I suppose it was more a MUD than a roguelike. www.phantasia4.com - it was just a multipalyer grid, with simple rules of gameplay but it was really really entertaining and addictive anyway. When you died, you died. You could interact with other players, by killing them or becoming a "champion" of the realm, then gaining access to certain powers that et you find coordinates of other players, incase you felt like hunting them down etc.
Anyway, the game has been down for about 2 years or so. I've tried to track down the creator, but no luck.
Does anyone remember this game or have any idea who the creator is/know how to reach him? :)

I too was recently bummed to see that neither pultimate.com nor phantasia4.com exist anymore. As far I know Phantasia was a game originally written in the 80s, maybe a bit earlier that later was converted to a mud as the internet grew, it then had a couple pretty decent javascript clients written for it. Phatasia Ultimate was an expanded version of phantasia 4 with more classes and some other stuff.
I found a site that purports to have the source both for the mud server as well as two of the javascript clients. I don't have the time right now to try and get it up on some free hosting, but I'l put the link here in case anyone else has the time and interest.

Now that I think about it some more, I've been looking for a good project to learn android with. Maybe I'll give porting one of the javascript clients a try or write my own. I'll have to look at the license.

If you want to get this game going again shoot me an email, i would love to help out. I was a devoted player for some time and i really think this game would be a hit if we got it out there in to the MUDloving, Browser-hugging community.

The clients were made in Java, not Javascript -- sorry, ocd setting in ;D
A few friends and I are actually in the process of getting another server online. Problem is the code they originally released was way different than the game that was up and running before p4 got shut down. I'm also trying to get a client implemented into Facebook(done in PHP/javascript with MYSQL database as opposed to current filebased system), as I would really like this game to get big again like it was in the glory days.
Anyways, stumbled across this thread while seeing if p4 came back online(I check every so often with hopes that it will so that I can get in contact with one of the developers). Please check out the game when we get it released in the next few months! We are planning to keep the original gameplay/storyline/mechanics but might add in some twists to keep things interesting.

The domain holder of Phantasia4.com said to me:
The phantasia4.com domain is being reserved on the off chance that Saffara and Void ever finish their tinkering with it and get it back on air.
But I am trying to get a copy up and running. I'm having issues though. I'm getting socket timeout issues which I never got years ago when I had run the sourcecode.
I am trying to gather old players. I created this page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Phantasia-4/167915936569588

Actually.....my phantasia game has started in 2002, and I recently brought it back to life.....http://www.riseofwarriors.com and I even have a test version online at http://www.phantasiarow.com, On the main version I have added a Wand, More monsters, Light and Dark Alignments a ton of new classes(which need rebalanced), A new achievable rank called oracle and a ton of other changes. On my Test version I have added an Evolutionary realm which is still buggy but I am fixing it. New thing I am adding also is multi-kings, for the different races.
Domains for the main game:
riseofwarriors.com
phantasia4.net
pultimate.net
Domains for the test game
phantasiarow.com
phantasiarow.net

Awesome that I found so many that remember and know about P4! And amazed after I posted that it actually came online again!
I have to say, it's really interesting to hear people talking about "porting" it to Android. Android has a great marketshare now, and the platform seems strong. Yet, it's suprisingly few RPGs for it yet.

if any of the devs read this:
can you provide a downloadable java version? this webstart stuff isn't working for me, doesn't throw errors. the page is just blank and nothing happens :|
