Title: are people reluctant to post here instead of usenet?
Post by: Reverend Prohna on May 14, 2007, 10:20:23 PM
I never really got into usenet. but this here seems so much more fresh. like just the thing to get the community excited. so what gives?
I guess the sites still new. either way good job roguetemple.

There's probably some reluctancy, but I hope more people will eventually notice and use this media :)

We need yours and everybody help to make people notice this :)

It takes time to build up a site.  Attention breeds attention.  Keep posting here and more people will show up.

Personally, I like forums a lot more than usenet... so I'd be happy if the majority of the attention moved away from RGRD.

I think you need several more boards. The current ones don't cover everything. I see the need for:

* Other roguelikes. Not all roguelikes are major or newborn. BTW Do you mean "newborn", or just "new"? For example, I would count DoomRL as "new" (since it is new compared to the major ones) but not as "newborn" (since it is here for some time already). Also I don't know why the GenRoguelikes thread has been put in major roguelikes, it has nothing to do with ADOM, Nethack, Crawl, or Moria variants.

* Roguelike development. For those who do not want to use usenet for some reason. Although the developers probably know how to use usenet (we will see as the site progresses), I think there might be people with ideas usable in roguelikes to share who do not. I think this section should be inviting for players too. Something like "For those who need help in writing a roguelike, and those who have ideas that could be implemented." I understand "Newborn roguelikes" to be related to specific games, while this would be not.

* All roguelikes. For topics which are not linked to any specific roguelike, and are not linked to development either. I understand "General Discussion" to be about things not related to roguelikes themselves.

I agree, I think the forums are much nicer to use than usenet stuff.

Thanks Z, as you all may have noticed, I made some changes to the board distribution. Hopefully you won't mind myself moving your topics all around this time, I will try that not to happen again.

This is the new distribution:

General Category
 The Roguelike World
Anything you have to say related to roguelikes that doesnt fit anywhere else
 General Discussion
Feel free to talk about anything and everything in this board.
 Temple of the Roguelike
Anything about the website goes here
Roguelike Games
 Major
Discuss about the big ones. NetHack, Angband, ADoM, Crawl
 Running Roguelikes
Discuss about the new kids in the block
 In-Dev Roguelikes
Interesting projects lacking a bit of polish and content.
Roguelike Development
 Announcements
Got a new release to announce?
 Development
Share your ideas and troubles with the roguedevs community

I completely agree with all the above posters. I hope more people start showing up here.

Particularly, speaking from player to dev of roguelike games should be easier here in forums than it is in Usenet, in my opinion. That way players might be able to give more feedback.

If there will be news - posts will follow.
God, i hope this place wont turn into yet another Crawlers den...

doh duplicate topic :o by me. my bad.

As long as important threads continue to be created on usenet, people wont post here. the only pro of usenet is historic archiving. if this site goes away, so too does the messages.

I hope we can share some of the conversation traffic with usenet.

I will do my best to keep this website going through the years, and I hope we wont let it die. I am planning to make regular weekly backups, so our info isn't endangered.

@Karry: I hope all crawlers (and *banders, nethackers and adomers) get into this website! the more traffic we have, the more likely it will be for new roguelikes to be noticed. If needed, there will be single Crawl board so the rest of games' discussion is not choked, but only time will tell is this is needed.

People are not moving from Usenet because it's PITA to remember passwords for thousands of forums, when all discussion about everything can be had in one centralised place with one login and pass. It is also pain to mantain avatars and signatures and stuff, so as not to look very bland. I have a lot of accounts on different forums, but hardly ever post, because it just takes too much time to follow all responses to my posts in different forums/subforums.

I hope you do. I would be very disappointed if this site just disappears after a few months like so many others. You are still in college right? I ask, because "the first real job" is usually the moment when people abandon their old hobbies because of a lack of time. This still worries me.

Worry not ;)

I wish I was still in college, but no...

I have been working for 4 years now in "real jobs" (software development related), and I have managed to keep my hobbies into my life, so they will probably stick there forever.

I will probably start as a class college teacher next month, roguelikes will be there :)

Is this message board slow for anybody else?  The rest of the site runs fine, but over the last couple of days this forum has become unusable for me.  It takes over a minute just to open a category or post.

Well, I clicked the reply button to say no, it's a bit slower than earlier but not a minute, but then it took over a minute to load this, so yes :(

edit: Though it did post my reply in less than a second and take me back to the main category page just as fast...

It's weird. I have no speed problem, I think... Maybe the server just overloads temporarily sometimes or something.

It seems to be working fine today.  Nice and fast again.  Very weird.

Maybe it was a temporary overload on the server... but my experience with this hosting company (for two years now, business projects) has been very possitive. ;)
