Briefly and concisely: NoirRL will be more adventure game than a typically roguelike game; based on old noir movies (like Maltese Falcon), graphics will be classing ASCII (...in X shades of grey).
I'm going to use some code snippets from my older projects (Pythn + libtcod).
More information will be later
UPDATE:
Game is finished.
Gameplay isn't as varied as I wanted, but it is not boring ;)
Due to the time I had to do puzzles easy to implement (verbal riddles and mazes), perhaps expand this idea in the future.
Due to the time2 game isn't well-tested, but I programmed carefully and NoirRL should be most bug-free. If it were otherwise - let me know.
Update:
I made the last pure-7DRL version. Third version of fixes is most bug-free and if you have earlier version I strongly recommend download new version (links are the same).
7DRL last version (fix3):

Update2:
I made first post-7drl version. Graphics changes, menu changes, new options in dialogues, and more.

You had me at "noir."
-
Based on noir movies? Yes! I like the concept.
-
Yeah, I very like noir crime stories. I do not know if I can graphically reproduce noir climate, but I will try. Much easier to do the story in this style.
Actually I have a skeleton of project, + I made a simply "wilderness" (uncomplicated U.S.A map based on http://obliviousat.com/2012/09/28/ascii-computer-map-of-the-us-1978/ ).
Thanx for support :)

“noir” is like blues music, a victim of its own popularity. It’s become a routine, a riff everybody knows and many can imitate.”
I know it`s a 7 day challenge and perhaps no place to discuss what true noir is and pitfalls of simplification but please do try and avoid the tropes - what one writer calls " its Hollywood images of sharp men in fedoras lighting cigarettes for femmes fatales standing in the dark alleys".
Noir is ultimately about tragedy and hopelessness and it has few - or no - heroes. Like another author says "you`re f-cked on page one and things go downhill from there." Shouldn`t be too hard to replicate in a roguelike (now I think about it, it actually sounds like most of my Crawl runs ;)
-
Wow, thank you for you reply, akeley. It inspires me a lot and I see some stereotyped(?) noir-plots 'from another side'.
-
Ok, I am near finish with cities building. Also I devised (not in python, but in terms of ideas - considering fun and possibility of implementation) game mechanics. I don't want to reveal too much, but I can say that the gameplay will be based on logical puzzles.
-
I have less time than I thought I would have. Then I have to adapt the plans to the possibility. Briefly: less content than planned. I think the game will not be bad for it ;) Gameplay's plans unchanged.
I'd liked my idea of NoirRL. After 7drl I will definitely continue to develop the game.
Screenshots soon.

whoa, sweet! I really like this concept and hope it works out. One of the fun things about noirs is they are about the relationships between characters, but I don't know if that is something that you will be able to model with this game or not. Cool to see that you are trying a new setting :)
-
Very stylish and distinctive screenshots. I'm curious to see how this turns out.
As always,

I think that it... may be impossible to do in 7 days. I definitely want to develop this project later, but 7 days is quite restrictive term and I don't want to plan too much content and mechanics. But after 7drl, why not?
Thank you for the kind words, guys :)

Sounds very much like our experience as well. ;D

The new portion of the screenshots. This time: interiors.

One of the police buildings. All of them will be similar (due to time), but not the same.

I just found out that Terry Pratchett died. It's first 'famous' person whose death made me really sad. His books have been an important part of my life. For the rest of his life he had great ideas.
I met him once at a conference in UK. I do not know what was private, in family house, so I do not want to glorify him, but I met him that I had imagined from books and pictures - smiling, warm, slightly crazy elder man.
'Guards! Guards!' is a little 'noirish' novel. For this reason, allow me to dedicate 'NoirRL' to T.P. Rest in peace.
-
I made all necassary interiors (ie police offices), then I start programming puzzles. if I have enough time I will do more building's insides (for example fire brigade, hostipal, etc.).
-
NoirRL is almost finished. I must made last two riddles, end of story and one amendment in mechanics... For two or three hours will be the finish.
-
Game finished, first post updated.

Little update.
During 7drl corrected a few bugs (missing messages, major bug with 'day' letter, some mispellings). The same link.
I worked on tiles for NoirRL today, and I found another bug. I forgot secure the cash before overdraft. Little change, little fix, but because 7drl is finished, I decided to release new version. (https://dl.orangedox.com/o8tRRrZs71sbRoe9iA/noirrl_v.1.rar)

Just make new version. Added new options to dialogues (in verbal riddles, 'Let me think' if you are not sure which respond is correct). Three graphics mode (two - terminal and more-libtcodish courier_new - availible in in-game menu; another, tiles, only by editing config file, because tilemode is in pre-alpha stage and... so serious, only placeholder, don't try this ;) ), logs and flags... and more!
Try here (https://dl.orangedox.com/TRYEIpXX8vspM6qo5Q/noirrl_v2.rar) or on itch.io (http://vedor.itch.io/noirrl)

Need some help with 'how to play' :)
1. very few buildings can be entered, right?
The only buildings I'm able to enter are my home/office and police stations.
2. help says that 't' is talk. But I can't seems to be able to talk to anyone?
should police officers response to me trying to talk to them?
Also after a several attempts to enter building the game (I was tapping '<' and '>' while standing on the door) the game started to lag.
When in police station it lags almost always.

I have the same experience as Xecutor. Tried it for 5-10 minutes, but didn't understand what I was supposed to do.

Me too. I used the phone in my office and received a ransom demand. The game offered me the choice of either trying to find the kidnappers or asking someone for help. I had no idea where to start looking for the kidnappers so I went to the police to ask for help but couldn't talk to anyone. Then I quit.
-
Yup, it's lack of instructions in readme. You must 'a'pply phone ('%' on table in detective home), talk to kodnaper, 'a', call to police, solve riddle, back to home, talk to another policeman, etc. It's true that you may enter only to home and police offices, due to time...
5-10 min and I upload new version (with one minor bugfix)

Xecutor: Thanks for asking instead post Noir in 'Deprioritisation' topic and mark game red :)

I selected 'let me think' and I've got this:

Meeeh, I think I wanted too quickly ake 'Let me think' option. :( Sorry for that and thanks for feedback.
edit: New version; 'Let me think' problem solved. I hope that this was the last major bug...

Maaaan :D I was in hurry this day when I uploaded version 2.2 and I compile version with this predefinied maze, as placeholder. I'm disappointed :D
edit: good version uploaded, link: https://dl.orangedox.com/NNqMpT0IaSuM85vcNP/noirrl_v2.2.rar
-
I got to Nashville! Now I'm starting to figure it out I'm enjoying it more. I don't know how I beat the first mission though. I went to the archive, walked through an empty corridor and apparently succeeded.
-
Good version uploaded. Again. https://dl.orangedox.com/NNqMpT0IaSuM85vcNP/noirrl_v2.2.rar
edit:
@Samildanach - Yup, first 'riddle' is simple maze and you must just go through, from stairs to stairs. In next missions sometimes also are mezes, but are more interesting...
-
It just seemed odd in the context. "Visit the archives to find out where he's hiding." *walks through maze* "You found him!" ...Did I? How? :P
-
It may be... uncleary... But I wanted to make mazes and verbal riddles as metaphor of investigative work. It may be odd - you solved the maze without get/take/find anything and you received cash and essage 'you found him' :) I hope that later cases are not that confusing.
