Rogue with Purple Heart (7DRL 2016 Finished)

Hi guys.

I hope that my roguelike have *right* scope this year - my last project starts with too ambitious assumptions so... This was problematic.

History? Vietnam War. Your team was ambushed by Vietcong and you are only survivor. Because you are wounded, you need to reach Medevac as soon as possible.

This year my entry would be simple game. Quite traditional roguelike with some 'platformer elements' in game... hm... *spirit*, not gameplay or mechanics. I would like to make memorable game - caused by theme of game and developing relationship between player and @.

Code will be based on my good-old-still-in-development HumFallRL (I want to clear the code and make sort of framework... some day). And - as I have very small amount of time today - this is my only thing to do for first day of 7DRL 2016. Adapt old code to new things.

Btw, what do you guys think, what name is better: Rogue with Purple Heart or just Purple Heart? I know that 'Rogue' in roguelike title is very... 'generic' and I think that 'Purple Heart' *sounds* better, but what about other factors? Google-abling, memorizing, etc?

I have some concerns... In my country is 11PM now... I don't know if I can post this as 'success'. I announced starting 5 V, but I started 6 V. Anyway - here is this. Rogue with Purple Heart, 7DRL2016 build.

I didn't include every feature what I want to include, but RPH is quite complete. For example, I wanted to make looting corpses mechanics (for VietCong related weapons and ammo). In the next release, I promise. I hope that post-campo build would be better balanced than first version.

Wouldn`t worry too much about SEO. If somebody gonna look for it, they will probably put in "7drl" or "roguelike" anyway.

It's about US military decoration, not about heart as organ - it's for clarification. I'm not worrying about naming, I just was inspired by recent /r/roguelikedev discussion about 'proper' naming schemes.

I started today. Yesterday I still had guests in my house - few good, old friends from the far lands ;) So I have less time to finish my roguelike. Anyway - I finished adapting my code for new purposes already, I can work on 'body' of game now.

Purple Heart is also the main character in the game/manga/anime series "Hyperdimension Neptunia". Darren did mention in the 7drl podcast that there weren't enough roguelikes about magical girls... so... maybe?

Maybe... Some day... Entry for 7DRL 2017... ;) But definitely not today - I would stick to my idea, I like it and it's already designed.

Ok, I finished first stricte-gameplay-oriented things which are... *visible* for player. So, I made scripts for slightly random generation of the starting place (screenshot below) and the glade with medevac (I would not show this - how could I spoil it?!)



Also dungeon / level generation is almost done, but I have to fix some related problems first...

I had no time to post images of levels etc., but I want to make it later today or tomorrow eventually.

Most work today was about polishing shooting / combat system... So I think I will finish my roguelike in proper '7 day' deadline.

@akeley - Implementing weapons now. I hope that you will not be disappointed due to some historical inaccuracy... I try to avoid mistakes, but... things can happen.

Hi guys, can someone tell me *how I should count the days* in 7DRLC? There is 7DRL, so... so 7 days, yeah. Contest starts 5 march. 5+7 = 12. So I have time to Saturday? Or I have time to Friday, because 5 March was the first day, so day 7 is Friday? I suppose that the second option is true but I admin, one more day would be ideal ;)

The way I understand it you have 7x24 hours, so if you started at noon on the 5th, you have until noon on the 12th.

So, Rogue with Purple Heart is almost done. I should improve level generation (there is one, 'all-time-straight' path from left side of the map to the right side of the map; I tried to make level 100% passable by drunkard's walk, but it works weird; some new tries will be tested tomorrow), there are some issue about last level and I would like to make simple 'perk' system, but that's all and it should be done tomorrow (or even today). One thing which affraids me it's lack of playtesting -> lack of balance. This is reason why I ask for 'date compartment' clarification - one day more would be ideal, it would be day only for polishing. Ouh, probably I will do special 'post campo' release.

Interesting things which are implemented already:
- simple 'speed system'
- simple-but-significant differences between player's classes (infrantryman/rifleman, scout marksman, reconnesaince man, machine gunner, sniper)
- balance and historical related differences between player (US Soldier) and enemies (Vietcong partizans), so player has better weapons, but enemies are just *better* in jungle fights

There are few design choices which I'm not sure. In most cases it's about 'relistic' / 'immersive' choice. For example, word 'sniper' is associated (as 'reminds') with long range units, which are very dangerous. Machine guns usually link with weapons which are very dangerous due to 'high dps' / 'high damage-for-bullet' rate, but not necessarily as long range units. So, I think that more immersive gameplay is if sniper has longer effective range than machine gunner.
But, for example, as a matter of fact, M60 machine gun have (it depends, but let us assume that *a lot*) longer effective range than M40 sniper rifle.
Another choice is about M1 Garand reloading.
