I enjoyed the few times I played, but both attempts ended with the game freezing up. Have you heard anyone else say this? If not, I'll play again and give a better description.

When did you play? I fixed a game crashing bug about wednesday after the deadline IIRC.

I think you could give it a shot now, I haven't been reported freezing games lately.

Hey Slash I remember play testing a dungeon dive, but when I play it now I'm stuck in an overworld with a guy named DERP. I put in 'JO' as my name, select charge, and then I'm in a large room with green dot tiles, a river and a blue guy named DERP.

EDIT: So Ancient was on playing with me (nice chat feature BTW). He let me know to press space bar to start the dungeon. Weird requirement you know? The dungeon, however, froze on level one. Tried it a couple of times. Same issue. Tried the offline version and didn't get past the 'enter your name' screen. It's a good thing though, I was fixin' to pound your game into bloody submission and drag that pansie Rodney out by his ear. Sorry Slashie...:-(

What browser are you using? I just played this morning without issues down to level 19

Have you seen GameHunter's video?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2NS7ls5JFc

He had similar problems in Internet Explorer and Firefox.

Damn IE, I'll take a look to see what might be crashing it.

In the meantime, Google Chrome is the preferred browser

Also, the empty room with the river is supposed to be a town level where people can chat and bump into each other... but it has served more for confusion than for interaction :P

Well if we just knew to hit space bar it'd be no issue really.

Firefox for me. Guess I need to finally get on the google train and adopt chrome.

Just added a message for that.

Here is some strange situation. Yeti hit me really hard. I opened inventory, and selected potion of extra healing. And now I'm dead with 100+ hp.

Another extremely annoying thing is chance of ants to reduce strength. They reduce it almost on every hit! Without reliable way to avoid combat it's a little harsh, I think.

Just upgraded to IE 10, works great even online mode. A lot smoother than IE 9 which was a little jumpy. I noticed that there aren't healing potions past level 13 or so (or maybe they just get way more rare). Was not prepared. Would have stocked up more if I had known.

Also, if you're running, you can end up inside a wall, which allows you to pass through walls that are only 1 wall thick.

Edit; This seems to be a bug with the assault skill, it only works if you have assault.

Yeah that's the special ninja wall move that only pro players know. Keep it secret, keep it safe.

Okay, potions do spawn lower than 13, but I have a problem with things randomly disappearing from my inventory. At first, it was just stuff that I had equipped that was worn out. It was still equipped, but nowhere in my inventory could I drop it or see it. Then, it started happening to my potions, then it took everything in my inventory including the non worn out items I have equipped. 0 inventory items despite having 2 equipped.

Also, is there any way to regain the health and strength lost from wraiths?

The game crashed when entering new level.
Dungeon.js:71 Cannot set property 'position' of undefined.

@elig maybe nymphs stole the items?

Assault +charge works well against giant ants

Thanks for the reports!

Ah, I didn't know they could steal!
Title: Re: Can you find Rodney?
Post by: Slash on March 28, 2013, 02:46:59 PM
Yeah, run like a chicken when you see them... or charge and assault them with a pointy stick
Title: Re: Can you find Rodney?

Assault +charge works well against giant ants
That only works when you have space for maneuver. But when you enter new level and ant is next to you, there is not much you can do about it. And when it reduces your strength by one with each hit, and there is no way to restore lost strength, it's straight way to restart the game.

Strange thing happened to me. Unfortunately I forgot to make screenshot.
I entered new level and got killed by a troll. According to message log. But there was no trolls in sight!
I know that the game can generate two enemies in one tile. Probably it can generate enemy on top (or is it under?) of player?

Yay for lack of polish :( I'll fix these details tomorrow and release a post 7drl version.

I'm glad I was able to produce something fun and enjoyable this year tho
Title: Re: Can you find Rodney?

Yesterday I reached level 23 where a dragon toasted me. Didn't get "you die" message. The game just restarted. It was just after I drank healing potion. Possibly my new hit points were not enough to survive a hit from the beast. Argh.

Other problems:
1) With backflip power you can enter walls.

####
..@##
.....
...##

Move northwest. Under this logic backflip should place you into a wall ... so it does not happen and you go forward instead of checking for wall jump which would be appropriate here. Also, I wait with taking backflip as long as possible because it ruins wall jump in many cases.

