Ok, so I doubt any of you is a fulltime roguedev/player... what else occupies you?
Me, I am a java software developer, I work fulltime on boring stuff such as dynamic websites, business simulations, enterprise systems, etc. I wish I could just leave all this and begin my indie gaming studio :)
I left university some time ago, been doing this since before graduation though...
What about you?
-
I'm currently finishing my 2nd year Computer Science exam season. It sucks, big, big time.
I really like it, but it consumes all of my time, which is a bummer. I have plenty of projects I'd like to get on with, namely, roguelike development (of course).
Aside from that, I'm currently a (lowly) member of the Order of Chivalry of Sacred Portugal. We re-enact as historically accurately as possible an Order of Chivalry from centuries XII to XV, plus a few other epochs. I took a one-year blacksmithing course at HCT's Rural Crafts Center (http://www.hereford-tech.ac.uk/RuralCraftsCentre.htm) in the UK before entering university, and as soon as I get some decent time on my hands, it is my plan to set up a forge and start smithing! Hopefully Portugal will have an infrastructure such as BABA (http://baba.org.uk) and ABANA (http://abana.org) in the future.
Oh, and I also recently got interesting in iron smelting through the bloomery process, so it's also in my plans!
I blame university for not being able to practice any of the things I've mentioned above at a decent rate anymore.
-
I'm a computer programmer. I work on a piece of CAD design software used in the woodworking industry. I'm also currently pursuing an MBA degree, which isn't leaving me as much time to pursue other things as I would like. I would like to go into project management or some sort of tech-related business position when I graduate.
-
I'm unemployed animator, currently working as computer assistant (creating word, excel and power point documents which I don't want to call work, but I guess it is..)
-
I'm a fulltime roguelike programmer; I'm going to college for writing.
-
heh as far as work goes my only contact with computers is setting up peoples internet. Im a cable guy so while you guys are playing with the internet at work im making the internet work at peoples houses.
-
I work for a Christian non-profit gathering donations, setting caseloads, distributing, and oh yes, web stuff!
However, I'm going back to school in the fall of 08 for my Master of Divinity degree.
And on the side, I play with Java, and rogue, or some other various minor programs. A leftover from my days in college as an EE CS dude.
-
fulltime developer, dad, husband, hiker, gardener, mountain biker, shotgunner and roguelike code monkey and homebrew developer!
Occasionally I try and get a couple of hours sleep a day. Maybe pull a couple of vegetables from the garden.
-
I'm a cinema student, majoring in sound design. At the moment I'm working a couple of days a week on the sound effects of a weekly Finnish animation.
-
I'm in my final year doing Geography at university (still don't know what I'm doing when I leave though :o), and in my spare time I play games, and I also make music and stuff (in a variety of genres, it'll all be on my website once I finish it). As well as solo stuff I play in a couple metal bands too, I play guitar in one and keyboard in the other.
-
Graduate student in theatre. I have an assistantship so it's basically a full time gig.
-
At work I get paid to develop software and do system integration, play beach volleyball, play touch, play softball, attempt to play soccer, go to our free gym, and develop and play roguelike games, then I go home ;D
I am also doing my masters, part time of course.
In my spare time I brew beer, watch as much sport as possible, play as much poker as possible and try to fit in time for my wife and kids.
-
Mostly fulltime student, but I do some tutoring on the side. During the summer I work as the webmaster/general computer guy for a small company.

So, what do I have to do in order for you to get me an equivalent job?
-
Mainly student, although I also work at the university as a scholar (don't know if this is the proper translation) with some fairly irrelevant work.
Not exactly "for a living", but I usually go jogging or whatever is called two days a week. One's got to do some exercise, or else I'd be sitting like 28 hours a day :P.
When I have some spare time (lol) I like doing pen and paper RPG adventures with my friends, and playing roguelike or Wii games, and sometimes I like to take my motorcycle and ride away.
-
Im a student. Six months to graduation! BA/BSc in Maths and Compsci
Soon I'm gonna need a job :)
-
I'm a software programmer and tester, mainly for european telecommunication companies (Alcatel, Siemens, O2, T-Systems...).
In my free time, I'm... humm... I don't have any free time :-\
-
I'm a sophomore CS major. I should probably find some sort of job and make some money so I'm not broke all the time, but I enjoy working on my own shit too much :(
-
I work in Local Government (it's a lot more exciting than it sounds, no really it is).
When not working, learning C++ or pipe-dreaming about what I'd like in my ideal Roguelike (and not thinking about how to actually implement that) I like to run, swim, occasionally cycle, lift free-weights, cook, read comics, write bad fiction, paint bad abstract doodleys, spend time with the lady and occasionally sleep and/or breath whilst avoiding housework, washing-up and tidying up after messy cooking/painting.
I have little experience programming outside of my new hobby and only learnt C++ as I wanted a Roguelike of my own.
-
Software developer for a visual effects company. Although, I don't do any visual effects related stuff; I work on much less interesting business systems. Lots and lots of database and web service type tasks.
One of the big reasons to work on crashRun is for the chance to work on something more "computer science-y".
-
Software Engineer writing Call Centre Software (yes, its as boring as it sounds) using Delphi. I used to work for a major Telecomms company writing C and C++ under Solaris, I used the original Kharne to get my current job ;-)
-
I studied german linguistics and literature and since April 2007 I'm trying to find a topic relevant enough to write my Ph.D thesis about which is not as easy as it might sound, because there are many fields I'm interested it. I only know it will have something to do with computer mediated communication, electronic learning and probably (hopefully) intercultural communication. To earn money, I work at university in some projects and as part-time lecturer.
So programming roguelikes is just a hobby, and everybody is shocked to see a humanist write computer games ...

