Title: [ToME] Just how am I supposed to get in?
Post by: Fenrir on November 26, 2009, 08:57:19 PM
I was traveling down the Barrow-Downs, merrily smashing everything that moved (and some that didn't)  when I came across a most peculiar scene.

The following is a bit spoily, but, since it is just the third level of the Barrow-Downs, I don't think it matters much.

I spied a strange fellow named Wormtongue standing in the doorway of a rather inconspicuous structure. After a short battle with me and casting a few slurs against my mother that I don't care to repeat, he picked my pockets and fled. Inside I discovered a princess trapped behind a wall of glass. Having no tools about me to penetrate the glass or the stone walls, I headed back to the surface and bought a pick, which, to my good fortune, was on sale. After much bother wandering about searching for staircases, I returned, repeated my last encounter with Wormtongue, then promptly discovered that the glass was indestructible and the stone walls permanent. So now here I stand, staring through the glass at a poor unfortunate young lady who I am powerless to assist.

I am usually vehemently against the use of spoilers, but I find this circumstance totally perplexing, and it breaks my heart to leave the lady in such distress. HOW THE HELL AM I SUPPOSED TO GET IN THERE?

I haven't played ToME much, but maybe a scroll of phase door will get you through the walls? It's luck required, but could work. But I'm curious to read what Darkgod did invent for the players there :)

The enclosure is one tile wide, and the princess is standing on that tile. I wonder if a wand of digging would work on the glass, but I don't have the money. I doubt that would work that way, anyhow.

EDIT: Checked the ToME wiki. It seems that I must kill Wormtongue. I was afraid of that; the bastard can just teleport away.
EDIT AGAIN: Not a problem anymore. YASD FTW!

And a natural follow-up question (in absence of a good answer) would be..: why do you want to get into the 1x1 tile chamber ontop of the princess... :o

***SPOILER***

Remember to buy and equip a condom. You don't want to die of aids. :/

Yeah, there's absolutely no way in there.  Glass cannot be broken or bypassed through any means whatsoever.  You have to kill whatever monster the game assigns you.  He should still be somewhere in the same map (this is for future reference, since obviously you died already), so it's really a matter of taking the time to find him.

It's probably best to have persistent levels off, so if it becomes a problem you can just leave and come back and the boss will be back in the newly generated princess room.  As a last resort you can also cast teleport level from a scroll or something to get through to the next floor.

Since this thread already contains spoilers, I may as well talk about the other random quest you get in these situations - the missing sword quests.  You need to kill all the monsters of a certain type, and killing the last one will complete the quest.  The NPC will then offer to join you.  Accepting will net you a permanent companion (until he gets himself killed off, of course), but if you say "no" he will instead offer to permanently improve one of your skills, and if it's a skill you have a learning rate of less than 0.5 in (or a skill you currently cannot learn at all), he'll improve your learning rate for that skill as well.  Taking the skill is definitely what I recommend doing.  That way you can get things like psionic swordmasters or just free skill points in one of your abilities.
