Well I have been planning on getting cardlike 2.0 out for quite some time, but illness has prevented progress. Since the 7DRL challenge I have been sick as shit.
For those that do not know I am an attorney, or used to be, but became too ill to practice. Respiratory infections, chronic. I even tried working part time at my friend's gas station. I was just too weak to do it. So in December I applied for disability through the US government. They got back to me today, some 4.5 months later.
Verdict: Denied.
Apparently losing your ability to make a living due to illness is NOT grounds for being disabled. They treat everyone like they are faking. As if I would fake an illness to get $700 a month in welfare when my earning capacity at my law firm was 8-10k a month. Jesus...
So I'll appeal. I'll try to work a bit and try not to get fired. My work capacity is very low, then my health turns bad and my capacity is zero.
The 'greatest country on earth' has plenty of money to blow the holy fuck out of brown skinned people but cannot take care of it's own sick worth a shit. Wonderful. Seriously people bitch about paying taxes to take care of sick people but no problem paying to have people killed.
That's why I am proud to be an American. The greatest country on the planet.

If you don't mind me asking, what precisely is your illness? And symptoms? What sort of actions have/are you taking to try and keep it under control? How/when did you start noticing symptoms?
I feel like members of the internet generation would, by default, exhaust all possibilities to improve one's health via the vast array of information available; however, there is more information than a single set of fingers and eyes can parse. Each time you appeal to another person for aid you increase your chances of finding some alleviation by an order of magnitude.
Apart from that- hope you feel better.

Moldy or dusty environment? Those can cause chronic illness.
-
@Requerent - I was born with under developed liver and respiratory system. I was very premature. That was 1979, and I was in a part of the country with very bad health care. But I lived. Barely.
I did pretty well until the late 80's when I started to develop very bad throat and bronchial infections. One event saw me lose 20% of my body weight in 2 weeks. Nearly fatal. I had one surgery in 1992 or so. I did okay for a couple of years, ran track and field. Then in 1997 I came down with a major sinus infection that wouldn't go away. Complete air flow blockage in my nose for 4 to 6 months or so. I lost a ton of body weight as my blood became infected with the bacteria. If I were not so young and in great shape at the time I likely would have died. Another surgery and a TON of steroids and antibiotics won that battle.
2 years later I was under the knife again. Same issue. I continued to try to be as health as possible. And more or less did well between 2000 - 2005. My "glory days. " In early 2005 I got a sinus infection so bad it spread through my tear ducts to my eyes and made me go blind. The blindness lasted a few weeks. Lost my job, my health insurance, everything. I was never the same after that one. It took me forever to get the steroids and antibiotics required because I couldn't find a doctor that would see me without insurance who also knew what to do.
Luckily I figured out what to do when these major episodes pop up so now all I need is a doctor willing to sign off on a prescription. This is hard because the drugs are so very harsh, but usually they'll listen.
2006 to the present has been a constant struggle with fatigue and infection. I cannot sleep at night because of the air flow blockage. So along with the infections, which cause fever, blocked breathing and all kinds of mucus nastiness I also have a major sleep problem. I choke all night. So this causes heart issues and major energy problems. I also sometimes have trouble seeing because of the pressure and what not. Sleep apnea can be helped with a machine, but that machine also causes increased risk of respiratory infection. So you can see the issue there.
I do try to take care of myself. But right now my condition is worsened by my ballooned body weight. But I challenge anyone to be on prednizone for any length of time without just becoming fat as hell.
So as of right now I try to exercise when I am not too messed up. I eat as clean as possible, lots of produce and smaller portions.
As far as working goes the issue is consistency. I'm a very capable employee, and kick ass for a couple of weeks. But if I have one night where I choke too much and do not sleep well, then try to go to work, the strain on my system leads to fevers and infections that spiral out of control until I take a month or so off. Rest up. Take a ton of drugs if necessary.
The drugs required when I have a major episode (about once a year) are so harsh they actually make me sicker until I get better. Avalox and Prednisone for a month is usually what I take. These drugs are losing their effectiveness though, and the side effects are getting worse. I estimate I can use them 3 more times before they quit working. This estimation based on past experience with other drug cocktails. The next step when I get a major infection is hospitalization.
I've yet to find a job that allows for taking long amounts of time off at a moment's notice. Like what sort of boss is going to let you call in the morning and say, "Hey. I'm taking a month off. I'll need a $1000 advance on the drugs I need to keep me alive. Please. Thanks." So I'm putting my efforts towards writing fiction and games. Perhaps money can be made that way. Problem is I'm not so good at it. And I'm not sure I have energy required to get good enough to make money that way.
So there it is. On the upside I haven't worked since October, so I've been able to rest whenever needed. Sometimes in bed for 18 hours at a time. This is the first winter I've not had a major episode since 2004. Yay! Had I been working, however, I'd not have the option to stay in bed when needed. I tried to do some part time work at my friend's gas station in February, but I was feverish and sweating through my clothes by the end of my first shift. Pathetic!
EDIT: Lol...all that and I didn't address your post Req! I meant all that wall of words to show that I have been dealing with this for decades and have tried everything that can possibly be conceived. Everything but going vegan...dunno why but that route gets mentioned a lot. I went vegetarian for awhile but did something wrong and got sicker than shit.
-
As for the dusty/moldy environment. I've moved to every conceivable climate and there has been little change. I'm currently in a steppe (cold desert) environment. Formerly in a mild/wet environment (portland). I've also gone tropical (Hawaii) and hot dry (central california) and there has been no change.
Warm weather does seem to help. But without the means to support myself I do not have the option on were to live.
EDIT: Also note this is NOT an allergy thing. I've been tested many times for different allergens. My symptoms do not act up during a certain season. I can bail hay or work in a dusty barn all day without issue, at least when my energy is high.
-
I know there's not much anyone can do but I just thought I'd vent here on my favorite forum. I'm pretty isolated now that I'm not a big time lawyer anymore. I can't really throw house parties and go out on the town like I used to. Since I can't drive anymore and live in my parents basement. So one turns to the internet to express frustration. Kind of pathetic really. Meh...such is life.
I'm sure soon I'll figure out a new plan of action and execute it. Then I'll out conquering again.
-
So sorry to hear about your situation Jo.
If I could, I'd certainly help you.

