Title: RLs similar to Sproggiwood?
Post by: Pickles on May 19, 2015, 09:19:56 PM
Hi, are there any other RLs out there that have a nice GUI like Sproggiwood?

Haven't played Sproggiwood. I did notice that it has nice icons/buttonss and spreads the UI across the screen instead of reserving it to one half.

Can you elaborate on what you like and what you're looking for specifically?

I actually picked up Sproggiwood last night. I think the quality of the UI is somewhat derived from the mobile focus. On PC this translates to a really straightforward, if slightly slower, interaction. For example, click on the magnifying glass and then click on any skill, monster, or item to examine it. That's cool. When you get status effects, you get little pill counters denoting how many turns the status last for. I am TOTALLY going to use this. The tutorial is also excellent and you are taught things at a rapid clip.

I don't know of any other RLs with similar UIs. I'd be a bit hesitant to put a similar UI in my game because some people are extremely biased against anything that looks like a mobile port.

Personally I just quietly wait and hope this whole Flash 2.0 GFX/Flat Design/Low Contrast obsession that seems to dominate web design and great chunk of indie gaming nowadays will sooner or later (probably later :/) wither away. The awfulness of it all is just my opinion, but the fact that it makes everything look exactly the same is a more serious and universal charge.

The whole Sproggiwood is designed with a sort of "My First Roguelike" vibe so I suppose it can be kind of excused. I tried to get into it (being a Qud worshipper and all) but nope...can`t stomach it, even though mechanics themselves are not too bad.

Road Not Taken (http://spryfox.com/our-games/road-not-taken/) is a rogue-puzzle-like with similar aesthetic.

Thanks,

I guess what I was asking is if there are any other RLs with animated tilesets/graphics and a point & click interface.

Heh, I checked Sproggiwood and... "It's game designed for kids... Oh, wait, I was playing three hours!" :D

I think Deskto Dungeons (full version, not 0.2 free demo - it's very different, especially in graphics) should you enjoy. Puzzle game with roguelike mechanics/aestethic, with cute (a bit, not too sweet ;) ) graphics.
