Title: Truespace: Download everything! Immediately!
Post by: getter77 on October 20, 2009, 02:47:03 PM
Right, I'm knocked off my todo list for today as this is too crazy a thing not to get ahold of for the sake of learning and possibly generating stuff for Roguelikes and otherwise in the hereafter---not to mention telling anybody I can.  I highly encourage anybody that ever THINKS they might have interest in graphical/artistic issues and any and all else otherwise raised on the site in the VAST, 24+ hour video tutorial and walkthrough section, to get a hussle on downloading, archiving, and otherwise backing up the content on this site before the entire lot of it vanishes, as literally it could, any day now.  The program and all related to it itself has been made free and utterly non-bound by licensing stuff.

http://www.caligari.com/  It is a Blender like thing.

The BOON of all the knowledge kept within here and unknown to me, and I reckon, most people that could use it is staggering.  If you've got HD space, archival space, whatever....this is almost certainly worthwhile to come after.

Thanks, getter77! I can definitely use this!

Fenrir runs off screaming.

EDIT:

Fenrir runs back screaming.

Wow. The interface on this thing is even more confusing than Blender. I might not use the program, but the knowledge to be gained from it's website is worth it.

Fenrir runs off screaming again.

Pretty much my line of thinking as well.  There's tutorials on here that focus on one subject and last 2-3 hours and have supplementary material!  There's also a SDK release for plugin writing, and a plugin forum that contains who knows what else.  As is there some kind of freaky collarborative server program that a community unofficial forum is messing with while they try and get things squared away for the eventual vanishing of the website.  If you go by the founder's note, it is a wonder the site is still there period at this late a date----let alone giving such amazing download speeds.

Such a crazy treasure trove of assorted bits.

Is everything worth taking, or is some of this specific to the operation of Truespace?

Well, there's 2 videos introing TrueSpace 6 and this last version 7 respectively...as is there one that explains the gist of how they made South Park Reloaded some years back.  Aside from that South Park one...I opted to get everything as even with the subjects showing how things work in TrueSpace, the concepts put out there and explained should hold general wisdom I reckon.  I mean, I know there are Blender tutorial vids out there....but THIS long and topic focused?

Why don't you download and keep backup of it?

^^ That's whay I've spent all day doing, though I lack any elaborate backup solutions.  My main thing was to share  this discovery with others so that they could do the same.  Who knows, something horrible could happen with my stuff and what Fenrir gets could wind up being the only way to come across it again later or some such.  This is the first time I've ever ran into anything like this...so much educational content seemingly primed to disappear on the internet.

I'm spreading the word too; I just informed the folks over at the Rune (http://www.runegame.com) forums. It's a bit obscure, but it's the only place of which I could think. Have you informed the Bay12 crowd yet?

I just did upon that notion within their little creative projects subforum as that looked like about the right place for it.  I also let it be known on RampantGames and NeoGAF, as well as the JCRPG forum as penance for having to play hookey grabbing this all day instead  of working on more voice packs and some sound effects.

All told, MY video haul clocked in at about 3.5GB.  For those still on the fence, bear in mind the videos range from tens of MB up to about 200, plus the syllabi and supplemental bits----so that's quite a lot of content.

Whoa, I'd never heard of this program. I wonder how different it is form blender.

This is kind of old news in the 3D scene. I tried the program when it became free, but was not impressed at all. Blender is doing everything better, even Blender's GUI is quite horrible  (I think they are going to do something about it in 2.5.) The problem with TrueSpace is really that it's a thing from the past and couldn't compete with others, that's why it was made free. But it's not good enough, because Blender exists.

Being a newbie to this community, thanks for posting this valuable resource. Today it still is functional and I'm currently downloading all of it. A very nice find and internet gem for those of us interested in game design and programming.

Thanks!

You are very welcome, that was exactly the plan.

As of 2010, it's still up.

Wondering if any web archives cache entire websites, videos included?

First post, btw. Pretty new to the roguelike scene. Found Nethack on an indie games' website a year ago or so. Played a few other roguelikes as well, including DF. Took a hiatus from them for a while. Tried IVAN again a few days ago, started checking the communities behind roguelikes, hoping for updates to games. Thought I should join the community.

You guys seem like an awesome bunch, so I decided to start here :)

Edit: Oh, and my name? Goes way back, don't ponder on it too much ^^

Welcome Wolfmilf, always glad to see new folk and newcomers in general.

The likes of archive.org is about the most comprehensive site I know of on that front, but even they don't strike me as doing something that hardcore.   Best hope would be somebody with ties/contacts to them to perhaps share the situation then maybe a mass upload and such would happen, hard to say.