Sympathies----I can relate a fair bit, as I too have previously vented and whatnot on here.
Hang in there!

Thanks Getter. It's good to vent. Very cathartic. I feel better already. :-)
Working on Cardlike helps quit a bit. It's sort of getting too epic in scope. I'll probably need to revise it down a bit.

I've been suffering from mild chronic fatigue myself because of my illness, but I found a great "medicine" to it: mega mass type supplement (protein+carbs, usually maltodextrin). It works so well for me because I'm a small guy and have difficulties eating enough. Also when you eat protein supplement it gives nothing but pure energy your body and muscles need. No fat included. The real trick is use the supplement wisely. It's not good to drink a lot of that stuff, but divide it to smaller portions taken during the day. Another great thing is that even small portion will make you less hungry so you don't eat too much other stuff with fat etc. The energy you get from proteins+carbs is natural without side effects, so it's not like drinking coffee or energy drinks (which both are bad for your health).
-
Holy shit- I cried.
If you have problems primarily with infections, then there may be a nutritional course of action that can be helpful. One problem with being born premature is an opportunity to fill your gut with the good bacteria necessary to supplement your immune system. I think... at any given point in time the average human has about 10-100 (it may be more like 10,000, I can't remember) good bacteria for every human cell on their body (we are mostly foreign critters O_O). Antibiotics are NOT trivial because they kill both. Necessary if an infection occurs, but afterwards it's necessary to get those good bacteria back because they help ensure that digestive resources get used effectively (necessary for proper immune function).
Whatever you do, don't go vegan or vegetarian. They aren't good ideas for people with health problems. As far as nutrition is concerned, you want easy energy that can't be absorbed by bad bacteria. That means eliminating sugar as much as possible. Not just 'sugar,' but naturally occuring mono and disaccharides (IE lactose from milk). If you can't eliminate, try to keep it to under 1 gram per serving. What you want are these things call oligosaccharides- they are short chain starches or complex sugars that will ferment in your gut, stabilizing your GI tract's Ph and feeding good bacteria as it gets broken down into simple sugar. Our primary source for the oligosaccharides necessary for building gut flora is in mother's milk- after that we don't find large quantities of it in average diets. Asparagus, garlic and Soybeans are good sources of the three types.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inulin#Natural_sources_of_inulin
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oligosaccharide#Sources
You also need good bacteria. The easiest way to do this is by making your own Kefir. You just need a 16oz jar, kefir grains (you can get 'em freeze-dried online) and milk. The Kefir grains are yeast/bacteria cultures that eat the lactose. Just let them ferment at room temperature for 24 hours in a glass jar with milk. strain out the grains and drink the liquid. Reconstitute the same grains with milk and repeat. It's very easy and in 2 months you'll probably no longer need to use toilet paper (in a good way). I like recommending kefir because it's incredibly inexpensive and it's an easy solution to keep up with. If you did only one thing, this would probably help quite a bit. Kefir will still have lactose in it (contradicting the point above), but it's going down with lots of good bacteria.
This obnoxiously awful website pretty much started the 'Kefir revolution'- it's a good resource but there may be more succinct sources elsewhere http://users.sa.chariot.net.au/~dna/kefirpage.html.
Otherwise, try to stick to pickled and fermented foods. Truly picked foods, in the ingredients list, will have only salt, water, and the food being pickled (plus spices)- it won't have vinegar or any kind of sugar. On the nutritional facts, pickled food should also have a very low or nonexistent sugar content (less than one gram). Sauerkraut and pickles are the easiest things to find-- but if you feel like this sort of thing is helpful to you, making pickles is incredibly inexpensive. Salt, water, jars (you can reuse jars bought from the store- they all have pickling lids that will repop from the fermentation gases), and stuff to ferment- plus the internet for some guides.
