High potential.

I played the leaked beta and I thought it was terrible. Sorry.
-
Clonk (http://www.clonk.de) already did this, and it seems like Clonk did it better.

I believe you have to be a special kind of player to play these games. I would call them "crafters".

Well, terraria, and minecraft do have some interesting lessons if you want to popularize your roguelike. Multiplayer creativity is big apparently. Even if the creative actions you can perform are only relatively minor.

Tried it a week ago and been playing since.
Very nice game that in my opinion beats Minecraft in the genre.
It's not a roguelike but try it out before judging it. It's amazing.

I've heard really mixed reviews about this game. A lot of people think it's great and a lot of people think it's terrible. Too bad there isn't a demo.
-
I'm not amonge the ones who love it.. as I'm not into those minecraftlike.. but I see potential; I think that with a complex roguelike structure a 2d platform arcade game like this would be awesome.
-
I purchased it some weeks ago and I'm having fun playing it.
-
I played it a long time ago, around version 1.6 or so, and it was pretty fun. Beware, the multiplayer servers are self-serviced, so you have a pretty good chance of meeting a very rude player. Unfortunately they don't have as friendly a player base we do :P

I'm sure you could google around and find a demo somewhere

Hah, we have plenty of rude people in the RL community (look at some of the comments on the latest rl of the year vote for an example), luckily they don't often appear in the rogue temple forum :)
They normally don't even realize they're being rude, thinking they are "just calling it as it is" or "asking hard questions".

The game looked interesting and I tried it out. Unfortunately, I just couldn't get into it.
I do like Minecraft a bit, but it only sees play about once a month. I'm not really into building big extravagant structures in it. I just kinda explore and try not to die. I bought it about a year ago and still haven't made a proper house and have still exploring the first and only world I generated.
Terraria definitely has more action than Minecraft, but I think I like minecraft better just cause it's more laid back. Good for just milling time and doing some mindless digging and exploring.

This website puts Terraria among the 2011 gest indie games.

Terraria has little to do with Minecraft IMO. It's not important to build nice appealing stuff, just the various workplaces (forge, anvil, alchemist station, etc) and a room for each (unique) NPC.

Many of the bad reviews I saw on youtube referred to very bad older releases of the game.

I wonder if you've been to many communities yet. Compared to "normal humans", the roguelike community is like a bunch of angels. You even get constructive criticism rather than "this is shit".

Looking at Steam statistics.
Terraria: 64 hours played. OMG.
And yesterday I finally defeated 1st hardmode boss :-/

Not a bad performance. How did you defeated him? I guess you're talking about the devourer of worlds (improved version).

Nope. Twins. I crafted adomantium gear set and adomantium repeater.
Used Gravity potions, Archery potions and Regeneration potions.
And a lot of Holy arrows (around 1250).
That was EPIC. Afterwards I could find arrows many screens away from battle place.

Haha, nice.
How do you deal with the lighting problem?
The best solution looks like to be the fairy bell.. not perfect but still better than those mining hat (preventing to use armor helmets), orb of light (almost useless), torches and so on.

Ah! There was another potion. Hunter's potion or something like this. It lights up enemies. So, I didn't use any additional light sources.
Also, almost constant rain of stars lights everything around a little.
I dug vertical tunnel without obstacles from surface right to underworld. Fall time is 33 seconds! In a small world!
If you drop something there, you will find it at the bottom. So, Terraria actually tracks things like this.
Btw, you know that it is impossible to flood the underworld? The water is evaporating mid air.

According to Steam, I've played for 165 hours. Since I paid $2.50, that makes this the best value for the money of any non-freeware game I've ever played. I think.
