Title: Sucker - anyone able to run it? Is the dev here?
Post by: Samildanach on March 19, 2014, 01:17:26 PM
I've been trying to play Sucker (http://7drl.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/sucker-7drl-version.zip) for the 7DRL reviews but I can't get it to run. I reached out to the developer with no response to date. Is anyone else having this problem? Better yet, has anyone had this problem and solved it?

I don't want to give up too easily, but also don't want to waste too much time on it.

Worked for me. What's been your issue?

Drivers etc are up to date. I've re-downloaded the game and tried it on four different rigs. Same message every time.

People got the same error in my 7DRL when I tried to distribute dll files with the game. Apparently some microsoft DLLs only work of they're in the system folder, not the game folder. You'll need to find out which DLLs it needs and install them, same as in my game. Hopefully there's a link in the readme?

Edit: I checked the author's blog (http://7drl.org/2014/03/16/sucker-sucksess/) and it's pretty clear which one you need, it's the same one as you need for Poachers Will Be Decapitated! http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=40784 (x86-32 bit version) (http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=40784). You do need that file. It's far from "unknown" as you called it. ;P

Already got it because of Poachers, so it's not that.

Well, that's strange. I just tried it, and it's running fine. I'll keep an eye out for Graspee on IRC.

After a flurry of emails with graspee it turned out that the problem was AVG. I use AVG Free Edition as my antivirus and it prevents Sucker running (possibly by blocking the Microsoft Visual Studio 2013 redistributable, though it doesn't do that for Poachers Will Be Decapitated). I can't speak to the effects of a paid version, but AVG Free hates Sucker.