Stick to sourdough for bread- don't need to shy too far away from beer, undistilled fermented beverages help fight infection (stick to original bottle fermentation)- if your liver can handle them in small quantities. Also highly recommend supplementing with Zinc- it will help your liver and other aspects of the immune system.
Mmm... Oh. Recommend high quality (care not cut) beef. A chuck roast, when prepared properly, will run you about 4 dollars a pound and taste like rib-eye. Bivalves are also good.
-
Well that was quite hard core. However it's true what you say about antibiotics, they destroy also good guys. But sometimes you can't avoid using antibiotics.
I would be careful when trying extreme diets. Internet is full of them and the usual trick is ban one of the main components. Carbs are on the top of the list, while in reality we need carbonhydrates. It's the excess that is bad.
-
I am not a nutritionist but still a health practicioner, and from my personal point of view one of the most brilliant researcher we have today about food, nutrition and general wellbeing is dr. Joseph Mercola.. I personally try to follow many of his recommendations and very often agree with his perspectives. Basically I try to exercise often, stay away from neo-carbs and high g.i. carbs, get plenty of sunlight exposure and saturated/monounsaturated(raw) fats in my diet. Never been ill since years, and the last time I took a pill was probably in 2008.. I was keeping taking antihistaminics because of my allergy until one day I threw everything away (pills and my confidence in the application of nosographic/descriptive medicine in every field of our lives).
I think that almost 99% of humankind diseases are about exposure to molds, blood acidosis and lack of vitamin d. Once those three issues are solved, basically every condition has a hard time to keep existing.
I'm not saying it's something easy, because nowadays the government, along with the food industry and the traditional medicine, seems trying to do their best to harm us.. tap water is full of fluoride and clorine residuates (way worse than clorine itself), milk gets pasteurized (sometimes irradiated) by law and cows are fed grains, meat is full of hormones and antibiotics, veggies covered by pesticides.. and initial low levels of vitamin d can make it harder to start to regularly exercise or get sun exposure.. but the process can also be gradual and the more, the better.
Just my 2 cents, everyone should conduct his own research and decide consequently.
-
Wow. That is sad, Jo. I hope you get the help you need.
-
thanks Fenrir.
Yeah man it is fucking sad. Brutally depressing really. But I'm generally a happy guy. I only stay down for about as long as it takes to write a forum post! :-)
As far as all of the 'crazy'* diet advice and what not. It is very common for people to look at diet first and try to make recommendations. That's the new fad. When I was first getting sick over 20 years ago the craze was similar but the recommendations were different. It was all about whole grains, now it's about organics and shit. Whatever. I just cut out nearly all processed food and try to eat as much organic as I can find and afford.
My diet has varied wildly over the years. So has my environment. They have have absolutely ZERO impact. I've been fat. I've been thin. I've exercised daily. I've sat on my ass and did nothing. The only thing that seems to work is rest and lack of stress. If I rest and do nothing I can go a long time without being sick. If I push myself I get sick pretty quickly and stay sick for months and months.
*I call call it crazy, but that does not mean it's not correct or valuable. In this backward town I'm the crazy guy for not drinking soda and thinking Pizza Hut is horse shit.
-
@Req - Strangely I have not tried Kefir. I'll see if I can get some with my food stamps somewhere. I've not had any drugs in a year now. It's the longest I've gone since about 2002. So hopefully any gut issues are righting themselves. The drugs I take are so harsh my guts take months to get right.
Have you ever heard of a fecal transplant? If you have bad gut issues it's something to consider. I'll not link it. That's something you'll have to discover on your own. HA!
Sounds like what I really need is some breast milk. Yep.
It should be noted that the nature of my health issues at birth meant I never breast fed or was given breast milk. Not once.
I eat a ton of garlic and asparagus though. Also a lot of strange unprocessed yogurts. And oatmeal. Not so much soybeans. I haven't cut dairy out of my diet in a few years, but when I did I got sicker than hell. 3rd sickest I'd ever been (I rank them, lol).
I seem to function best eating good breads, cheeses and produce. Meat, milk and fruit is not so much my thing. Though lately I've gotten into organic milks and odwalla soy chocolate milk. Yum.

