How deep have you been into spelunky? I have reached level 7

I've managed to put a shortcut to the ice levels. Damn, they're hard!!!  ;D

To the bottom. So far, in 6 minutes and 14 seconds (in 0.99.5).

Wow that's impressive. Love to see a video of a run that fast. I've completed it, but only from the last shortcut.

I second that! Some ice level tactics would sure come in handy ;) I haven't played in quite some time :(

Incidentally, is anyone else registered at TIGsource? I know Slashie is :)

My best time for completing the game is about 8 minutes.  I did it pretty quickly from the ice stage shortcut once, but that doesn't really count.

I have made it to the ice levels only a couple of times and I die quickly.

Incidentally, is anyone else registered at TIGsource? I know Slashie is :)

Long time lurker, never posted. Maybe if I created a decent game...

Yeah, it's so easy to die in the ice levels! Stupid yetis! And UFO's! And ice! And endless pits everywhere!:P

I'm guessing you need a bunch o' ropes for that level!

Anyway, you can learn bunches in TIGsource. I usually haunt the Technical forum. It's also great to provide feedback to other people :)

Woohoo got all the way to the end level, and died in two seconds, I didnt even see what it was all about. Plus I didn't even make the highscore, wasted all my money on Damsels. Now doesn't that sound familiar :).

How is it possible to die in two seconds on the end level?

I started playing this game last week (bouncing between this, Incursion, Stone Soup, and brushing up on my C++ skills) and I like it a lot so far. It has the quick, pick-up-and-play addictiveness of DoomRL. Haven't gotten past the jungle. Haven't even gotten the first shortcut constructed (blast you, dart traps!).

I assume it is the last level, anyway after the cut scene  I got hit by a jumping man.  I have made a few time since using the  last short cut but I still die quickley.

Edit:
Ok the last level is quite easy:) Yay!  Now I just have to get through from the start.

And he took all of your hard-earned kisses at once? Yes, these guys and yetis sometimes do that... ( I think the jumping man starts jumping after more than 2 seconds, and you can't get crushed too quickly either, that's why I wondered)

I just got to the ice levels and made a great parachute fall on the endless pit. ..

Many many deaths down there.

I have decided that speed runs get me the furtherest.  Made it to the 13th level in a few minutes.  OF course you dont end up with enough resources or health doing that.

No depth at all yet since I've not time to play!

However, a new version of the game came out the other day 99.8 I think...supposed to fix up lots of stuff so perhaps the latest version will grant more folks victory!   8)

Heheheh, the game's damn hard with or without bugs. I can't say I've encountered a lot of them. One annoying thing is how it keeps save information in the registry, so I can't share information between Linux and Windows. Aaaand, as if that wasn't enough, GameMaker is only marginally supported by Wine :(

I must become a better player... I can hardly get to the ice levels (and that's starting from the jungle)

YOU MADE IT!

FINAL SCORE:
$201550

TIME: 20:56
KILLS: 68
SAVES: 1

PLAYS:    739
DEATHS: 738

I missed out on the city of gold because I died on level before its entrance.  Also only one save and no blood skull, of course I used the ankh to restore my life.   Got the mummys staff too.  Oh well, thats a challenge for another year.

Now I can get back to my life.    I will delete spelunky now.  Bye Bye.

So has anyone else here gotten the secret character yet?

Not yet, I have only unlocked the save the damsel game (sun), and I am silver on the changing room.  Nothing on the other two.

I've advised elsewhere that the best way to get the kills award is to farm enemies in the end boss room, ideally while using the mummy's scepter as your weapon.

The gold one you will definitely get if you make a city of gold run and bring bunch of bombs with you, but in my opinion that's harder than the challenge itself.  Just try to collect as many items (especially bombs) as possible, and take your time getting everything you can in each level.

The time one is what I consider to be the hardest one.  Just book it, don't go for any gold or any powerups that will take you more than a few seconds to obtain.  It's possible to reach the jungle area in under 1 minute if you get a halfway decent layout and don't let anything distract you.

Farming the last level, was indeed easy with the staff. Now I have only the timed challenge to go.
Died on the 14 level in 5 minutes.
I dont like any of the challenge games though, not my style.  I dont really like playing games where the challenge is to see how long you live.

