Title: Real-Time Tile-Based Games
Post by: Fenrir on November 13, 2011, 04:44:23 AM
Do you have any strong opinions about games that are both real-time and tile-based? The only examples I can give are The Doryen Arena and ToMENET, as I have not played any other games designed like that. How do you feel about this unusual combination of flowing time and rigid space?

There was one game that made it possible: Dungeon Master. Other games have failed this far.

I may be way off but what about the original Zelda? And you are probably talking about dungeon hacker type games, but Sim City is tile based and real time.
Some of the NES Ultima games were real time and tile based. The original RPG's on the NES as well. Like Final Fantasy and all of the Dragon Warriors.
As far as Real Time Tile Based Roguelikes I think there is a Sci Fi one out there. I can't think of it right now. Something 2000. 3000 AD? I have not found one I like so far.