Regarding diet... (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGE6gF07axw&t=4m34s)

Lewis Black is on to something there. Every new doctor I see claims they are going to improve my health. None do. It's a circus. I just laugh at them. Try to explain I've been sick for forever. But it's always the same. Only one has admitted that I'm in for a lifetime struggle. The rest act like this is a passing phase.
After my last surgery (my 4rth) I didn't improve. I got worse, but the doctor had the balls to say the surgery was successful. She told me she fixed my headaches, so that's a success. However, headaches were never a problem, never mentioned as a symptom. Then she tried the classic "turn it back on you" strategy. She told me I was not improving because I was fat, which happens when your doctor pumps you up with steroids. When I called bullshit she advised me to see a therapist, maybe I was just depressed.
That's when I threatened to sue for malpractice, for having knowingly recommended and doing an unnecessary surgery.
"What do you mean unnecessary? It was for your headaches."
"No. Headaches were never mentioned as a symptom, and I take copious notes (I wrote down everything and she knew it). Further, if my issues are emotional or weight related, as you are now saying, then the surgery you did was inappropriate."
She backed down then. Tried to say something encouraging.
I've refused to pay her bill, it is now several years past due. I'll be bankrupting sometime late summer/early fall. She can go fuck herself. Don't even get me started on why my health insurance wouldn't cover the bill, that's another topic way too long and frustrating to talk about now.
So yeah I do not trust anyone's medical advice, but at this point I'm willing to try just about anything.
-Jo

What an arrogant pretemptious bitch. Well done dude.

