Does this mean ~13 hours of gameplay? Pure "dive" or more of an exploration approach?
I`m not actually playing Crawl "to win" yet, but I`m curious anyway.
Also wondering if people mostly "build" characters or randomize? How probable is it to ascend with just randomizing?

Yeah it took 13 hours. That's way too long and part of why I don't think I'm gonna play Crawl anymore. idk what you mean by pure dive versus exploration. I was playing to win, but I had never seen the last 1/3 of the game before, so there was a lot of learning as I went too. I had a build in mind, but it was pretty basic. Just worship Vehumet -> get sticky flame -> get fireball -> get firestorm and make sure my defenses were good enough the whole way through.
I think the game should be beatable with a fairly randomized build. The hardest parts are the beginning and the very end. The middle is actually pretty easy and boring. At the start of they game your character doesn't have many options and the RNG's influence is at its strongest. At the end of the game you have to contend with fire orbs (make sure you have a plan to deal with fire orbs) and survive the final orb run back to the surface. Other than that the game doesn't give you anything too nasty as long as you take it slow and avoid the harder optional areas.

I recently beat Dragon Warrior for the first time...it took 13 hours so I was reminded of that. Did it without dying, of course. Since that's not a game build for death I had to play in a VERY grindy way.
Also I'm talking old school NES version not the newfangled XP boosted version.
It's not an RL, but the randomness of the encounters means you have to be prepped for anything.
I also recently beat Spelunky XBox with my brother. That was pretty cool.

idk what you mean by pure dive versus exploration.
I don`t really know myself, think I read somewhere about people going down as soon as staircase is found, instead of exploring, and this being an effective gameplay style. Isn`t that called "power diving", or some such?

Ohh I might know what you mean. Some people rush a few levels quickly to reach the ecumenical temple because you can gain more piety if you start worshiping at a lower level. I didn't bother because Vehumet already offers fire storm well before I can make use of it.

I just ascended in Brogue with a super lucky run. The easiest way to win seems to be to enchant a broadsword and some plate armor so you can use them ASAP and let them carry you through the game.
