Title: My current top five roguelikes
Post by: guest509 on August 22, 2013, 01:30:31 AM
I love me some roguelikes, after my 7DRL burnout and venture into Terraria I am back playing some roguelikes again.

These have been my top 5 for some time, they are in no particular order.

1. Brogue
2. Random Realms (just got a new release!)
3. Infra Arcana (Another recent release)
4. Aliens
5. Demon Hunt (the design is just so tight)

Honorable Mention: Early Rogue/Hack releases.

What's in your top 5?

I'm boring, so:

1- DCSS
2- DoomRL
3- Nethack
4- Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer
5- ADOM

Ah, the classics. I dig it. These monster huge games are great. I've tried to get Shiren going on my SNES Emulator a billion times, but to no success.

Doom is good, but I like the stripped down and scary version (AliensRL).

When the new updated ADOM comes out I'll definitely be getting it.

I like DCSS as well, I've played it tile a bunch of times. Never got too far. I started with an early Hack version, where you could choose class but not race. Nethack just overwhelms me. I like a quick fix from my video games anymore.

Another Random Realms vote. Nice!

I have to admit to never having played NPPAngband or Incursion.  :-\

Hey Jo, I tried Infra Arcana since it was in your list because you seem like a dude who knows what's up.  And you're totally right, it owns.

Anyway, my favorites are:

Ragnarok
Mage Guild
Brogue
PrincessRL

I dunno what I'd put as my fifth.

Man I've never played Ragnarok either!

Infra Arcana, along with Brogue, are 2 games I not only enjoy because of the design but also just how well they come together. Polished and balanced. Random Realms, Aliens and Demon hunt have great mechanics I really enjoy but they maybe don't come together quite like Brogue and Infra.

1. Unnethack
2. Forays into Norrendrin

In no particular order;

-Forays into Norrendrin
-The Slimy Lichmummy
-Infra Arcana
-Sword in Hand
-PrincessRL

Been really focused on compact games lately :/  (Shout out to Rogue!)
Might have to give Demon Hunt a try with all the gushing that's been going on...

Holesty I'd say by looking at your choices that Demon would be up your alley.

I've never played Norrendrin...

This thread is making me realize I need to try all these games (or retry, in the case of Infra Arcana, Sil, DCSS, and AliensRL).

My current list is Brogue, DoomRL, ADOM, ToME 2 (specifically 2.3.5), and Alphaman (a classic!), in no particular order.
(also, I've gotta finish this next big update of Forays. Soon!)

You are the Norrendrin dev?

Yes...quit playing and start coding. I've not played but I keep hearing about it. I'm not the end all and be all of RL news, but amongst future 'major' candidates you and SIL are being talked about.

I really should try Alphaman. I realize there are just so many great games out there.

Infra Arcana I recommend to anyone. Newbs, Coffee Breakers and Epics alike. AliensRL takes a bit of love for the source material, a certain association of fear and adrenaline for the sounds. Watch Aliens, then play the game. I've seen Aliens dozens of times. In fact I'm putting it on right now and going to play the game. Demon is great for the underlying stat design. It's very tight and very balsy.

Brogue I rec because it's the best game going right now, very mature. It's almost progressed in complexity beyond what i like. It should be included in any 'classic' or 'major roguelike' discussion.

Then there's my flawed friend Random Realms. The design decisions in this game are a must see for any developer.

Man I've never played Ragnarok either!

Ragnarok is kind of like Morrowind where it's massively unbalanced, and the game is largely about seizing control of the imbalance and forcing it to work in your favor.  If you like that kind of thing you will like Ragnarok.

I'll get right back to coding in a minute, but first I'll talk about Alphaman. You probably need dosbox to run it, but it's worth the trouble. I realized (years after I first played it) that it does a lot of things right: Berries are like potions (some can be thrown), with the added feature of berry aging - they gradually change color from red to purple, with the effect getting stronger toward purple. Red stat berries permanently reduce your capabilities, while purple ones are permanent boosts, but a purple acidic berry can do quite a lot of damage if you eat it. It makes the berry ID game pretty interesting.