If they didn't count student loans and medical bills against people's credit, they'd have to invent some kind of new scoring system that went up to 2000.
-
She told me I was not improving because I was fat, which happens when your doctor pumps you up with steroids.
Well you also need to eat to get fat. Maybe you are blaming your fatness too much on drugs? Besides now when I listen to your ideas about diets it raises a question: what do you eat? These days there are a lot of people who don't know how to eat well. After all we need a little bit of everything so it's not a good idea to follow strict or limited diet.
-
When you take prednisone one of the major side effects is weight gain. Your face puffs up and you retain all kinds of fluid and shit. Blow up like a balloon. Also you feel like you are absolutely starving all the time. It's terrible. Not everyone gets that side effect, most do.
I haven't put on weight in years though. It's been slow to come off, but I put a stop to the gaining once I figured out what was going on. I could drop it much quicker but a restrictive diet weakens me and I get sick almost immediately. So nowadays I just pay attention to portion sizes, eat slow and I've been successful over the long term shedding pounds. I exercise when I'm not too ill, but only moderately. I don't go overboard. The system is too delicate.
I have altered my diet more times than I can count to either no effect, or negative effect, but since you are curious I'll tell you what I ate today. 1 bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch (the best!), 3 microwave burritos, 3 red bulls and some frozen berries and some chicken and broccoli. HA!
As you can imagine that is hardly a typical day, I'd be dead. I'm not sure I could tell you what a typical day is, I change it up quite a bit, but I never eat microwave burritos and red bull is pretty rare. Sugary cereal though, I'll have that like 2-3 times a week easy. Part of a balanced breakfast. :-)
-

