but hi, I'm new-ish here.

I enjoy playing accessible roguelikes such as Drash, Frozen Depths, and DoomRL. I also apparently enjoy pain and suffering so I enjoy WarpRogue and Crawl. I hated Dwarf Fortress but really like the idea. I play lots of tabletop RPGs and study theatre.

What else you guys want to know?

Hey, hello tseckington

Have you won DrashRL? any suggestions about it are welcome.

Any ideas on how to implement theatre on a roguelike?

Hi there, tseckington, welcome to our cult. Be sure to pray to Rogue at least once a day or the Emperor shall decide you are a mutant and a heretic.

Any ideas on how to implement theatre on a roguelike?

Making a roguelike a real role-playing game, which is not going to happen in the near future, at least until AI is so advanced it can emulate real personalities. And the whole focus of the game is changed, of course. Not much theatre going around in a "KILL KILL KILL USE POTION" environment :P.

Perhaps Roguelikes are a theatre already, a very violent drama in ASCII

I can only imagine "NetHack, the Musical" which would be some strange performance art piece with one man running around onstage singing "Quaff, quaff, quaaaaaff a blue potion..." and he would then do that. Every performance the contents would be different.

In fact the whole idea would only work as an extended improv game. Some performances would take hours on end and others would last 45 seconds before the protagonist was killed by a kobold.

As for Drash...no, I still haven't won...my only suggestion at this point is that there seems to be far more mana fountains than health fountains and that spells and potions aren't very cost effective. Now, I could have a flawed understanding of the game and maybe that's why I haven't won yet.

Hey, not too bad idea! a performance theater in which you just act as you would when adventuring, then people may like it or not :) would need some kind of evaluation depending on your actions and the context (crazy idea, but I think this would work :P)

About fountains, it is just coincidence... they are supposed to have the same chance to appear! as for spells, you need to invest some on your magic skills for them to be effective

Well, I suspect if I keep losing at a roguelike that's lack of experience on my part. The game's mostly pretty good. I would like some sort of choice of equipment package at start though, though that's a matter of personal preference that I can easily dispense with.

yeah, that looks like a good idea. Perhaps something old skool like the Ultima III proffessions.
