Title: 2013 Roguelike Activity Survey
Post by: Slash on January 30, 2014, 09:56:13 PM
Hello all!

It's time to measure the activity of the roguelike players community for 2013!

Players: If you actively played a roguelike (4+ hours) and you don't see it in the list, you can suggest it *here* . A link to an existing player community will help your nominate to be included directly into the list.

Developers: This is not a popularity contest - No prizes will be awarded (not even a virtual medal) so, dear developer, DO NOT make great efforts for your game to "win". Let the players talk for themselves. :) (This doesn't mean you can't direct your players to this survey, but please refrain from using other methods to increase your "votes")

Take a look and thank you for your time!

Done, though it includes no mobile games other than Powder. I'm not sure there are any mobile roguelikes I play more than 4 hours / month (cause lengthy playtime is the opposite of what they're about) but they certainly are on the increase in my play portfolio.

Speaking of mobile roguelikes, could you add Hyperrogue? I've played that one quite a bit this year. I'm not sure about spending 1/200 of 2013 on it, but that seems like an arbitrary cutoff.

Added Hyperrogue based on the quantity of ratings and facebook likes

Also, if you could spread the info about the survey on the different roguelike communities, that'd be useful!

Thank you to all 18 who have answered so far... but we need MOAR participants!!!

This survey is mean to let us know, as of 2013, which are the REAL major roguelikes, apart from historic / personas bias.

I ask your help to please spread the word about this with all your fellow roguelike players!

I voted but would have included Incursion if it was an option!

Is there evidence of an active community of players around Incursion? I just looked up their website and it seems quite abandoned.

"Most" Incursion players maintain a candlelight vigil within the GoogleGroup page for the game---though many scattered to the winds in the wake of the final announcement that it was all likely never to see a proper update again.

Could you add Caves of Qud and unBrogue to the list?

I would say that there are a fair few players around but theres definitely not an organised community.

There are many games which I played a lot in 2013 (yup, may be +4h/month) and they are not on the list.
- DiabloRL
- ToME 2.3.5
- hengband
- Frozen Depths
- Omega
- Prime

But I'm not sure if all of them should be added ;)

Pending:
- ToME 2.3.5: Is there a community around this apart from Tome4?
- unBrogue: Is this popular?

-unBrogue's updates shadow Brogue's updates on a delayed basis over on ASCII Dreams as the project that seems to have summoned him away from unAngband indefinitely---I understand them to be well received by the Brogue folks in general and the next update or so is supposed to be rather substantial to reclaim pace with Brogue proper.

But if it came down to focus, Brogue is certainly moreso in the spotlight.

-With the old sites long gone, there's no community for Tome 2.3.5 beyond folks scattered about and the one-some people trying to remake it in T-Engine 4 slowly these past several months.  Sort of like how there's almost certainly more nLarn players than Larn ones---but without fresh dev activity it shrivels.

I would have asked for IVAN to be included, but I didn't play it much last year.

Don't know, isn't the point of this poll to find out?

-unBrogue's updates shadow Brogue's updates on a delayed basis over on ASCII Dreams as the project that seems to have summoned him away from unAngband indefinitely---I understand them to be well received by the Brogue folks in general and the next update or so is supposed to be rather substantial to reclaim pace with Brogue proper.
Do you know for sure or are you speculating? Because my understanding was that unBrogue had been abandoned (and what a pity that is).

UnBrogue's fate is a presumption beget of not knowing about Doull specifically stating as much to the contrary on his blog---last update for it mentioned that it would be a fair bit of extra work/extra time until the next update in turn compared to the one's up to then as per my recollection.  Was there some update on the Brogue forums that I missed? Whereas UnAngband has had only utter silence on the blog for a looong time now.   :-\

What exactly does it mean to play a roguelike "4+ hours / month" in 2013? One interpretation is "48+ hours in 2013", and another one is "there was a month in 2013 where I played it 4+ hours".

Changed the hours thing.

Hm, I don't know. I don't play often in Tome4, but in the 2.3.5 often.

Hi there! I just signed up to ask whether or not The Binding of Isaac should be added to this list! It seems like it would fit in fine, given the variety of titles already in the poll.

We'll subclassify the titles later on.  Hardcore roguelike jihadists stay calm ;)

Please add The Slimy Lichmummy. Rarely updated but one of my favorites. Since PRIME was added and it has maybe 20 players around the world TSL fits too.

Ancient there are a couple of games like that. Great games IMO but an unfairly low amount of players.

713 players have participated in the Survey! we are close to our 1000 players goal :)

I'm sure if we post this at something awful, we'll get an awful quantity of votes. :/

Would have been nice to see Slimy Lichmummy on the list since it was one of my often played rl's.
