Title: Game Idea Folder
Post by: guest509 on June 09, 2013, 06:51:41 AM
Anyone got something like this in their hard-drive? That's just my video game idea folder...my boardgame folder is double that, but the ideas are not very interesting. My book idea folder is also about this size.

Has it.

Zelda is not a Zelda clone, but Zelda-ish idea. These are actually good ideas and some of them are going to be implemented sooner or later.

Crom Design? Like Conan's god? Dig it!

It's a non-Conan related acronym following the style of ADOM.

So very, very much. I tend to do heavy design-work before implementing things, which is why I always keep a folder overflowing with ideas on my desktop. And a small notebook which I use when I'm somewhere without my laptop.

I keep a few text files of game design notes lying around, and one kind of diary-like text file about real life stuff.

I've an unimpressive total of five projects in my RL folder, but to make up for it, I write and collect tons of trash thinking about possible designs ...

In addition to four notebooks and a bunch of loose papers.

As always,

I have many ideas and half-baked designs strewn about in various places (google docs, dropbox, paper notebooks). I never get around to sorting them out.

Do you ever start to write an idea down, but then get distracted and forget what it was?

Today I noticed that I had left one of my txt files open, and the most recent entry said:

"What about syn"

and nothing more.  Syn what?  What is syn?  Syn...chronize?  Synovial fluid?

What was I going to say?

What was I going to say?

I knew I wasn't the only one who did this.

40% of the things in my Projects folder are half finished.
40% of the things in my Projects folder are half started.

And I've got a few google docs full of ideas.
And a few pages of notes on my iPhone.
And a dozen half-remembered things in my head.

Same here! Nowadays I mostly use google docs and the notes app on my phone.

I have a text file that I write down all of my ideas into. It's easily over 1000 by now. I've kept it going for years. Here's a small random copypasta from it:

- Spaceship/FPS where you mine/steal stuff from various asteroids/abandoned bases (maybe to upgrade your ship?)
- Mage game: whole game is spell casting instead of melee. (maybe w/ wands? Include wands?)
- Game takes place in caverns: 2x heightmaps ontop of each other
- Game in which you glide between platforms avoiding obstacles to reach some goal.
- Buy+Combine supplies to make stuff to sell in your store.
- Grave robber: dig graves, rob tombs for treasure
- Build a base to survive a constant onslaught of zombies
- Salvage: Need oxigen to survive on broken space stations/ships to collect junk to upgrade your stuff. Start projects at base which take a specific amount of time.
- Ninja/tenchu game: Tile based (free movement? Seek mouse?). Anyone who sees you attacks you, otherwise you just have to assasinate someone. Hide in stuff, behind stuff, etc. Enemy visibility is always shown for whole map.

99% of these ideas never make it past the idea stage.

Nice Elig. I have a few of those  as well, quick takes on possible smallish games.

I just started one to keep track of projects I'm thinking of actually doing someday, that are very interesting to me...

It's getting to be more and more about strategy games nowadays though, rather than RL's. I think it's important to branch out.