Throw away that red bull shit. Drink water and I mean it. Cereals are ok-ish (but if they contain sugar it's bad), but it really looks like you need more protein. I think you would benefit a lot from that protein supplement I suggested. It's good to know that carbs and fats make you hungrier, while proteins will reduce the feel of hunger. With food like that you should also take multi-vitamin-mineral supplement. Most importantly you need to replace that burrito-cereal-crap to real food.
-
I don't want to sound smartass but fats have the opposite effect, they're essential to keep hunger away.
Despite common belief, saturated fats are good as they're very stable (unlike poliunsaturated which should never be consumed cooked/heatened) and also don't get converted in saturated fats again (carbs do).
-
Anyway sorry for contributing to turn your thread into a nutritional-advice one, Jo.
I repeat.. I am very sad about your situation, and also way pissed off about what's going on in this historical time.. looks like some people are more entitled than others in this "era of equality"..
-
Oh no biggie. Diet is always what people want to talk about first. I have no problem talking about it because I am confident in my diet. I go after balance and whole foods and it has worked fine. I've been off drugs now almost a year now, but that's nothing to do with diet. It's because I've been doing nothing but resting and surfing the web. Zero stress helps you stay healthy. I still have problems, but I'm off drugs.
I have found that people quickly want to find out what I'm doing wrong. In order to judge. Like I'm sick because I fucked up or am continuing to fuck up. If I were sick because of mistakes I am making I'd fix them. Changing diet is as simple as a shopping list. I think people are just scared to admit that sometimes there ain't shit you can do. Good people doing good things can just get fucked. It doesn't make them bad and lazy, just sort of unfortunate. Count yourself lucky.
Worse is that my illness isn't visible. Most days I function pretty well. It's only when I push myself for a day or three that I start getting run down and sick. So it's easy for people to see me and say, "That guy is fine. He's just a whiny little bitch."
-
Ha!
As an example.
The other day I was too exhausted to make it to my friend's farm to work (for free!). I ended up sleeping all day and waking up about 5 in the afternoon. I felt pretty good then. Got up, stretched, ready to go. My friend calls to see if I want to play video games. I said, "Sure, why not." Then he called me a faker, telling me if I was too sick to come over and pull weeds I should be too sick to come over a play video games.
Now I know he knows I'm not a faker, but when you are ill people want to find reasons to call you lazy. Pathetic. If I'd just told him I didn't want to come work at the farm I'd rather stay home and post to Rogue Temple he'd not have been so upset. There is this notion that one is using the illness as an excuse to be lazy. Even though I made it through law school and started my own law firm while very ill, people still try to judge me lazy. Dumbasses.
-
I can vouch for this as well----it never stops stinging especially if you happened to have something of a strong work ethic/workaholic slant prior to become "defective". :(
-
Then he called me a faker, telling me if I was too sick to come over and pull weeds I should be too sick to come over a play video games.
I could hardly tell you how to treat your friends, but I would make my displeasure very clear to him, and, if I were in a particularly sour mood, I might further leave the man to tend his own damn farm thenceforth.
e: The matter is, of course, already concluded; I am just expressing my distaste.
-
Most days I function pretty well. It's only when I push myself for a day or three that I start getting run down and sick.
So why do you force yourself to full speed? Take it easier.
-
I have found that people quickly want to find out what I'm doing wrong.
Even if you have illness, you surely can do things wrong to make it worse. In fact many people do exactly that and then they blame it all on their illness. It's their problem anyway. I really don't care.
-
The real issue ends up being bigger than just one friend. Many many friends take this attitude. I've chosen patience over loneliness.
Luckily with my closest friends I can be blunt. I tell them to stop being ass fucks and also appeal to reason. Simply ask the question, why would someone with my earning capacity decide to waste away in his parent's dirt basement at 33?
As far as the farm, they let me sell their produce at farmer's markets from time to time. 1 day a week in the summer. If I succeed there I'll look into something part time, like 12 hours a week, and see how it goes.
@Getter - yes. The contrast between high productivity and direction to having none is mind blowing.
@Fenrir - That's the new plan of action. I made it through winter without needing drugs. Now I am exercising and eating as healthy as possible. Soon I'll sell berries once a week. Then move that up to maybe 12 hours a week in the fall. Try to see just how 'easy' I need to take it. Prior efforts have been full on gung ho. I failed at that over the last 2-3 years so am now trying the 'easy' approach.
@Krice - I have found many things make my illness much worse. Mostly just pushing too hard work wise. Also staying up late drinking with friends is totally out (duh!). Another big no no is getting out of bed in an unrested state. All of those are likely to lead to major problems lasting days or weeks. My statement about people trying to find things wrong was more about people immediately assuming I must be doing things wrong, when in fact my entire life is dedicated to getting better. It consumes me. It's really the most important thing in my life, ever. Come close to dying a few times and watch your life disintegrate and your priorities snap very quickly into focus. Get better or die.
-
Zero stress helps you stay healthy.
This is very wise and has perfect scientific explanation. Many people never realize this and wonder why they keep being fat/sad/sick despite they exercise 7 times a week and eat nothing but veggies and other boring shit.
But zero stress + vitamin d through sunlight exposure + staying away from neofoods, pills and ingredients you can't pronunciate is certainly better than just zero stress!
The key is one: himmunitary system. Everything I mentioned just works toward this only goal. We are truly amazing creatures.. despite what the pharmaceutical industry and the government tell us, we really don't need external ways to fix things in our body, we're already designed in the most perfect way we could have been.. that's my view, maybe a little biased by my own phylosophical beliefs but also strongly supported by my studies.
Count yourself lucky.
I do but consider that before I was also in bad condition because of my allergy.. there have been times years ago when I also thinked about suiciide because of how much it influenced my life. Now it's just a thing of the past.
I know how annoying it is to listen to people who tell you what you should or shouldn't do.. but that's just all I feel I can do in a forum and also a way to show you my presence mate.
Very happy you're feeling better these days.
-
Oh yes I appreciate everything. Advice, well wishers, fellow ranters, all good.
About suicide, I already faced that monster. The contrast between what I achieved educationally and professionally and what I am right now is so great that any person would be depressed as shit.
But I found a goal. To do what I can to be healthy every second. It will be my new "life's work". Guys like me need something like that. An over arching goal.
Well...that and some sweet gaymes.

I'm resurrecting this topic because I am on day 4 of not eating wheat and have seen a dramatic improvement. Obvious and dramatic.
Fucking doctors told me I wasn't allergic to anything. A conclusive and firm finding on their part. My problem wasn't an allergy, they said. It's way too early to tell, only 4 days, but right now I'm in nearly perfect health.
So right now I love everyone. EVERYBODY!!!! Except for the 4 surgeons who sliced me open promising to fix me. Those fuckers can choke to death on a Christmas candy cane. :-)
MERRY XMAS!!!!

That's great to hear Jo!!
Merry Xmas, and when you have a chanche have a look at mercola.com and his nutritional types, you probably are a proteins-fats type.

