Here you have the character sheet.
http://img837.imageshack.us/img837/2964/silchampion.png
I was playing late and did not notice that blue character was a 'G'iant unique instead of merely 'o'rc champions which I sliced at leisure. It was the first encountered giant ever. Well, he took a swing and dealt whole 44 points of damage. My max health was 41. Sure, the armor took off 9 points from the punch but it was still really powerful. Well, thats you get for playing instead getting to sleep earlier. I was at 550 ft which is past halfway to Morgoth.
Leron had poison and blindness resistances. First from the mail second from the helm. The helm also grants bonus to perception and ability to see invisible things. Neato! The bow combined with flaming arrows talent is pretty powerful.
In my inventory there is axe for many common enemy types and a trumpet for tougher foes. I am wielding Orcrist! If I only recognized Nan, the Giant before getting hit I might have been able to waste him too. Orcobal, Gorgol and Othrond all fell to my might.
The luckiest thing was finding 'Orodruth'. It is the forge where Morgoth's mighty hammer Grond was smithed... and players get bonuses to their smithing while they are there. :-) I wanted to try using a potion of grace to see if it lets me create better things. It does but the effect needs to last for whole work to finish whatever you are forging.

Nice YASD. I'd started wondering whether this little gem (GET IT LIKE A SILMARIL) of a roguelike flew completely under everyone's radar.
I hope to have one to share with you in the near future, but for some reason this Naugrim just won't die...
So far it seems like the opportunist talent is worth investing in, as is the precision->flaming arrows->dexterity tree for elves. Other than that, very little seems to be more powerful than melee and evasion. I do tend to invest in the Song of the Trees, since lighting can become so important, and the difficulty in ID'ing items has led me to envy the Loremaster trait (and all the free XP that comes with it.)
I see that you, too, find yourself carrying around a suitcase of weapons for different purposes. Lots of creatures that need killing are immune to critical hits.
Do you find that smithing is worth it? I've started to completely ignore it.
I've yet to make it to 1000ft, by the way.
-
Uhm... which roguelike was this again?
-
http://www.amirrorclear.net/flowers/game/sil/
-
Ah, ok. Sil looked like the name of a character. Wasn't familiar with it being the name of a roguelike. I'll have to check that one out, thanks! :D
-
Yeah, Sil's a good one. Very self-contained, but fleshed out and complete. The tactical situations you can end up in are really nail-biting.
Spoiler: I've noticed that Murky Brown Potions are always Orcish Liqour, and that Clear Potions are Potions of Miruvor. Any others pre-ID'ed that anyone has noticed?
/End Spoiler
Anyhow, Tumhar the Naugrim, last among his brothers, did succumb to the forces of Angband. This was long after the auspicious discovery of a feanorean lamp at 50'. I should have known that when I found one of True Sight at 600', I wasn't seeing good fortune, I was seeing symbolic symmetry.
Although I do enjoy the Naugrim ability to deal damage to pretty much anything, those mega-crits that cats and deathblades do will cut anyone without a sufficient evasion to ribbons. Nonetheless, I was proud that he managed to take down a fair number of orcish champions, as well as a filthy Easterling or two (Krice knows what I'm talking about.)
Things I learned this game were:
1) Focused Attack -> Concentration is extremely powerful. It also puts you on the path to Master Hunter, which allows you to stand toe to toe with otherwise unhittable monsters. I think it's on my must-have list from now on. It made a world of difference. The downside is that it's going to make it impractical for me to go after other perception perks, due to the increased XP cost.
2) There are not a whole heck of a lot of artefact axes in this game.
3) Throwing mastery, with sufficient strength to carry the ammo and sufficient patience to do the repetitive keystroke thing, easily outweights archery in terms of stopping power for the Naugrim. Plus, throwing does not provoke an attack of opportunity.
4) It is so poignant to try and sound a silver trumpet with your last dying breath.

Sil is a very nice game indeed. I placed the name in square brackets to make it stand out but looks like this was not enough.
Yes, I like to have a weapon for each encounter. Helps especially against uniques.
Smithing is useful for me either on the very start if I find forge or much later. At the beginning I invest 300 exp and take weaponsmith talent thanks to smithing affinity. This nets me longbow + 24 arrows per remaining forge supplies which is great kickstarter for my elven bowmen.
Mid game I go for jewelcrafting and make myself some better rings and amulets. My last game had me find gauntlets of the forge (+3 to smithing) which allowed me to create amulet of constitution. More hit points never hurts.
However, I do not improve smithing until forge is found. They are too rare to risk sinking exp into this.
My best character fell through a crumbling floor down to 900ft and was promptly obliterated by ancient serpents that have lots and lots of protection. 7d4 I think.
Lore Master simply pays itself in gained XP and inventory space in the long run and invested perception helps you avoid those nasty traps or even disarm them semi-reliably.
Hint: surrounding character log with [tt] [/tt] causes it to be displayed in monospace font.

