Title: Games for Soldiers: Looking for Ideas
Post by: NeedsFoodBadly on January 06, 2013, 12:52:45 AM
I'm working with Games for Soldiers (www.gamesforsoldiers.com) and hopefully some other organizations on compiling a DVD collection of DRM-free, freely distributable freeware pc games for deployed troops.  I'm trying to compile a hand-picked collection of the best games that money can't buy.  These games would be tailored to play on lower end computers/laptops, not requiring the latest and greatest CPU/GPU to play and not requiring an internet connection to play or install.

I'm working on compiling the collection, including faqs/guides/instructions with the games.  Once I've finished compiling it my intention is to send these DVDs out to organizations like Games for Soldiers who will in turn distribute them to deployed troops.

I've been there myself (deployed to Iraq twice) and if you have internet at all you're lucky and it's nice to have something to play in those rare occurrences when you do get spare time.

Of course, I'll be including some Roguelikes.  If anyone has any ideas or suggestions for games to include (not just roguelikes) hit me up!  Just comment below!

You can also read/comment about it here:

Spelunky and DoomRL (with Yu's tileset) seem like naturals for this.

Oh man I left this big ol' comment there. I mentioned a ton of games.

I think the danger is to add too many experimental type games, or ones that are neat but lack that certain polish that your average gamer equates with a good game. Lots of Roguelikes are in that camp.

I think Hero Core is a good example too. Great game, but black and white graphics and slow gameplay are probably not what you are looking for.

This is a preliminary list of what I'm including on the discs.

I've also created a facebook page here if you'd like to support the project.

Survivors of Ragnarock may have gone commercial.

If you're having a Worms clone, you might as well have a real-time worms clone - http://www.liero.be/

Playing games may increase violent behaviour, so they say. What you need is meditation which leads to understanding and enlightenment.
