Barony - 3d roguelike game
« on: December 19, 2016, 09:01:26 PM »
I've just started to play Barony; its my 1st time when I tried this game, first impressions:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXI5QuMpxxM

Very unusual real-time 3d roguelike game with a lot of stuff from Nethack... Very hardcore game :)

1) The only problem is very small font. I would be so glad to understand how to increase it... Anyone knows? %)
2) Is it possible to skip 1st lvl? This hall without anything interesting :) I die a lot so wanna be immideatelly in action with my new character

Also I've made second stream in Russian... Even more YASD %))

Looks interesting. Any analogies / differences with Delver?
What I enjoy the most in roguelikes: Anti-Farming and Mac Givering my way out. Kind of what I also enjoy in real life.

The *core* of these games is really similar, but Barony plays different than Delver - it's rather slow paced, features more complete mechanics (including character development similar to Elder Scrolls series), also I think that gameplay is more rewarding. Barony is also more polished (especially in terms of balance) than Delver, but unfortunately it also has own quirks - like strange mouse control (you can move only horizontally, it feels weird for me) and other details.

Interesting.. shame about two things: the 'cute' graphics and this 'horizontal-world' limitation, I was exactly wondering how could it would have been if you had the ability to also look up/down and eventually fly. But doing a modern Ultima Underwolrd is a great idea.

OK, horizontal limit of mouse movement is not the feature of Barony anymore :D Just tested on 2.04 release. Earlier, I was playing quite old 2.02 release.

Thanks goodness - but can you jump, or fly up/down a la Might & Magic? I totally love complex rpgs full of secrets where you can also fly and discover further secret treasure rooms, shortcuts, etc.. going through otherwise unsurpassable torrents of lava, exploring deep underground areas, etc.

Unfortunately, levels are still rather flat, and I don't think it's gonna change - base of engine doesn't allow it. Every dungeon level features only three layers - floor, wall, ceiling. At least I think so, because it's how map editor works.
