Title: Your choice of rogueliking soundtrack
Post by: Samildanach on September 15, 2013, 12:38:29 AM
So many roguelikes operate in total silence, particularly the ASCII ones, that I find I often put on a bit of music to soothe my weary questing path. I can't be alone in that. So what do you like to listen to when the dungeon calls?

Personally I favour vaguely setting-appropriate things. For Infra Arcana I use the Eternal Darkness soundtrack. For fantasy/medieval ones it's usually either Oblivion or a load of stuff I found under 'medieval' on Grooveshark (such as this (http://grooveshark.com/#!/s/Clara/CaPEk?src=5) or this (http://grooveshark.com/#!/s/Glut+In+Euren+Augen/3R3J3b?src=5)).

Anyone else?

Yeah, I go with setting-appropriate stuff too. Dark ambient for horror, Lovecraftian, etc.

Radio Rivendell (http://www.radiorivendell.com) is great for most fantasy games.

(for coding, I favor genres that make a state of flow easier to achieve, like Goa trance (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2IrVl5Xuhc&list=PLD8A1C642729ADD7D))

Thief series have a powerful ambient soundtrack.

I like the silent style, it allows for imagination takeover. But sure, sometimes I like to put something on, it allows me to catch up with my huge music backlog. I find older jazz or ambient techno most fitting.

Bizarrely, at the moment I`m playing Zagadka and listening to Manchester derby live. Some mix  ::)

Dungeon Keeper soundtrack is the best I've ever heard.

Diablo is pretty close, at least the village tune.

I've recently found that the soundtracks from Zulu and the old Castlevania games work pretty well as roguelike accompaniments.

This is why I always include music now in my games (all ascii-ish so far). Although it does make the bundle size quite a bit better, especially with music for different areas.

When I'm playing games without music I typically listen to whatever's new on soundcloud, which for me is EDM, mash-ups, and chap hop

chap hop
I'd never heard of that before, but now I can't stop listening to Professor Elemental. Next time I play a roguelike I must put on my fighting trousers.