Maybe not so shocking :P Didn't Linley quit working on Dungeon Crawl when he went off to law school?
-
I'm a direct care professional, dealing with people with intellectual disabilities. I've also got a part-time job, and I'm trying to start a business as a professional game designer and writer.
-
I work for my grandfathers Ecotourism biz in Bolivia. Half of the time I am in the jungle but the other half I am trying to teach myself c++ with books and playing roguelikes.
-
@idontexist: Thats cool, may be I should visit Bolivia some time, what interesting places are there? I am not that far :P
-
Like someone else here, I work for the local government...
Errrr, not as "fun" as it sounds, or more fun than it sounds, actually, since I'm an IT support tech at a local school. Which includes supporting in lessons, helping teachers turn on the wireless on their (school provided) laptops (you think I'm kidding?), helping teachers download their emails when they've done something stupid like "work offline" (still not kidding), connecting two ends of a cable to the only two sockets it will fit to in the projector breakout box/laptop and pressing "Fn+F5" like they've been shown many times before(uh-huh... And these people are supposed to be teaching students how to do things? Most of them get there in the end). I'm also the web guru for the school, so if you see our webpage, then that's my fault...
Spare time? People have spare time? If I'm not eating, sleeping, working, playing computer games (currently Titan Quest: Immortal Throne or GTAIV), or developing CR, then I'm spending time with my wife (and I get to do that while I'm eating, sleeping and working as well - did I mention she's a teacher at the same school?). Does any of that sound like it's spare time to you? I always found the phrase "spare time" to be a funny one, if it's spare, you're doing nothing, right?
Oh yeah, and I'm slightly weird/irreverant/comedic... Never said I was good at it though... And I babble...
-
Bolivia has everything from virgen jungles to ancient mountain towns. Really worth visiting if you can handle the greedy government.
We have a property of about 60 mi2 of pure virgen jungle and when we are done building our new camp we will be doing jungle tours animal watching and a live like jungle people experience for people who want to experience that. The land is a registered animal reserve so as soon as we finish getting rid of all the gator poachers it will be a perfect place for tourists.

I'm a catholic seminarian...that is, a future priest.
-
Whoa, seriously? A priest that plays roguelikes, that has the potential of revolutionizing the entire christian world ;)
That is seriously weird though, you get kudos for innovation, I guess :)
-
LOL thanks...as you can guess, my time to spend playing is very limited, but still...I have a geek past :)
-
If you don't mind my asking, what made you turn to priestly life?
-
Long story, but mainly, feeling God's call into it.
-
Well, can't argue with that ;)
-
What is your take on roguelike's gods pantheon?
-
Obviously none...they are all very primitive compared to the God of Jesuschrist ;)
-
We should be grateful the power of God cannot be represented into a computer simulation :)
-
We should be grateful the power of God cannot be represented into a computer simulation :)
Yeah, it would be a real bummer to get all the way through ADOM, enter the Chaos Plane, and get struck down by God snapping his fingers or looking at you funny. That's no good...
Happily, roguelike gods aren't as omnipotent as their name would imply.
-
Why would God want to do that though? he is too busy managing all of his Angels hierachy, right?
-
I'm now unemployed, but it's just making me lazy. All I want to do is sleep and watch dvd's and play with my Wii...
-
We should be grateful the power of God cannot be represented into a computer simulation :)
Obviously you never played Airship 2600.
-

Obviously you never played Airship 2600.
Obviously, you never experienced the power the God ;)
Kindly, Minotaurus (who, for the record, has done neither of the two, and may be over-/underestimating one or both)
-
I forgot to mention. I'm a QA Software Technical Tester
-
As cool as it is, Airship 2600 is just about graphics; where is the playability?
-

How can you say that? Airship had some of the most revolutionary game play ever. Just because it didn't fit with your predefined notion of gaming (before or since) and used a unique control scheme it was the most solid game play ever.
I suppose I can understand, tho. A game that has such remarkably integrated game play as Airship 2600 it's easy to feel like it's playing you at times. Ah, but to be played like that, how can you complain.
-
I found the roguelikish elements pretty interesting (save for the pretty disgusting random plot generator) but if the team had invested more time on content and less on flashy stuff, it would have rocked hard.
-
I work at Target, as a Cashier and Cart Attendant. Blah. Next month, I go back to school for my Master's Degree (in Education, so I can be a High School History teacher). It's a 2 semester program that involves student teaching and taking classes at the same time, so no time for another job really if I want to get ANY sleep. Yay debt, stress, and no free time!
-
I work in IT and am working on a masters in computer science.
Oh and the most revolutionary game play was polybius not airship 2600. But I'm prevented from speaking freely on that game after the incident.
