Title: Suggestions on what to play next?
Post by: MeowMeow_Prince on February 05, 2014, 05:48:52 AM
I have recently got into playing Rl's namely Brogue and dwarf fortress (witch isn't really a rl but I digress),
I was hoping that i could get help finding a new Rl that is:
is a bit more complex in building and mechanics than Brogue.
I also very much like Oryx tiles.

help would be much appreciated The Prince of Cats Meowmeow_Prince

Nothing out-Brogues Brogue, but if you like it you might also like Sil.  It's very tight and tactical like Brogue, but your character building and equipment options are more complex.

A lot of people also like the bigger, more RPGish games like ADOM.  They aren't as tactical or balanced as Brogue and Sil,

E:

but you might enjoy them anyway.

Not sure how I managed to forget that last bit.

Mh, you might try unBrogue (a variant of Brogue, which adds loads of new items and changes some mechanics).
Follow this link (http://"http://brogue.createforumhosting.com/1st-weekly-unbrogue-seed-872075927-t893.html#p13008") and you can get the most recent version (release candidate 1 for version 1.17, instead of the older versions you can find on its webpage).
The only problems are that a) it's not being actively developed anymore, b) it's not completely stable and c) it's based on an older version of Brogue (1.6.4 IIRC).

You might also try Infra Arcana (http://"http://infraarcana.wikispaces.com/").
It uses anoter set of Oryx's tiles, has a Lovercraftian theme and it's bastard hard (no reported wins, IIRC).

People have won it. Although the difficulty have varied a lot between different versions. And each version has its own particular exploits and imbalances which are no longer applicable :)

IA is the first roguelike to use his tiles.

Infra Arcana is a solid recommendation.

@NON
Alright, didn't know that about IA.

Also, I'll second Sil as a recommendation.

My personal favorites (that may not quite fit into what you mentioned, but still good):

Rogue. (the gand daddy that is still good. I reccomend donnie Russels's port. And maybe MAGS while you're at it.

Frozen Depths: Just plain good.

Infra Arcana: very good RL that combines a great theme with great mechanics and atmosphere.

Maybe Slimmy Lich Mummy. Great game with good asthetics and simple, but good gameplay.

There are so many, I have a problem with just dabbling in them all.

Infra and Slimy are great. So are the monster games ToME4 and Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup.

Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup was one of the Roguelikes I particularly enjoyed.