Morgoth took me out the same way he took out Fingolfin. His hammer actually makes pits under your feet. I was trying to drink a potion, but apparently unequipped something instead. What a way to go!
It looks like 1000' is not a random level. More like Vaults:8. I dug backward with my artefact mattock, and that was enough to survive the initial onslaught, but suddenly there he was, the dark lord himself. I'd dug myself into a corner, and died in that corner, in a pit, under a hammer. Fricken Morgoth.
The basic "build" of this character is something I'm going to stick with. Snatching the extra Dex point from the Archery tree and Constitution from Will is also a definite must.
Overall, though, I can't honestly tell anyone that I would have survived if there hadn't been a misclick. The last level is a true onslaught.

Woah, thats a nice character you have there. I presume you added a wound to those Fingolfin left on Valar's body?
103 hit points? Very tough. Also you had great equipment but the helm and ring of protection seem quite underpowered in contrast with rest of the gear.
I see you got jeweler and artifice talents. Did you craft something extraordinary?
Here is current best of mine. Ururaukos usually went down to one or two arrows at distance but when one caught me close up it was game over. Should not have dived as much.

Nice character. I too have died to the foul fire spirits of the underworld. They are deceptively fragile, but up close, you'd better take them out with one or two hits. That is actually part of why I prefer to get the song of two trees, and why I kept the helm of brilliance. Not only does a bigger light radius improve your ability to stop problems before they start, but it ups you versus dark elemental attacks. Plus I have a terrible claustraphobic fear of Shadow Spiders and worms.
Sil gives you few options in dire straits, so it's nice to have five or six squares illuminated.
But dude, what a sword! I've never encountered its like. In fact, the defender was the best I found, sad to say. My to-hit with concentration and master hunter was high enough to where I could crit most creatures with crit resistance, but with Glamdring... maybe...
Or maybe I'll try to focus on a two-hander next time.
I didn't make anything very cool with my blacksmithing ability. Points wasted. And my stats were way inflated -- I drank a lot of potions, for all the good they did me.
Do you think the ring of protection was a waste? I thought it was decent. What would you suggest?
Ah, one protip I have: Concentration is awesome. It doesn't differentiate between ranged and melee attacks, so you can build up your + to hit with arrows, then move in with your blade.
And I didn't hit Morgoth once. Not once! @#$%@#$%!
-
Yes, Glamdring proved to be quite murderous. If I had hit the darned Rauko it would be executed in single blow. Alas, I have not. Plus the sword's +3 to evasion combined with parry talent gave me another three. The other hand free for mithril shield was just icing on the cake.
Agreed, light radius is quite important. More than in other Angband variants.
Do you think the ring of protection was a waste? I thought it was decent. What would you suggest?
Maybe not a waste but more like suboptimal. I think with your amounts of protection accuracy ring would suit you better.

And if it flees stuff it with an arrow to the back still with the bonus? Neat! I thought focused attack + blocking would be more worthwhile but now this is up to debate again.
Not even once... Fingolfin must have been truly baddas elf.
-
A bit late to the party, but I'm glad you've been enjoying the game, and it sounds like you're both quite close to escaping with a Silmaril (though perhaps that will happen in 1.0.3).
Agreed, light radius is quite important. More than in other Angband variants.
Since light against darkness is such a major theme in the books we tried to keep it important in the game! I'm afraid the following isn't properly documented in the manual yet, but some monsters (e.g. orcs, undead) are light-averse, and get a penalty to all their skill rolls if the light level on their square is above 2 (penalty size equal to the degree of excess).
Maybe not a waste but more like suboptimal. I think with your amounts of protection accuracy ring would suit you better.
It might depend what kind of monsters give you problems. In general specialising in protection (or evasion) can be extremely effective, and the more protection you already have, the more the marginal value of getting more. But some enemies just do enough damage that if possible you're better with a different strategy entirely for surviving them.
I thought focused attack + blocking would be more worthwhile but now this is up to debate again.
Pausing to focus your attack won't break the concentration bonus (but of course it will build up slower than if you attack every round), so you can combine these if you want.

Thanks for the chime in! This is quite interesting piece of knowledge you impart. It would explain why later on orcs behave like wussies despite my characters not accumulating strictly offensive powers. I smash a single champion or captain of theirs and the rest flees in disorganized manner. Turns out the answer is I shined on them too much. :-)

Yummy! Haven't played Sil for a longer while but when exam session ends things are going to get normal again. Has the berserk bug been fixed? While under berserk condition when you look at creatures the name is just displayed as "enemy" but you can still use recall command to bypass this and get to know its name.

This is partially right. Bright light does make them more afraid (I hadn't actually meant to imply that, but that's because I forgot!), but there's a larger temporary effect where they get scared if you kill one of their leaders.

