Post by: Darren Grey on July 02, 2014, 09:56:58 AM
Is there an ignore function anywhere on the forum? Can't find one anywhere.

At your own profile page, modify profile menu, there is buddy/ignore list.

Read only your own messages. That way it's possibly sure that you'll agree with anything you read.

Forum being over run by trash.

Dang it Krice thought you were quitting the forum for awhile. Why you gotta tease me?!

I did... for couple of days... I think if I can keep myself strictly on roguelike topic then it's not that bad.

I think ignoring entire threads is the way to go.

I have recently wanted the ability to ignore threads.  A quick search of the website didn't find it; a quick search of simple machines forum support however, did.

http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1193

Please install this.

I have cousins and nieces and nephews with whom I was once close, whom I have lost to identity politics, nationalism, religious intolerance, etc, and they now consider me, with sadness, to be everything from "outlander" to "hellbound" just as I sadly consider them to be everything from "bigoted" to "well-meaning but mistaken" to "believing big fat lies."  We still love and respect one another on a personal level.  But trust in one another is gone, and we cannot remain in contact because none of us wants to bring the others into contact with friends whom those others will offend and disrespect.  And it hurts.

I process these issues enough in 3d with people who are part of my own family.  I do not want to read nationalist, religious, or racist debate here, especially where personal love and respect for those with whom we disagree is not strongly in evidence.  Seeing such a topic come up, I want to hit an "Ignore this thread" button and forget that it exists.

Please allow me to do that.

Why not just ban the only person who persists in talking about this crap? That's a solution that works not just for people with accounts, but everyone who reads.

Then leave internet. It's for the people. We have opinions about things and we can discuss about them without attacks on a person.

That's what Hitler thought about jews: hey, why not destroy jews, they are the only lesser people around here.

Yeah, banning someone for constant obnoxious bigotry is pretty much the same thing as the Holocaust. This has been another apt comparison by Krice, etc.

He's talking about Hitler's thoughts, not about Holocaust.

Do you realize how long I was gone from this forum?

Do you realize why?

I don't follow what other people do. I don't have time for that. If internet is making you hurt all the time then it's not the right place for you. I really believe it helps to realize that there are people with different opinions about things. It's no big deal after all.

I'm frankly amazed this discussion is even happening again. Didn't the moderators pretty much commit to slapping down anyone trying to bring this kind of crap into the forums in early June? And yet here we are listening to Krice saying it's everyone else's fault for connecting to the internet (and comparing the persecution he feels to that of central European Jewery at the hands of Nazi Germany, no less).

Everyone knows there's sad sacks out there who think like you, Krice. It's not that they want to pretend that you don't exist. They just don't want it shoved in their face in a venue where it obviously doesn't belong.

Well I'm just fooling you, but I think it's still important that people can discuss about everything. The world and people seem to be falling into ignorance again when facts are replaced by beliefs and simply ignoring the whole matter. It wouldn't be the first time.

You don't accept that the responsibility falls on more than just Krice?  If people ignored these posts and never responded, and never built up the drama around them, do you think they would even matter?  Do you think they would continue to get posted?  People want to have their cake and to eat it to.  They want to be able to make something big out of the things which aren't worthy of being paid attention to, then to put all the drama on Krice.

But let's be honest.  There are always people getting offended here.  I can think of several over the last couple of months.  They come in, share some ideas, then when their ideas are not accepted as being good ones, they get offended, throw a tantrum and say they're leaving.  I'm pretty sure the "I don't like permadeath therefore it's bad" guy did one of these.  Or you get the people who get offended on other people's behalf, saying things like "these kinds of discussions are why X left the forums".  Amy Wang or something is a name that I've seen bandied about.

No-one is stopping you discussing these things - you can discuss them on a forum more appropriate.   Maybe google "neo nazi" and "men's rights" or whatever your non-roguelike topic you want some discussion on will get you there.

Regardless of Krice's nonsense, most of the "discussion" is you posting hyperbole and making drama.  Stop responding.  If you do respond, respond to the people who respond to Krice's nonsense warning them in a non-dramatic way, that they shouldn't respond to Krice's nonsense.  Everyone ignores Krice's nonsense.  No drama is made.  It no longer seems a big deal.

I think it's easy for white Anglosphere dudes like you and me to look at this and say no big deal, I know idiots in real life who think this kind of stuff and it doesn't really have any impact on me here or there. Not everyone's like that though.

You know, I've seen forums where they throw kind of crap out and forums where they let it fester. The ones where they throw it out work. The ones where they don't, don't.

If people can't handle disagreement or criticism re: matters pertaining to roguelike games, that seems very different to me than what's being discussed in this thread.

We should take people at their word when they say they're offended about matters about which people are widely known to get offended. It's not manipulative for someone to say they don't want to deal with discussion about the oppression of male members of dominant ethnic groups in their countries of residence when it's off-topic garbage anyway.

I'm tentatively eyeballing the topic here in general, in the hopes that whatever of this bizarre acridness can get let/bled out to an understanding between all parties localized entirely within this specific context here as I'd thought the last topic made it clear enough that this is to be a place of good-spirited debate, enjoyment, and reflection on the Roguelikin' world.

Roguelikes are the key thing here, whereas once there was an Off Topic section---that's no longer a thing.

There's still an off-topic section. ??? It's a couple of sub-forums below this one.

Odder still, not on my Index page that lists them all out in big groups.    ???

Perhaps I've been banned from it somehow.