2) Nymphs may steal equipped items. Then these disappear from your inventory but are still wielded / worn. You get more space without having to drop things.

Yes, this game is definitely fun. I would go as far as saying it is the first time you managed to capture the joy of playing original Rogue in 7DRL.

I think lost strength from ants is not recoverable on purpose. Lost max hp from wraiths cannot be restored even by drinking healing potions at full health.

Edit: My browser is Opera and, like Jo, I had to hit space first to be dropped in the dungeon.

Lv 23, congratulations!

The first press space is not a bug, that's the way to leave the lobby level

Back flip into the wall? You calling that a bug? Sounds like a feature. ;-)

EDIT: @Slashie...I feel the same way this year.

It's still crashing in firefox.
--
[10:09:35.769] TypeError: can't convert undefined to object @ http://games.slashware.net/rodney/js/Player.js?v=6a:125

Happened in second room of dungeon.

Probably you should wrap logic in main loop into try/catch and at least notify user about error?
Or even try to recover...
Title: Re: Can you find Rodney?

Does it happen frequently? Or just one time?

Ants are mean.  I consider them the #1 biggest threat in this game.

By the way, when I push up or down to move, it makes my window scroll up and down is well.  Is there a way to prevent that from happening?

Very frequently. The game is almost unplayable.

I haven't tested new version in Chrome yet.
But previous error (Dungeon.js:71) was in chrome, yet seems to be very rare.
I use Chrome on Mac (at work) and Firefox on Windows (at home).

Unable to replicate it so far... also the game is extremely laggy on firefox :(

The speed is fine in my FF.
It's strange. It crashed several times in a row yesterday!
And crashed today. But once I added try/catch with logging in remember, it stopped crashing!
Then I reloaded it, and ... it's crashing :-/
Feels like a bug in js implementation of FF.

The weird thing is there should be no evil at Player.js:151

unless it's some sort of very weird  concurrency issue...

Anyone else having trouble on firefox?

Yeah man, can't play on FF. It locks up after awhile. Couldn't even type my name in with IE, but I only tried that once.

Slash: try to preallocate memory map too. I can't tell fore sure, but the bug in FF is definitely related to allocating it 'just in time'.

I played latest version for some time and here are some thoughts.
I was sure that ruined spear still dealing damage and ruined plate mail still protecting in previous version was a feature. But since you fixed this, it was a bug. But now I'm totally and utterly out of weapons!
They are getting ruined almost instantly. I tried to unwield weapon on trivial enemies, and wield it on hard ones.
But later on almost all enemies are hard!
It also looks like the speed of weapon wearing off depends on damage boosting special movements.
Which is (IMO) somewhat wrong. It doesn't matter how I kill nymph. It only matters how hard/soft she is.
In terms of damage to weapon that is.
You also nerfed destroy, and now I have to burn weapon on ants too, since dealing double damage with 6 str to them is not always enough to kill them. It looks to me that if you don't find 2-3 potions of str till level 14, you can easily start over.
Upon entering lvl22 I found myself with two smiling and drooling dragons around me in a corridor. And other monsters behind dragons, so no chance to walljump. I burned all potions and got killed and chewed. That felt very unfair.

p.s. And it would be nice if game will stop react on ctrl/alt/shift keys. It's rather strange to skip turns of pick things when you try to press some global hotkey :)

Felt good to actually play something that is actually a roguelike. Especially coming from you, back to basics :) Good work.
And yeah my weapons broke too quickly.

Got to floor 22 before being trashed by a dragon.  I hit the action key to to drink an extra healing potion, but I picked up an item on the ground instead : (

I don't think the crush/raze perks are working correctly.  I picked butcher early on, and my strength increased from 3 to 6, but crush and raze both left it at 6.

You can use 'I' for those critical times. Sorry for your loss... close!

Been able to see Rodney already?

Aha! fixed for next version.

Still thinking how to fix difficulty on first floors, first gotta find out *why* they are easy

Gosh you know Slash I'm not that careful of a player, I wasn't paying attention to the feedback. I do know that my HP didn't get a dent in it until the Yetis. I was so full of healing potions I took the +5 inventory perk early. I remember sitting at the same HP level for like 3 levels.