Thanks for drawing attention to this; we'll think about the best behaviour (ultimately the inability to tell what monsters are while enraged is more flavour than deliberate extra challenge, but I agree it's a bit silly to have such an easy workaround).
-
So for the second time, I got to Morgoth, and this time I actually pried a silmaril from his iron crown. It was awesome. Light is a huge issue in Sil, and a silmaril has a light radius of 7, so you feel kinda badass having one as your light source.
On my way back up, I was cornered by the dark lord and a few trolls, and was beaten into stone floor by Grond. Again.
This was my first time with a successful smith. There are a couple magical traits you can add to home-brewed artifacts that I don't think are found anywhere else, and if you attach penalties to your artifacts, you are able to make more powerful items than you would normally. Even with my smithing skill, I couldn't have made the artifacts I did without their negative aspects balancing out the difficulty level.
The Ring of Minath's Haste (always "Fast") was a huge deal. The Axe of Minath cut down opponents' armor by half, and it was with this mighty weapon that Minath dealt bloody wounds to Morgoth (at least 4 or 5 - no Fingolfin, but very respectable.) The Dwarf Mask of Diamond Courage gave resistance to elements, stunning (an issue when facing Grond), and fear (an issue in the deeper levels in general.)
Still, every time Morgoth hit me, it took about 3/4 of my life, and since Minath was a Naugrim, Morgoth hit me a lot. He deals massive physical damage.
Raise a tankard of ale to his memory.

Wow, just wow. Getting a Silmaril is an accomplishment! To top it off you forged neat artifacts to aid you on your quest.
I see that you started to invest much in smithing talents after fifteen thousand turns. Was it any good until this point?
-
I hoarded XP. The idea was, if I found a forge, I would sink the XP all into smithing and see what I could come up with. If instead I found a hundred trolls on one end of a hallway and a drake on the other end, I'd spend the XP on combat abilities instead. I think that when I next play, I'll try that strategy again.
On the other hand, you were totally right about Lore Master.
ProTip: Thrown weapons are based on MELEE, not archery. This means that a dwarf with a supply of spears or throwing axes can hold his own with the judicious use of missile weapons, without having to divide XP between melee and archery.
-
Threadomancy!
Just fired up another character and found something unusual in my inventory. Well done, Sil... and Merry Christmas!
-
SIL is performing strongly in the annual poll. As it should. I voted for it.
-
That's really good to see! And it reminded me to vote, which I did, for Sil. Briefly torn because I had so much fun with FTL, but Sil is a pure roguelike. Surprised to see ADOM there, kind of like if Casablanca was up for this year's Oscars because it was recently released on Blu-ray.

Congratulations. A win with a dwarf is extra impressive.
What was your Christmas present?

A victorious Naugrim hero! All my most haughty and most brave Noldor have perished so far. Congratulations, Jim. I will echo Scatha and say this is indeed impressive.

Thanks a lot, guys!
What was your Christmas present?
It was my mail corslet of resilience - definitely a big help at the beginning, but I ended up getting attached to it and wore it from start to finish. Wonderful idea to have the present in the game... I have to ask: what would have happened if I'd opened it before Christmas?
Sil is a great game, very rewarding and moreso the more you play it, just as a roguelike should be. It also has a nice length to it; by no means is it a coffeebreak roguelike, but you can also expect to complete a game in about 4-5 hours (as opposed to the likes of Crawl and ADOM, where playng is basically a part time job.)
Spoiler section: the end sequence at 1000 feet is awesomely cinematic, from the way the enemies cluster around you to the way your character evades hammer blows from Grond. I definitely couldn't have succeeded without assistance from the soundtrack to The Hobbit. Probably the best boss fight in a roguelike that I can remember.
I feel like Naugrim are simpler to play than Noldor. Maybe even easier. There are really two consistent walls of doom I hit in the early to mid game. One is the darkness death (shadow spider, shadow worm mass, anything like that.) If you can't see it, can't hit it, and can't escape or recover, you are pretty much screwed. The other wall I hit is the "can't hurt it" wall. Elves and their fancy little rapiers don't always do well against Easterling armor, and dwarves don't have that problem.

Thanks for the compliments.

I'm afraid you would have been cursed. (Rolling each skill roll twice for the rest of the game, and taking the worse result.)

Interesting. I think you'd probably find you could do pretty well now going back to an elf. Dwarves don't have much of an edge over the Noldor on either of those two counts (the +1 Str from Belegost helps a bit, but they hit much less often than elves, which counteracts this). However I can see that the high protection enemies can form a barrier, and you often need a plan to deal with this. There are a few alternatives, such as keeping a large weapon on swap, using Subtlety to get lots of criticals, singing Song of Sharpness, or simply avoiding them.
Good luck with your continued adventures! There's a new version out, by the way.
