All right, so I have been playing this Roguelike constantly for years. It will be twenty-one years in July. I have two questions:
1. Has anyone been able to contact the Lead Developer? Some people claim to have some old chat logs from back in alpha, and those people certainly keep collecting donations for him, but no one seem to agree on precisely which chat logs are his, and I certainly have not been able to reach him.
2. Does anyone know what happened to that community fork that supposedly happened in early dev? I have tried getting in touch with some of the old accounts of the guy who forked it--Satan, Lucifer, Beezlebub, and the Devil--but I got nothing. I even pinged his IP, 6.6.6, but that did not work. Do you think that the Lead Developer made him shut down his servers?
I am no good at this game, but it seems pretty solid and popular for a freeware indie title, so it is a shame that there is such a grave lack of support. I would also like to see it go open source, but that certainly won't happen if we can not get in touch with someone that has the source code--either the Lead Dev or the project leader for the community fork.

Good luck with that :D
As always,
Minotauros

I hear some guys at the LHC are trying to code-dive the source, but I fear we're a long way off developing mods.

Wow. It is so freaky that I saw this thread tonite (of all nites). I've been away and busy so yeah I can say it's freaky. After all, I am almost about to release my rl and I already hate the NPCs in that game....
Regarding #1: you are talking about alpha chat logs? You are trying to contact lead developer?
I think he hates you (us) and that the alpha chat logs are dust -- just speculation on what would've been had there been actual alpha chat logs. It appears they are trying to build a scene, rather than concentrating on what is.
And, regarding yr third paragraph it is odd that you did not number it. Perhaps 6? Regarding lack of support: it does not bode well for the project; however, I am certain that there are many isolated groups drying to disassemble the code. Due to their reclusive natures there probably is little effort to consolidate any useful code. It is popular almost because you are forced to play it. There is some addiction involved, I think.
And yes, I have not beaten it, but sometimes to win is to lose. That last part is speculation though.
ps. Darren, yes develop mods. For god's sake develop modz!!!11!! I would play 'em.

where can i download this mysterious rogue "Reality"?
-
You should have come with it pre-installed.
-
what race/background did you choose?
-
I think permadeath suits it perfectly

There are rumors there might be a new version out in 2012. They say it won't be save compatible, though.
-
Somebody in touch with the Lead Dev came to my door once. He was a nice young man. Wore a bike helmet.
-
Well I have to say it's pretty buggy in terms of balance... ::) Some of the races and classes are virtually unplayable, and it's damn easy to get pwned even in the higher levels.
-
Game not fun, too highly dependent on the RNG. Number of coins your character starts with can be wildly variable. And requiring random assignment of race/class is simply brutal. Some race/class picks cannot even use health potions or get access to skill trainers. WTF?
This RL crashed my system recently, need to reformat my system but have so far been unsuccessful.