I think the challenges are kind of fun, but don't have any kind of lasting entertainment value.  The unlockable character is the real reward for unlocking the four rooms.  Incidentally, his special ability allows him to completely break the challenge rooms.

Here's something I found today that should be rather nice to chew on folks:

http://www.youtube.com/user/ortoslon#p/c/EFE965087A58FF8D

A series of rather magnificent speedruns of the latest Spelunky---with Video #4 also having a rather nifty and fitting bit of music to it

Yay, finally got my speed run done.  (after about 6 deaths to the stupid giant head).
All challenges unlocked and special character. Yeehaw.

"Well no! Here it is in my pocket! Isn't that odd now? Yet after all why not? Why shouldn't it stay there?"

"And what business of it of yours anyway, to know what I do with my own things? It is my own. I found it. It came to me."

Ha, now finished every challenge, well city of gold was only one left, that was fun.  Now I really will leave it to Frodo, err, I mean delete it...

...Now that feels better.

Yay, and now it works in wine too, great!

I don't know how to play this thing, I rarely got into the ice level (I think it is ice level, it's a long time I've seen it).

Well what's giving you trouble?
Title: Re: Spelunky: How Deep
Post by: dweller on January 08, 2010, 05:00:08 PM
Clumsiness? I often crash into monsters when I want just get closer and hit them with whip. It is ok in the first levels, but cavemen, frogs, spiders, are too dangerous, anything what leaps and jumps is too unpredictable for me. Maybe they have constant jumping routines, but I can't see them.
This and instakill jungle trap. All I need is practice and patience. I haven't looked into spoilers/hints yet.

Are level shortcuts only good for practicing? is it recommended to play from the beginning if you want to finish it? why?

This is a really late reply, but I would say, yes, the main reason for shortcuts is to check later areas out without losing a good run.  Once you get good at the game, earlier areas exist almost entirely as places to build up your power instead of being serious threats.

I know this is an old topic, but I just wondered if anyone here would be interested in me making this game a bit easier. I die like on level 2 over and over. But I have been fiddling with the source and I'm pretty sure I can get put in infinite bombs, health, etc...
It's kinda cheap...best to figure the game out by yourself. But it is doable.

Hmm, you can save scum on roguelikes to  ;)

There are already many variants out there that have capabilities this this, as well as unlimited life.
Spelunky has been the most rewarding gaming experience I have had in many years, with persistence comes skill.
I found Spelunky very hard at the start and after literally thousands of deaths, I find it relatively easy, even the later levels. It just comes down to lots of practice.
DONT give up so easy. Eventually you will be double jumping off toads, smacking down shopkeepers and filling your skull idol until it overflows.
Spelunky is one of the most awesome games I have ever played. It takes a lot of persistence, but is well worth it.

I thought the short cuts were so people who weren't going to train hard on the game could see the ending (like myself), but without dumbing down the difficulty, as there is still the honour of going from start to finish to be had for those who did train hard on it?
Title: Re: Spelunky: How Deep
Post by: corremn on February 10, 2011, 11:07:27 PM
Short cuts are for people to train for the different levels. Which is a great game feature, Spelunky would not be so good with out it.  It allows people who would of given up in frustration to actually experience more of the game, and because of that you play more and like the game more, even be rewarded with a cheap victory. This is just another element that sucks people into the game.  Derek Yu really knows what the hell he is doing.  True Genius. There is so much to learn about game development from the "simple" game, all budding game developers should play this one.

Figured I'd resurrect this old thread.

Been playing quite a bit. Anyone see the whip as a bit extraneous? Like it is a bit fiddly to use and you don't really need it anyway. I rarely use it unless I need to. I toss rocks at guys mostly.

Did anyone mod the whip so you could swing around with it? Bionic Commando style? That'd be nifty.
Title: Re: Spelunky: How Deep

The whip is a perfectly usable weapon.  Obviously there are better options, but they aren't always available, and the whip is.  If you take the time to learn to use it, it can save your life.

Gotta try this one.. always loved nintendo8bit-like difficulty games.

Should be this one, right?
