And so it begins...
A little functionality request, Slash - could the order of games be randomised each time you load the page? Would help different games get more visibility as people revisit the site.
-
Maybe Slash just wanted to give visibility to his own 7DRL? ;) A very good idea about randomizing the default order.
The first thing I do when looking at this page is to remove the pagination...
-
I remove the pagination too, but I understand why it's there... Having a larger number of entries per page would help with general navigation though, as well as with increasing the visibility of many of the buried games.
-
After extensive discussion of this on #rgrd, my conclusion is that I'm okay with staying #2 on the front page and no randomization is needed.
-
I will have to concur with Eben. As I too am on the front page. :P
-
I like being on the front page too, but I think the people on later pages have done nothing wrong to deserve the lack of exposure that comes with registering after the first 15 challengers. The initial view should be randomly chosen to remove the motivation for over-eager participants to register as quickly as possible in the hope of a spot on the first page.
-
Calling me over-eager is an understatement. ;)
-
I guess that's one way to read it. It was self-deprecating too.
-
The problem with randomizing it is that it might make navigation confusing for people going thru the games and coming back to the page. Might make more sense to let the rng give a random ordering attribute to entries on registration (but then someone could cheat by rerolling his character until it shows up in the first page)
-
Someone or other on IRC suggested using it based on a client side attribute (e.g. a cookie or a hash of some information about the user's browser). This would mean that everyone who views the page would get a different order, but the order would be consistent between visits (at least until the cookie expires or the user switches browsers).
-
That sounds doable, was also thinking on a button for "submission date order" and show it randomly by default.
-
Should also add a "short description" field, along with a popup window where the long description can be seen. (Or just limit the description to twitter or 2x twitter length)
-
I already suggested this over in its own thread in another subforum, but in case you weren't paying attention to that forum, a search feature would be nice :)
-
A 2-300 char limit on descriptions would definitely be good!
-
edit: nevermind.
-
Slash, I forgot my password and when I click the "I'm a noob, I forgot my password" link, it says it sent an email but I never got one. I probably mistyped my email or something. Can you change the email or remove Dice Mines by Trystan Spangler so I can re add it correctly?

There's something weird with the email server, please mail me a new password and I'll set it up. slash at slashware dot net