Then, you have the tech devices. Since the setting is post-apocalyptic, that gun-shaped device might be a laser blaster, or a hair dryer. You can generally try repeatedly to figure these out, with a chance of the item being activated, and a smaller chance of it breaking.

Each character starts with a physical and a mental mutation, and they're fun to play around with. I'll admit to start-scumming quite a few times in this game. (I've just realized that a lot of this information is on the RB page: http://roguebasin.roguelikedevelopment.org/index.php?title=Alphaman . There's also a wiki, incomplete but still useful: http://alphaman.wikia.com/wiki/Alphaman_Wiki )

The UI was ahead of its time, I think. Inventory, character info, world map, known items, etc., each get their own screen accessed with F1 through ~F5. Overall it's pretty sensible.

And then there's the humor: tech devices like lava lamps and answering machines (in addition to phasers and chainsaws), and mutant enemies like prairie chickens and gazelles that fire lasers. The first part of your mission has you find Elvis while fighting off Elvis impersonators.

It has multiple difficulty levels. Normal mode is quite difficult(I've never beaten it legitimately), so I think I'd recommend starting lower. Good luck. I'll get back to coding now.

Although I've played a reasonable number of roguelikes I'm still a novice. My current top 5 would be:

DoomRL
AliensRL
Infra Arcana
Caves of Qud
Warlock of Firetop Mountain

The last one there is mainly nostalgia. I was a big gamebook reader back in the day and still have something of a collection. It's not a bad game but pretty vanilla. Less clunky interface than some, though. I find it good for a quick blast if I have half an hour to spare.

Honourable mentions go to Random Realms, Rogue's Souls and Frozen Depths.

Oh dude I forgot about Caves of Qud.  I'm adding it as the fifth entry in my list.

Ragnarok
Mage Guild
Brogue
PrincessRL
Caves of Qud

Caves of Qud huh? I think there was a Roguelike Radio on that recently. Going to have to check it out.

I haven't really gotten around to playing a lot lately, so I'm not up for compiling a list of current top 5, but yes! Caves of Qud is a bizarroid masterpiece, rich on tactics, setting and overall feel. Play as a four-armed porcupine man quadruple-wielding carbide kukris (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kukri), or why not a telepathic centaur gunfighter with an evil twin? Once you've gotten a feel for the basics, try to choose as many "unstable genome" mutations you can bear to max out on the weirdness.

As always,
Minotauros

Glad to hear it, comrade, hope you won't regret doing so :) A final hint, by the way – to be taken with a grain a salt, as I haven't gotten very far (beat the first Golgatha mission a couple of times; my highest score so far is 28885, killed by Namon Souldrinker) – to get started, playing as a True man is actually not a bad idea. That lets you focus on and get to know the skill trees, and building a good mutant character can be a bit daunting at first, even though they're great fun and can start out with "panic button"-like mutations such as Teleportation and Quills. Also, learn how to shop lift in Joppa to start with an extra edge. Begin with the empty houses, do Argyve for an intermediate challange, and advance to Tam and Elder Irudad to become an official member of the thieves guild ;)

As always,
Minotauros

I agree on starting with a True Man. People told me to always play as a mutant but I think it's best to keep it simple as you learn how the game works. Mutations can be quite complicated.

Stealing from Joppa hadn't even occurred to me!

1. Incursion             classic, tactical, rich and nice in-game docu/flavour (texts) [monsters, items, gods]
2. UnReal World   unique and lovely setting/world, tiles only, strong points: free-form, crafting, focus on plain survival/living, interesting things can emerge
3. Cataclysm DDA  sweet world-gen, free-form, crafting, driving cars/trucks/bikes, going shopping with shopping carts, lots of stuff here (mutations, cybernetic modules), if you want to tone down on it a bit, there's 'classic zombie mode'
4. Slaves to Armok II (not to emphasize the f in df which is done more than enough) free-form, lovely world-gen, emergent behaviour possible
5. GearHead Arena  free-form possible, never advanced the story much myself (no permadeath and fast shop restocking with new items make baby jesus cry), gotta love mecha combat

ADOM, DCSS       classic, next best choices after Incursion
IVAN   fun (gotta be a bit maso here), but truely a "violent road to death" as is its name, tiles only