Great to hear. You must feel like a free man.

Always good to get answers at long last----glad to see things take a turn for the better. :)

Went back on the dairy last night, no problems, so it's got to be the wheat.
KING OF THE WORLD.

If you "failed" an allergy test but see improvements from getting off of gluten, you may have Celiac disease. Diagnosing it properly won't really make a difference though, the treatment is to avoid Gluten. I've known a few people with it-- all of whom also have to stay away from processed/simple sugar.
Congrats man!

It's just so simple. I'm happy and sort of kicking myself at the same time.
The lesson here is if you have something chronic, you have to fix yourself, and it's probably something you're eating. Don't trust your doctors to figure it out or to be correct about you NOT having an allergy.
The American system doesn't make money if you get better. Profit man, it just doesn't mesh well with healthcare problems a lot of the time.
I'll always have screwy sinuses, that's a given, but that' doesn't mean I have to be constantly infected.
Getting away from sugar is probably the best thing to do as well, very toxic over time.

Wow. Glad to hear it, Jo. All the best to you.
As always,

Went back on the dairy last night, no problems, so it's got to be the wheat.
It may also be yeast. My stomach gets crazy if I eat white bread or buns, which has yeast. But I can eat other types of cakes with no yeast used as ingredient.

I'm also having trouble with corn, so maybe that's also it. I'll be getting a full battery of tests soon. In the US that means I need to have around $300 cash up front. I imagine in Finland people are able to seek medical help when they are sick, and not just when they have money. Is that true?
-
Pffft. Sick? Finns don’t get sick. They laugh at your frailties.

Finland has pretty cheap healthcare, but unfortunately it also means it can be pretty crappy sometimes (this varies a lot from place to place and from day to day). I'm really glad I have a dental plan from work and can use a private dental clinic of my choice, instead of a public one. But if the choice is between almost free and no healthcare at all, the almost free one is great of course. And getting a CT scan for 30 euros is much nicer than paying for the full cost (of course we pay it eventually in the form of taxes).
Best of luck to you Jo, hopefully they can figure things out and it gets easier for you.

I think celiac disase is difficult to test reliably, so I've heard. Even if you don't have it according to tests it may be good to leave wheat out of your diet. I don't have celiac disease, but when I stopped eating white bread it was a good idea.

Yes and no.. some procedures cost a lot, but basic health care is pretty much free. However it means we do pay a heck lot of taxes and public health care is inefficient, especially because you sometimes have to wait a while to get in doctor. I was waiting for my hernia operation for almost a year. They try to get things done with least amount of doctors etc. to save money. I think the quality of health care is still good.
We also have private sector of hospitals so if you are rich you can skip the line. I know that hernia operation would have cost me about 1500 euros in a private hospital.
-
1500? HA!
You can't set foot in an American hospital without at least that much.
-
Sorry to hear it, Jo. I honestly hope things work out for you.
-
Personally, I'm tired of seeing a guy at the grocery store pay for his food with food stamps, and then watch him walk outside and get in his $70,000 Cadillac Escalade...
Finally, someone is telling it like it is! I hate when I see those things in my imagination, too!
-
Cheap health care is cheap in both quality AND cost.
Health care funded with taxes is not "cheap". It's just a socialistic way to fund something. It allows poor people to have more equal rights. However there can be huge problems with taxes, how all that money is distributed etc. European Union changed things from bad to worse, because it's corrupted and money is spent in crazy ways that can't go on forever. EU will fall if corruption can't be solved, it's just the matter of time.

I apologize Jo. I hope things get better for you.

Edited out my post so as not to feed an obvious asshole troll.
-
Who was the troll.
-
I was for having a dissenting opinion.
-
You were a troll for soap boxing. Your opinion is hardly dissenting as it was not made in opposition to anything. I don't necessarily disagree with your opinion either, but it was poorly made and poorly placed. That's all. So I overreacted and wrote a big ol' nasty reply, which I deleted, but for some reason still felt it necessary to call you an asshole.
That's my bad. I get carried away.
EDIT: As for my health, it continues to be solid
